Ravenswood: The unacknowledged community[edit]

The Ravenswood neighborhood literally surrounds the Lincoln Square neighborhood, for which its community is actually named. Not only does this unacknowledged community make up most of the land mass comprising the Lincoln Square community, it also contains nearly a quarter of the neighboring Uptown community.

Ravenswood, which has its own Chamber of Commerce [1], and lends its name to three surrounding neighborhoods (Ravenswood Manor, Ravenswood Gardens and South East Ravenswood) was formed by a land company of the same name. Some of its partners are now well known street names like Kedzie, Wilson and Leland. The Chicago Transit Authority's Brown Line was originally named the Ravenswood Elevated (The "L") and until the 1940s, there was even a Ravenswood station at Wilson Avenue, which probably accounts for the small number of businesses in the middle of a residential area and also what was a Ravenswood hospital that looked more like an apartment building with a neon sign.

I think this heading should be aliased to Lincoln Square, Chicago. --Mr. A. 23:08, 23 February 2007 (UTC) I added the merge tag, since it appears that Lincoln Square, Chicago has a Ravenswood section that appears better written. Busjack 18:38, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rkm, thank you for your insight on Ravenswood vs. Lincoln Square. I grew up on Damen and Wilson, and when I was a child in the late '80s/early '90s, Lincoln Square referred primarily to the strip of Lincoln with the shops (between Lawrence and....can't remember the side street). The rest of the area was called Ravenswood. It is terribly frustrating to continually hear the entire area now called Lincoln Square, especially when talking with residents that have been there for decades who feel the same was as I do. People don't realize that the brown line was once called the Ravenswood line, the chase bank on Lawrence and Wolcott was called called Ravenswood Bank, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.18.147.32 (talk) 19:08, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rahm Emanuel[edit]

Should mention be made that Mayor Rahm Emanuel is a Ravenswood resident? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.239.169.230 (talk) 17:09, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

According to the boundaries cited in this article he is not a Ravenswood resident (he lives south of Montrose). So, unless there is a reliable source for the southern boundary of Ravenswood being south of Montrose, it should not be in the article. —Jeremy (talk) 17:28, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He does not live in the Ravenswood (or Lincoln Square) community area. He is a resident of the South East Ravenswood neighborhood which is a neighborhood of the Lakeview community area. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.75.135.3 (talk) 20:01, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
