Titles in English[edit]

More accurate English translations for the titles of these songs would be an improvement. The English versions of the titles currently listed are from a Universal Edition score (linked in the article) which offers English language translations whose syllables sync with the music as an alternative for those not wishing to sing them in the original German. They are neither the most accurate nor the most common translations of the titles, as discussed in the following article: https://www.theguardian.com/music/tomserviceblog/2009/aug/21/mahler-lucerne. I did not find a copyright-free alternative translation in a quick search, or I would have made the edit myself, but I trust that someone can make this change. --PStub (talk) 23:41, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You can make footnotes, but we usually list common printed translations if they exist. You can add a sentence about the proble in the article, with the Guardian ref. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:07, 25 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite and Expansion[edit]

This article is in desparate need of expanding, since at the moment there is nothing more than the song titles, instrumentation, and some (generally uncited) information about the publication of the collection. In particular, I will be adding information on a) the writing, premiere, and reception of these songs in Mahler's lifetime, and b) a section overviewing the songs in the context of Mahler's evolving musical style and his literary influences. Source-wise, I will be mainly relying on Henry Louis de la Grange's expansive biography of Mahler, as well as Donald Mitchell's commentary on the subject. Later I will write sections on each of the songs in more detail, using information from la Grange, Mitchell, and an article on the collection written by Stephen Hefling found in the Mahler Companion (currently I do not have this on hand).
