Some confusing passages[edit]

In streetnames, we seem to be mixing (for example) "Calea", "Street" and even (before I changed it) "Rue" (similarly for other designations). We should either use "Street" consistently, or use "Calea" and put "Street" parenthetically on first use. - Jmabel May 18, 2006

What is meant by "in zones scaled from 1 to 4 (1 being the highest, 4 the lowest)?" Makes no sense to me in its context. - Jmabel May 18, 2006

I guess it is a copy-paste leftover from the Ferentari article: "It has been assigned the lowest quota on local taxes (it is zoned as 4 on a scale of 1 to 4, with 4 being the lowest), equal only to the farmlands surrounding the city source: Local Tax Direction of The 5th District." Mentatus 21:54, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why is that remark about Calea Rahovei being also known as The Florists' Street included in the paragraph on urban decline? I would think that the florist would have mitigated decline rather than contribute to it. - Jmabel May 18, 2006

"The Old Industrial Area of Trafic Greu": is the neighborhood actually called "Trafic Greu"? Or does this just mean to say "The Old Industrial Area of Heavy Traffic"? - Jmabel May 18, 2006

Yes, in Bucharest there's a boulevard called (informally) "Trafic Greu" - the Progresului Road. Maybe because the heavy traffic was (is still?) permitted on that boulevard. Mentatus 21:54, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, on the two points where I've gotten responses I'll edit accordingly. Thanks, Mentatus. - Jmabel | Talk 21:59, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

urban decline[edit]

From the 1950s onwards, Rahova entered a period of long urban decline

Rahova was always a poor neighbourhood: even in the 18th century, "Calea Rahovei" used to be called "Podul Calicilor", "Road of the Poor", which doesn't strike me as a name of a posh neighbourhood.

Reminds me of Marvin the Paranoid Android:

"The first ten million years were the worst. And the second ten million years, they were the worst too. The third ten million years I didn't enjoy at all. After that I went into sort of a decline"

Looks like it came in with this series of anonymous edits last year. Sounds like you have something citable to the contrary, I say go for it. - Jmabel | Talk 00:08, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sister cities[edit]

I notice the removal of the following:

Sister cities

Rahova is sistered to Breezemount, Northern Ireland.

The edit summary (which was about Rahova not being an administrative district) did not seem relevant to the removal. Was the removal accidental, or was this wrong? Breezemount is a stub, so there is nothing to learn there. - Jmabel | Talk 19:58, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It just seems blatantly false to me. I can't see how a neighbourhood without its own administration would get a sister city. Since it's unsourced and seems unlikely to me, I removed it. (googling them yields exactly zero hits) bogdan 20:28, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense; probably should have been mentioned in the summary.

FWIW, there are entities without formal legal existence that have entered into this sort of "sistering" arrangement: see, for example [1]; Whidbey Island, about 50 km from where I am right now, is not a legal entity. - Jmabel | Talk 03:55, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
