Future traveltimes and average speeds[edit]

One can only assume the travel times are based solely on current time tables, but where the future travel times are based on and what year is the future? Is it the near future and are they planned or proposed values? Years and references please.

Also, would be nice if after referencing the above, someone could calculate the ultimate average of all rail lines mentioned (however, should leave the 2 russian connections out from the final calculation, because they're not finnish rail transportation values thus irrelevant).

It's from a table in Finnish Rail Administration (RHK) report Rataverkko 2020 (Rail Network 2020) from 2002. It's available in pdf from RHK home pages, unfortunately only in Finnish by quick checking: http://www.rhk.fi/tietopalvelu/esitteet/rataverkko_2020/

Finland Railways track route distance[edit]

A post on the SAR-L Yahoogroup, message no. 46715 of 23 January 2014 by Rollo Dickson, editor of Railways Africa, is repeated below.^[1]

Message for Andre (in his Wikipedia-expert capacity):

On the Wikipedia page for Finland Railways, the figure for track route distance is given as 5,919 km in the opening paragraph. In the table alongside however the total is given as "8,816 km (5,478 miles)".

Jane's World Railways 2007-2008 says 5,905 km.

Jackson's Railway Dictionary ((UK publisher J H Haynes, 4th edition 2006) says 5,850 km.

Seems like the Wikipedia table compiler took the actual figure for kms, thought they were miles, and converted to a completely incorrect 8,816 km.

The slight differences (between the references) for total route length are no doubt accounted for by new construction over the years.

Could you correct the Wikipedia table for total route length to 5,919 km, to correspond with their para 1, which is probably pretty close to the correct current total? (The figure 5,478 which the Wiki table gives for miles will also need adjusting downwards.)

PS Wiki gives 3,172 km for electrified lines. Jane's says 3,047, so this seems about right.^[2]

Since I'm no expert on Finland's railways, I'm posting Rollo's message here for one of the contributors to this article to deal with.
