Discography[edit]

The Discography is a Table containing the list of songs sung by the Singer. This is a Data which is provided for anyone and everyone to see the list of all songs sung by the Musician in various movies. This Data is available for every Singer and Hence the Table is added . Thanks. So I can add some more data into the TABLE and be confident that it wont get deleted... ?.. Please reassure me, so that my efforts wont go in vain. There are so many songs of the Singer that needs to be added. So, this is Part of Wikipedia and hence there wont be any edit error in this... Pls confirm me so that I can proceed with the same. There are a lot of Indian Singers who have their Discography Table. Please check them.. For eg. Naresh Iyer, A.R.Rahman. Please check their wikipedia pages. Everyone has their Discgraphy Table. @Collect, I am somewhat baffled by your objection to a full discography. Is there something in policy or guidelines which prevent this? Do you have any examples of famous singers where the article has deliberately limited the discography? WP:MUSIC certainly seems to support the idea of discographies and does not impose any kind of limitation other than notability of the artist. SpinningSpark 15:02, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing out problems in other articles. For Iyer, I've tagged the section as needing sources. If they aren't forthcoming, I'll remove entries that are not supported by articles. For Rahman, he has a separate article, and all the entries have blue links, which, although not perfect, is good enough. Harini is hard because it's not a discography but a filmography with songs in the films. The films have blue links, but one would have to check each film article to see if Harini's involvement is sourced. One of the problems in not sourcing in the article itself but relying on another Wikipedia article. I've tagged the section as needing sources. Balasubrahmanyam is not a singer but a composer, among other things. The stuff about his compositions is not sourced, and I've tagged it.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:43, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, enough of this edit warring in the article. From now on I will consider blocking anyone who edits the discography section (either adding or removing) without first establishing consensus on this page. Consensus means agreement, not just stating on the page that you are going to do it. Exceptions only for cases that require immediate removal under policy such as WP:BLP. Note that WP:COPYVIO does not always require immediate removal - please follow the guidance given on the policy page. SpinningSpark 16:25, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If that's the way you prefer to handle the problems created by Vithurgod, then I'm bowing out. Even though it's a lot of work, I have been remarkably patient and civil with him as I think he sincerely wants to improve the article, but if I have to obtain a consensus to remove each new source he comes up with in support of adding songs to the discography, that pushes me across the line. You may be right as a matter of pure technical policy, but practically speaking it's too much time taken away from other things. Perhaps others will be willing to spend the time. As an aside, as Collect pointed out at the top, it's not even clear she should have a discography, although the standards on that sort of thing are pretty mushy.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:45, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The best kinds of sources would be those that discuss a song or songs rather than just a list of them. For example, a review of the song, or the film in which the song is, or the album, whatever. In that way, not only will you be able to list the song, but the source also makes the song more noteworthy. Always keeping in mind that the source has to be reliable - meaning, as illustrations, it can't be a personal website or a blog. As for not having a discography at all, some editors believe that lists of any kind are inherently problematic as there's nothing to indicate why every thing the singer (or author or whatever) did was important enough to include in their article. As an extreme example, let's say a singer recorded 3,000 songs, would we really want a list of 3,000 entries? Thus, keeping the works of the subject in the prose part of the article provides context and depth as to the the singer's works. Finally, you should avoid websites that exist to share songs or share lyrics as most of them will have copyright issues.--Bbb23 (talk) 04:12, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether any of these are reliable sources, but only the second link has probable copyright issues. So, from my point of view, you can add those songs that are supported by the other links. @Bbb23 . The Second Site is also a Reliable Source. Its a Site which has all music reviews. Thanks for allowing this. Vithurgod, there are so many things wrong with what you've done to the article in this edit, it's hard to know where to start. In no particular order, first, you waited only a few hours for others to contribute to this discussion, hardly a sign of someone who is interested in consensus. Second, your statement about the second link has no basis. That website permits users to listen to the songs listed on it. Clicking on the song links goes to another site (which I can't access at the moment because of "internal server errors"), but my assumption is there is no permission from the song's copyright owners for users to listen to these songs, which would be a copyright violation. Third, the websites appear to have support for her involvement in maybe one song each (one website isn't clear to me), yet you've added a long list of songs that are unsupported. I wouldn't call it an "edit war". That said, I'll wait until Vithurgod can format the table properly so it's readable. I'm sincerely trying to be helpful here, but this back-and-forth without any real progress is tiring. Also, the above "table", which I can see better in this edit box, has no sources in it. I noticed the added refs. It will take me some time to go through them, so please be patient. But just a couple of preliminary observations (based on the first two entries on the table). Can you find a reliable source to add to the article that she's also known as Ranina Sagar and Ranina Reddy Sagar? Otherwise, we can't use sources that use those names. Also, the source has to support all the information in the table entry, not just the song itself. Finally, the fact that I can play the song on the second reference (cinegoer) presents copyright issues.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:54, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bbb23... I would be patient. Pls go through them. Her name is Ranina Reddy. also Called as Ranina. Sagar is the Co - Singer and in that song he has also sung, and hence his name is also included.. When you see the Source, it supports all the entry pertaining to that particular song in the Table Entry. You are able to play the song,,, as the song is present there for Online listening and not Download. Downloading sites alone have copyright issues. Online Listening of songs in India doesnt come under the parlance of Copyright issues. Pls see her name in the song and these sites are references to prove that she has sung that song and needs to find an entry into her Discography... Sorry, Vithurgod, unless someone else jumps in, you're just going to have to be patient - I've been super busy with other things. As for what she is called, you need a source that she goes by other names. Otherwise, there is no way to connect her legitimately to the source for the song under the other name. As for copyright, you are wrong - available for listening is also a copyright violation (the song was copied to be available). We can't use those sites without clear permission of licensing.
