Good faith, but de facto is tantamount to vandalism[edit]

TO: Editors interested in documenting performing arts, ethnomusicology, etc. RE: Banal deletion of links for the sole rationale that they link to videographic or audio files.

Apparently some editors are laboring under the mistaken notion that it is their perogative to summarily delete links to videographic documentation in any and all cases. This practice is based upon a simplistic application of guidelines which are not applicable in many instances. Please consider placing the below notice on Discussion pages of Performin Arts articles.

ATTENTION There is NO BAN on video links at Wikipedia This is a performing arts article There is a special purpose to videographic documentation on this topic area Multiple performing arts articles use video links in a thoughtful manner, this one included Do not delete video links without a specific rationale Please discuss generic reservations to this type of link on the talk page You may also search for pertinent discussions of the topic

It is your obligation to familiarize yourself with policies BEFORE making edits Policies developed to proscribe reliance upon categorical statements on video do not apply to other cases

In many cases, videographic documentation has expert testimony or contains pictures. Pictures are not banned at Wiki Media nor are videos.

Post be kind enough to post any deleted information into the Talk Page and explain your reasoning Multiple performing arts articles use video links in a thoughtful manner, this one included- Summary deletion of useful and appropriate video links without sustaining rationale may constitute VANDALISM and may subject deleting editors to sanctions- Sanctions may include (a) A topic ban (b) A WMF-wide ban (c) an IP ban (d) disqualification from administrator candidacy To discuss or dispute this edit note open a thread on the Discussion page of this article Experienced or otherwise thoughtful editors are invited to help improve this edit notice -and help to clarify policies and guidelines.

End of Vgd Plaintext Notice version 2.0
Before removing the Youtube links, I asked several people who indicated that although using Youtube links is not expressly forbidden, it could cause problems if the material contained in the video is copyrighted (which it doesn't seem to be with this type of music) or if it is not an official channel of the artist (i.e. fan video) which at least one on this page appears to be. I just wanted to make sure you knew my reasoning behind removing them. Cheers!Topher385 (talk) 19:17, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First Corollary to VgD Notice version 2.0[edit]

Please do not remove cited, factual and plausible languaged & links on the sole basis that you don't like the host they link to without replacing it in external links and so referencing in mainspace Hosts which are blacklisted on WMF projects are at the discretion of bureacrats, administrators and the Board of Directors. Hosts which are NOT blacklisted are not subject to blacklist by individual editors. If you are feeling grumpy about such content, you are entitled to add citation needed template if you so desire---> Wikipedia guidelines discourage use of amatuer videos to support abstract generalizations only if the content features questionable unreliable information In other cases videos contain expert testimony, OR the video has liner notes or comments which quote expert opinion, OR it is a case of res loquitor. Pictures are res loquitor. They are not proscribed, nor are audio or video documentation Do NOT remove links solely because they are to sudio or video.

Exception to VgD 2.0 and Corollary[edit]

Editors who worry about these matters may wish to request that links to videographic documentation

  • are relevant to the assertion
  • that the relevance be prima facie obvious OR otherwise that the relevance of the reference be stated in the reference
  • support the veracity of the encyclopedic assertion in the mainspace article text
  • that the link not be a bare url but preferably contain a consistently formatted citation indicating the source, title, author, publisher, videographer, date of the videographic recording, date uploaded and ideally a Wikipedia editor's encapsulation or comment based upon the reliable source
  • that preference be given to such links which have secondary source information such as (a) on camera commentary by identified narrators who are expert in their field or (2) on camera statement by others, such as performers, which by their nature are secondary source EVEN IF those persons may be of interest to secondary source researchers as primary source. For instance, if an old time banjo player, who might be the object of intense interest to ethnomucicologists, were to state on-camera "most banjo players who make their own banjos prefer to use wood from the Banjo tree" that is a secondary. If he displays his banjo and states "this here is a banjo neck made from the wood of a twenty five year old Ficus Banjoicus tree from Banjo County, Banjo Province, Canada", that video is valid if it is linked as a reference to an encyclopedic summary statement such as "Banjo makers in Banjo County have made banjo necks from the wood of Banjo Trees (Ficus banjoicus)".

Useful template for this type of issue[edit]

Although it is not censorship based upon the more usual reasons, it is censorship based upon slavish adherence to a misconception of WP guidelines. Thus, this template message is not entirely off the mark:
