College hopping rewrite[edit]

The college hopping section needs to be removed/rewritten. Although slightly edited it still significantly resembles the article here. A better title for the section should be considered as well; "early influences", "educational background", "early career", etc. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Waarmstr (talkcontribs) 13:57, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Move to Delete[edit]

No offense but this extremely unfair to all artists who have actually charted yet cannot meet wikipedia standards for inclusion. Rich kids who have parents paying for their careers needs to wait until they have acheived public noterity before their college years are being talked of. This is a joke and should deleted. Move to Keep
Rachael Yamagata is signed to one of the Big 4 record labels (BMG), she has had songs featured on major film soundtracks and has sung on some very well known artists records. To say that she is product of rich parents is jumping to conclusions, nowhere does it say that her parents landed her a record deal... And yes I happen to be a fan, and she is one of the better songwriters around, maybe you haven't heard of her, but you probably aren't looking past MTV for new music now are you?... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.209.142.48 (talkcontribs) 05:41, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

My knowledge of music extends beyond limp sounding generic waifs/ Tori Amos clones such as this, does your's? No one knows who this is and her article is far too long. Frankchu3 (talkcontribs) 2:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Move to Keep
If by "no one" you mean the likes of Billboard Magazine[1] and the singer/actress Mandy Moore, who's collaborated with Ms. Yamagata, then yes, no one knows who she is. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Elephino-rob (talkcontribs) 20:41, 1 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]
  • I haven't heard of this singer, but from the current state of the article it appears that it complies with the applicable content policies. If someone wants to nominate it for an AfD, fine, but until then there's no need to "move to delete" or "move to keep". Accordingly, I've removed the notability template from the article. Franchu3, just because you haven't heard of her doesn't mean nobody has. I've never heard a Lady Gaga song, but does that mean she doesn't belong on here? The world is full of amazing musicians lots of people have never heard of, open your mind. Dan33185

writing style[edit]

I tried to cleanup some of the excessively informal tone of the article, but the Happenstance paragraph proved to be a bit hairy. Quite a few of subjective, unattributed claims, such as the Yamagata's music to Fiona Apple and Sarah McLachlan, and whether the guitars in "1963" recall the Jackson Five. The description of Klezmatics as the premiere Klezmer group in the country, seems to be unnecessary peacock-terming. Even if they're popular, uncontroversial assessments, they don't really keep with the formal tone of an encyclopedia, and should be properly attributed or removed. Japanese American[edit]

The description "Japanese American" was placed in the lead with a citation but I have removed the word Japanese. Because a) she was born in the USA[2] b) we don't describe people in terms of their past heritage ie we don't say Denzel Washington is an African American actor. and c) even if we did, her mother was German-Italian and her father was also American born with "Japanese decent".
