Redirecting Regine Velásquez

The use of accent marks or Á á

According to a few Wikipedia editors, as well as multiple web sites, I can't find instances of her name being spelled with any accent marks. So I've redirected Regine Velásquez to Regine Velasquez, and am removing the merge template. --cholmes75 (chit chat) 00:13, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

  • This is a result of a general lack of knowledge of how to use Spanish-language accent marks in the Philippines and thus cannot have anything to do with preference. With regard to web searches, please see Talk:Andrés Bonifacio and consider it as a precedent. 210.213.172.16 22:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
  • We have never used these accent marks in our language. I don't think its ignorance as you are suggesting. Its more of a preference. When our forefathers created the Philippine official language, they wanted to establish our own identity by creating our own alphabet. What you are suggesting requires a radical change in the Philippine language and that would require a constitutional ammendment. Maoster 12:30, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Please note that the artist doesn't use the 'á' character in her name.

Tone of this page

The tone of this page is inappropriate for an encyclopedia article. I'd swear the whole thing is taken from some Regine Velasquez promotional website or something. I did a lot of clean up work, but there's still more that needs to be done so I added the clean-up tag. TheCoffee 05:38, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

  • Ok , it turns out pretty much everything was taken from [www.soundclick.com/reginevelasquez]. I did my best to rewrite most of it. TheCoffee 10:55, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
  • The tone is still very un-encyclopedic. The "Twenty Years and Still Going Strong" and "Fashionista" sections need particular attention, but the entire atricle sounds like a long promotional advertisement (as TheCoffee said) or an overzealous fan. I'm going to try to edit it later but I don't want to remove any information, except the "fashionista" section, it lacks importance and verifiability.
  • EDIT: I just finished trying to cleaup the tone of the article. I tried to make stylistic improvements and fix grammatical errors as well as remove unnecesary or irrelevant information. The article still needs a lot of work, especially since the article is huge, but only has 8 citations. A few suggestons:

—-Add citations!
—-Remove the "Fashionista" section, or at least change it radically. This seems more like fanworship than anything.

  • Fashionista section should stay because part of her success depends on her public image or persona. Please read the article "Out There on Her Own" which I posted below if you want to see citations/source. 144.101.10.81 14:25, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

—-Organise and complete the "Acting" and "Television" sections (after "Controversies")
—-Clean up the style and tone of the article some more
—-Don't use "Regine" to refer to her, it's not encyclopedic.

Hopefully I'll be able to work on the article some more; I'm also excited to see the additions/changes that others will make. The article has tons of potential.Surelyican 02:00, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Paano kita iibigin OST.jpg

Image:Paano kita iibigin OST.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:28, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

REGINE or NINA

Just wondering if regine really has higher tone than nina and or with kyla.

  • Like that's any significant to the article, which is the subject of the discussion pages. Please go to a fansite. Thank you. 209.77.246.203 09:18, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Miscellaneous comments

Regine's high notes are superhead. Any person who knows the difference can attest to that. Also, her fans persistently increase the octaves to her voice. Many descriptions about her and her achievements and abilities are overblown. The entry is supersaturated with permutations of adjectives about her "greatness", which makes the article less credible than an encyclopedia entry and more like a shrine. And when the fans change what the editors have cleaned up, the grammar is left in need of serious help. Some paragraphs were also lifted from entries about other singers, like the part that says her albums received criticism, used to be very like the one on Mariah Carey's page. I edited that paragraph a few months ago. Thanks. Doctorqui 20:41, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Please do not forget to leave a signature, or edit someone's comment and pretend that the same person wrote that comment after it has been edited. As it is, this article is a bloody fanpage, a wreck of a fan-edited encyclopedia entry. Please don't be so low as to edit even comments on the discussion page. Doctorqui 20:43, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Is there a way to prevent Velasquez's rabid fans from tampering with user comments? Doctorqui 20:41, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Apparently not. If it continues, please make a note at WP:ANI. The Evil Spartan 21:12, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Mariah Carey Controversy

Who took away the Mariah Carey paragraph in the Controversy section? It deserved to be there--User:Butterfly52

  • Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia. The controversy section which was primarily composed of rumors, has been removed according to Wikipedia Policy. This is a biographical article for a living person and must adhere to Wikipedia policy on Living Biographies. See the tag on top of this Talk page. I also posted the text below for your reference. Maoster 19:20, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

"This article must adhere to the biographies of living persons policy as it directly concerns one or more living people. Negative material, especially if potentially libelous, must be removed immediately if it is unsourced or poorly sourced. The three-revert rule does not apply to such removals. Concerns relative to this policy can be addressed on the living persons biographies noticeboard."

But it IS a fact that Regine copied Carey's tatoo. User:Butterfly52

  • to Butterfly52, I thought you were referring ot the brown monkey issue. I'm not sure if Carey even has a tattoo. Do you have a picture of it? It would be an interesting tidbit to add to the article. The problem would be getting a good reference stating that Velasquez had the tatoo made because of Carey. Showing the pictures is not enough. We need to have a statement from Velasquez saying that she copied Carey's tattoo because there are millions of people who have butterfly tattoos. If you can find a good source or reference such as a published newspaper or magazine article or an interview that could prove it, then we can add it to this encyclopedic entry. Maoster
  • To have an almost-identical tattoo placed in a similar body part screams "not coincidence!".
  • can you show me a picture of Mariah Carey with that tatoo? Can't seem to find one. Its probably a temporary tatoo that Mariah copied from someone else. Thanks. Maoster 14:05, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
  • watch the video called Breakdown and there's like a whole butterfly theme and look for the butterfly tattoo on her back!
  • it's not a tattoo it's a sticker for covering up a scar mariah got when removing a tache de beauté —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.241.65.220 (talk) 19:50, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the clarification. Regine has a tatoo... Mariah has a sticker. Maoster (talk) 21:19, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Too Many Details

The whole article is messy, and I have done some cleaning-up. An encyclopedia article does not have to include or describe every single performance, interest, or activity of Velasquez's in too much detail. There are too many adjectives and repetitions throughout the entry. Doctorqui 06:28, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

News Bulletin

Fans, we know you love Velasquez to death, but this an ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLE, not a NEWS BULLETIN of her every concert and public appearance!Doctorqui (talk) 23:11, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Reverted the article to a more current version.

The article was subjected to vandalism. Somebody reverted to an older edit but that version had a lot of problems such as broken links, missing picture files, no source cited, and some inaccuracies.

I reverted to a more recent edit. I hope that this is ok. Maoster 16:22, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Discography

Her 1992 album is called Tagalang Talaga, not Talaga Talaga. Mind your accuracy!

Ogie Alcasid

The paragraphs with quotations from Ogie Alcasid's expression of his love for Velásquez seem to have been lifted from a tabloid interview and are unworthy of gracing an encyclopedia, at least in such form. I may get around to editing it. Doctorqui 06:07, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Are we not going to include her affair with ogie alcasid? --I included it since I found reliable news links, with categorical statements of both Ogie and Regine supported by verifiable links. Florentino floro 09:19, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Regine Disambiguation

I'll be the first to admit that I'm completely oblivious to a good 90% of pop culture, but I have never heard of this woman. Can anyone here justify why she is the forward for "Regine"? Wouldn't a disambiguation page be more proper and more useful (for en.wikipedia.org/Regine)? Elysianfields (talk) 02:09, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

  • In the Philippines, when you hear the name Regine, she is the only person that comes to mind. Due to her fame and popularity in my country, Her first name has become synonymous to her even though there are other ladies in showbusiness with that name. For Example, When you say "I interviewed Regine in Singapore" A lot of people would think you interviewed Regine Velásquez in Singapore and not Regine Tolentino. But based on Wikipedia standards, I agree that the name "Regine" should have a disambiguation page. Maoster (talk) 19:03, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
  • That Velásquez is the "only person that comes to mind" when the name 'Regine' is uttered in the Philippines is a hasty generalization. There is no room for such in an ENCYCLOPEDIA.Doctorqui (talk) 05:36, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
  • That's why it's in the talk page. Its the truth though. Just go inside any mall in the Philippines and scream that "Regine is inside the mall" and people would think that you are talking about Regine Velásquez. Nobody else. Maoster (talk) 15:38, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Velásquez's early career

While Velásquez won the Asia Pacific Song Festival, her early endeavours as Chona Velásquez were unsuccessful. She was not an instant hit. She became more popular in the 90's, but actually did not have the superstar status she now is enjoying in the Philippines until later in the 90's and years 2000 and after.

Of course Velásquez is, at present, widely accepted in the Philippines as the country's top female singer, but prior to the late 90's, artists such as Rachel Alejandro and Donna Cruz enjoyed greater popularity than did Velásquez.Doctorqui 06:53, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Her rise to prominence was a long and arduous process, which makes all of her current success and stature even more special. A lot of people say that she's like Cinderella. Her Rags to Riches story is a source of inspiration to a lot of hardworking Filipinos. Maoster (talk) 19:47, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Of course her story is, if you will, inspiring. But this was a comment on the statement in the article, that Velásquez was "an instant hit after winning the Asia Pacific Song Festival," which she was not, or else "Chona Velásquez" would have lived to this day. The comment was not a personal attack, Velasquez fan.Doctorqui (talk)
  • Why so defensive all of a sudden? My comment about her being an inspiration didn't say anything about a personal attack. Maoster (talk) 15:48, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Mariah Carey - Brown Monkey Issue

That interview with Donita Rose NEVER occurred. There is no factual evidence for the information that Carey offered Velásquez any apology, that there was any need for one, or that Carey knows of Velasquez in any way. Velasquez's lying fans have tampered too much with her wikipedia article; it is borderline garbage.

The edits were also ungrammatical: "The issue clear up by Carey when she back in the US." What a pathetic edit. Doctorqui (talk) 23:03, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

  • Strongly Agree. That Brown Monkey brouhaha is nothing but a smear campaign against Velásquez by ABS-CBN. The issue came out from their website PinoyCentral and written by one of their tabloid writers. Personally, I don't understand why people would believe that Mariah Carey is capable of uttering such racist comments. Mariah Carey, coming from a Mulatto background herself (she is half african, half caucasian), is very conscientious about the negative PSYCHOLOGICAL effects of Racism. Only Uneducated-lowlifes would say such harsh words. Maoster (talk) 19:12, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Thank you. I see you can be objective when your "why-can't-people-just-be-happy-with-Velásquez" fits are absent. Of course it doesn't stop you from saying Velásquez was once again attacked. That kind of lie ("brown monkey") actually seems to have been created to win sympathy for Velásquez, not defame her.Doctorqui (talk) 20:28, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
  • That's a good theory, but the "brown monkey" issue was more likely propagated by insecure Mariah Careyfans because she can do anything for fans, Regine is not that professional like MC. Maoster (talk) 14:55, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  • No. Think about it-- the story was crafted by tabloid writers in the Philippines. The same story spread only in the Philippines. Carey is not a Filipino and is less likely to gain anything from that sort of publicity. Now Velásquez's fans have a track record of behaving very badly all over the internet. It is very easy to see that it was a story written to gain sympathy for Velásquez. I don't think she would ever approve of it, but hey-- as exemplified by you, Maoster, diva-defender man, her fans are uncontrollable. That, and the fact that she stays and should stay well out of her fans' behavior issues-- I mean, she's in show business for a living, and having fans, be they nasty or not, to support her albums and concerts is what counts. Doctorqui (talk) 23:25, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Back up your accusation with facts. Whatever your personal opinions are, please keep them away from Wikipedia. I don't know how to make it any simpler than that. Maoster (talk) 16:03, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
  • Maoster-- you're the one speculating about conspiracies against Velásquez without any facts to back up. It was obviously a publicity tactic to earn Velásquez sympathy. That story never left the Philippines, and it is expected there are many more Velásquez supporters in the Philippines (Velásquez being a major celebrity in the Philippines) than Carey supporters. I don't understand why everything has to be dumbed down for you. From your comments, it is easy to see you are not editing neutrally; you are a fan of Velásquez, and editing as one. I have never written anything in favor of Mariah Carey or Girado just to tarnish Velásquez's reputation. Clearly, you have done that many times against Carey on the discussion board. I'm surprised you haven't done it against Girado. Whoever he / she is.Doctorqui (talk) 21:40, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Doctorqui -- You have made several claims in your last statement.

1. Velásquez's camp made up that story to earn public sympathy. 2. You accuse me of writing against Carey in her discussion board. Unless you have proof to suppport these claims, you are nothing but a pathetic basher. Please stop your unproductive edits. And stop acting like you don't know who Girado is. We can trace that you are are a PLDT subscriber and a Girado Fan. LOL. Maoster (talk) 19:42, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

In Love With You

The article states that the song was a Velásquez single and a duet with Jacky Cheung, and it was a number one hit all over Asia. There is no proper documentation for this, as the source simply links to http://www.mtv-asia.com, and http://www.channelv.com/, not to any historic chart of some sort. Also, it is more appropriately a collaboration with Cheung, not a Velásquez single that just features Cheung, since according to All Music Guide, Velásquez's 'Listen Without Prejudice' fared "quite well" in a few Asian countries likely due to Cheung's presence on the album.Doctorqui 02:06, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

  • As a matter of FACT...The song was released in Velásquez 'Listen Without Prejudice' album in 1994... at the same time the single hit the airwaves. Later on, it was included in one of Cheung's compilation of hits and was never included in any of his solo albums. I do wish that some people can "Listen Without Prejudice" and stop nitpicking on this article when they obviously hate Velásquez. Why do you care so much about this article? Can't you just work on Mariah's article? Nina Girado's article? Does Velásquez pose too much of a threat against your Mariah Scarey? Why can't these crab-mental-people be happy with the "relative" success of a Filipino? Maoster (talk) 07:35, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Maoster, you are commenting like one of those trashy Velásquez fans ("Mariah Scarey"??). There is no need for that. I care that this article should be an encyclopedia article, not a fansite teeming with ludicrous lies by ludicrous, lying fans. And yes, it will be on my watchlist until the day wikipedia shuts down-- if that will ever happen.Doctorqui (talk) 19:55, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Hello Mariah Scarey - Nina Girado fan. We are happy to have you here. You are doing us a great "service" by maintaining and improving the quality of this article. Thank you very much for the free editing and proofreading.  :) Keep up the good work. Just keep your opinion in check and away from the main article. Maoster (talk) 15:04, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Maoster-- can't you see you're the one who's not keeping his opinions in check?? You are VERY biased about Velasquez. You even trash other artists' names in her favour. Also, you are disrespectful towards other people on the discussion board.Doctorqui (talk) 23:12, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
  • My opinions are not in the article. I always back up my edits with verifiable source. Disrespect? I was even thanking you and commending you for your help. Unfortunately, respect is given only to those who deserve it.  :) Btw, thanks for not adding your bulldung-drivel into the main article. Maoster (talk) 16:10, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
  • My opinions are not in the article either. And why are you accusing me of being a Mariah Carey and a Girado fan? I have written nothing in favor of Mariah Carey on Velásquez's article. Keep YOUR bullshit away from the main article AND the discussion page. The reason people cannot respect you is because you do not know how to give it. You even edit and delete comments made by other users on the discussion page, to make it appear as if you shut them up. That's how low you get. If anything, you're the one who's being protective of Velásquez the person; you are obviously more concerned about Velásquez the person rather than the Wikipedia article, which makes you a bad editor, because you are editing as a fan. I have no other intentions here but to keep the article balanced. I have no problems reflecting Velásquez's failures and triumphs; I am merely against manic peacock descriptions about Velasquez and her feats. See David Archuleta issue below.Doctorqui (talk) 21:42, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
  • DotorQui: Noticeable is the fact that when the main article gets vandalized, you are nowhere to be found. If you truly believe that you are being "unbiased" and try to keep the article "balanced", then it is your duty to also protect the article from rampant vandalism and attacks. • I am surprised that someone here thinks there is rampant vandalism and attack on Regine Velasquez's article, because there are none, there never have been. The only vandalisms I've ever seen here are always in favor of Regine, never against her. Look, they even make the encyclopedia article a bulletin of her appearances. I don't mean any offense, but there is some very unhealthy obsession going on with her fans. Just an observation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.163.222.33 (talk) 10:51, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Update on 'David Archuleta on Velásquez -- Velásquez was mentioned

It is safe to write that David Archuleta admires Velásquez's singing ability, as evidenced by an interview with Q GMA7 Philippines (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngLzq_2A2qw) and from a phone interview with Ricky Lo (see http://buzzexpress.blogspot.com/2009/05/david-archuleta-is-regine-velasquez-fan.html).

Per Archuleta: "“My favorite is Regine Velásquez. She was actually the one who got me to be an even bigger fan of Mariah Carey because she was singing all those Mariah Carey songs that I’ve never heard before. ‘Wow.’ I said, ‘Regine is so good; she’s amazing’.’”"

  • And true enough, only a seaweed of no discernible intellect like Maoster can be bothered by a non-issue re: Carey and Velasquez. Please have your paranoia treated.Doctorqui (talk) 06:29, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
  • Hahaha. Its so sad that a person of such "superior" intelligence as you would claim yourself to be, would resort to such pathetic attempts at insulting others. So sad! HAHAHAHA. Nevertheless, just keep your opinions to yourself. P.S. Something good has come out of this craziness. I have received a pledge from some fans to vigilantly watch over the main article. Voice Section / Vocal Profile

Regine Velásquez's Vocal profile: Pangako- D3 -chest voice All by my self- F5 -chest voice I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing- G5- chest voice I Have Nothing- A5 -chest voice Butterfly- F5 -chest voice

Vocalization in an interview in singapore- F6 -head tone Velásquez was globally famous for belting out in full voice notes in the 5th and 6th octave using her crystal voice and sustaining extremely high notes for long time.

Vocal Profile Velásquez's vocal profile should be noted as only 3.375 octaves. Some fans are overexaggerating this information. I have already sent in the corrected vocal profile info in the youtube video cited in this article. This is the corrected details as I have exactly posted in Regine's vocal profile video:

More ACCURATE Vocal Profile (based on this video):

  • Pangako - C3
  • Vocalization (Interview) - G5
  • sickness factoid omitted --
  • You'll Never Walk Alone - F5 [CORRECT]
  • Next song (in a yellow gown) - E5
  • This is the Moment (?) - F#5 [CORRECT]
  • ...Upang Sa'yo ay Lumayo - F#5 [CORRECT]
  • Say That You Love Me - G5 [CORRECT]

Whistles:

  • I Know - B5
  • With a Smile - D#6
  • More Than Words Can Say - F6 [CORRECT]

B5 is not a whistle note!

Based on this video, Regine's vocal range is from C3 to F6, giving her more than 3.5 octave range. C3-C4 one octave C4-C5 another one octave C5-C6 another one octave D6-F6 0.375 octave, such that 3/8=0.375. This vocal profile, stating that Velásquez has 3.375 octave voice is not verified. No one really knows what is the highest note she can produce.

TOTAL VOCAL RANGE: 4.1 octaves(A2-B6)

  • No one knows what she really can do until she forces herself to do all she can. But one thing is for sure, she has a crystal voice with more than 3.375 octave range.
  • Regine posseses a vocal range of 4 octaves when she and fellow filipina Kuh Ledesma visited Singapore, they were guested in a show and the host said that regine has a 4 octave vocal range.
  • Not because some host of some unnamed show said this at some unspecified date and time, means it is accurate. Please do not forget to leave a signature after posting on the discussion board. Thank you. Doctorqui 05:04, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
  • i have a question.... What is the difference between range and octave? do they really mean the same? pl````Aspire3624
think of it this way: an octave on a piano is a set of 8 white keys, each of which play 7 different notes(a, b, c, d, e, f, g, a, or you could call it do, re, mi, etc.). a piano has about 7 sets. that means the piano's range is 7 octaves. Regine can sing 3 octaves. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.45.184.228 (talk) 05:42, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

David Archuleta on Velásquez

Someone has been persistently writing that David Archuleta looks up to Velásquez as an influence in his music and as his favorite performer. This is an outright lie. There are no citations to support this claim, and the episode of the TV program in which Archuleta had appeared as a guest (it is broadcast all over youtube.com) merely shows Archuleta saying that Filipinos are incredibly talented. Not a single mention of Regine Velásquez was made, and Velásquez herself did not appear on said episode, effectively excluding her from Archuleta's praise for the performers on the occasion.Doctorqui (talk) 15:28, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

The unsigned comment which had previously appeared in this space is superfluous, as I had already corrected myself on the matter even before the unsigned comment was posted. Please note that my original correction was done on May 17, 2009. This is consistent with a comment that I posted on the section 'In Love With You,' mentioning that "I have no problems reflecting [Velásquez's] triumphs." The reason why 'May 17' is no longer shown, is because I update my signature every time I edit. I see now that I should leave the old signature and post another, should the situation arise again.

I even provided a link to the exact same video and a link to the Ricky Lo article. Please see the section immediately following.

I have henceforth deleted the long, unsigned comment, and replaced it in the following section, with a mention of the interview that occurred in Malaysia (and was posted on an Indonesian website), plus the given link from the unsigned comment. Please review the comments page in full before posting responses, and DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE A SIGNATURE. Thank you.Doctorqui (talk) 06:51, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

DoReMi Remake

To 112.201.114.203, I think this is yet to be confirmed. Rumors has it that this will be a TV REMAKE by GMA-7. The reported young artists are Jennylyn Mercado, Yasmien Kurdi, and either of Katrina Halili or Rhian Ramos.

Better known as Velasquez or Velasquez-Alcasid..or does it matter?

She communicates with the public as Velasquez-Alcasid:

and is named as such in her local press:

User:Hullaballoo_Wolfowitz feels that it is "plainly not common form of name, per GNews etc;". It took a revert to produce this opinion as this user (in my experience) is in the habit of ignoring policy when convienient and then using any and every WP:xxxx as vague obstacles to good faith editing. This time, not even that was provided - only personal opinion after removal of content. I'd like to note that I did not make the original edit. I undid the revert by User:Hullaballoo_Wolfowitz because no explaination was given by this self-appointed guardian of BLPs.

There are things like this:

The title uses her maiden name, the article uses the married.

And, as User:Hullaballoo_Wolfowitz correctly notes when pressed, the Google News aggregator has English language article references using her maiden name. Unfortunately, as User:Hullaballoo_Wolfowitz has stated in the past, that list isn't even close to a valid citation.

Since this would seem to be a dispute between the uninformed, I've removed the statement entirely. Yes, I have noticed the page title :-). Comments? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CanuckMike (talkcontribs) 17:22, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

GOCE Copy-edit

Hi Twofingered Typist

Thanks for extensively going through the article. Truly appreciate the improvements you have made and I am extremely satisfied with the outcome so far. I had read through it, in the hopes of assisting you too, but did not make any edits, in respect of the time you currently spend doing so. Just very minimal typos I have caught which I have listed below (and also a minor inquiry/point of discussion)

Lead

  • With the release of Covers, Vol. 1 (2004), Velasquez eighth album had sales exceeding 200,000, more than any other solo artist in the Philippines.

-On the first read, it did sound like this was her eight (consecutive) album, whereas the objective I had it mind was to highlight that this was her eight album that had exceeded 200,000 copies. Also, does Velasquez need to be in a possessive form? (very minor, I hope you don't mind me bringing it up, ;-))

Early career

  • There was an instance where you used Velasquez' as the possesive form, and the rest of the article used Velasquez's

New image and Independence, R2K, and Reigne

  • sang "Written In The Sand" the Peninsual Manila - just a misspelled word and maybe an 'at'
  • Reigne went on to sell more than 120,000 units and it given a triple platinum certification by the PARI - 'it was given'

Covers Volume 1 & Volume 2

  • due in part to the cots of securing music licensing for songs by local songwriters. - typo for 'cost'

Resurgence and R3.0

  • Best Christmas Recording for "Hele ni Inay]]" at the 27th Awit Awards - delete bracket

Acting career

  • Velasquez's performance won the |10th Golden Screen award for Best Actress - delete pipe

So far, those are the ones I saw. Didn't mean to distract you while you're at it. You've been a really big help on improving the article's structure Pseud 14 (talk) 13:39, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

Pseud 14  Done thanks - still working on the article. You should feel free to correct any "anomalies" you find. Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:58, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

Spot checks

@Pseud 14: Going to start posting spot checks today. Would love to see this back at FAC before the end of the year. ceranthor 16:00, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

Thanks @Ceranthor: look forward to working on it! Pseud 14 (talk) 12:16, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pseud 14: Posting soon! Going to go through section by section. ceranthor 12:36, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Early life
  • "At age four, Velasquez became interested in music. She enjoyed listening to songs her father sang to lull her to sleep.[3]" - This is not supported by the corresponding reference.
  • Put in the right ref from a CNN interview transcript.
  • " Since she was still learning to read, her father sang her the melodies and she eventually memorized the lyrics.[3]" - Same; not supported by the reference.
  • Took this out and revised wording supported by the CNN interview ref.
  • "She references "Close to You" by the Carpenters and "Mr. DJ" by Sharon Cuneta as two of the first songs she learned to sing.[11]" - While the second half of this claim is supported by the ref, the first half is not.
  • Took out the first half, reworded.
  • "By the age of six, Velasquez began intensive vocal training with her father who submerged her neck-deep in sea water and had her sing vocal runs.[12][13]" - supported by both refs
  • "In 1976, Velasquez placed third in her first singing competition on Betty Mendez Livioco's The Tita Betty's Children Show.[15]" - supported by the ref
  • "When she was nine, her family moved to Balagtas, Bulacan where she continued her elementary education at St. Lawrence Academy.[3] " - ref doesn't say anything about elementary education
  • You're right. Removed 'elementary'
  • "She won and signed a record deal.[15]" - not supported by the ref
  • Put in the right ref from the BusinessWorld article.

@Pseud 14: This is just one short section. I think you need to go through and really closely check that you haven't mixed up refs somewhere along the line, because it seems like there are quite a lot of sourcing issues. ceranthor 14:32, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

@Ceranthor: Thanks so much for you initial detailed spot checks. I will definitely take a closer look/fix the issues and work on this on the weekend. Pseud 14 (talk) 12:55, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pseud 14: I can post more extensive spot checks over the weekend too. ceranthor 13:05, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
@Ceranthor: Highly appreciate that! Thanks for putting in some time to do it! I have addressed the initial checks per the above. Pseud 14 (talk) 20:07, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

@Pseud 14: Bit more below. ceranthor 19:08, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

Other activities and personal life
  • "She became associated with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 2002,[235]" - this says production took place during 2001
  • Corrected
  • "The production was nominated for the UNICEF Child Rights Award.[236]" - checks out
  • "One of Velasquez's highest-profile benefit concert appearances was on ABS-CBN's 2002 special, One Night with Regine,[79] during which she performed at the National Museum of the Philippines in support of the Bantay Bata Foundation, a child welfare organization.[79] " - checks out
  • "In 2009, Velasquez headlined a musical special, After The Rain, a nationally televised fundraiser in the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana.[238]" - I don't see any specific mention of Ketsana
  • Put in Ondoy in enclosure to provide clarity, as it was the typhoon name mentioned in the article.
  • "In November 2013, proceeds from the sales of her album Hulog Ka Ng Langit were donated to the Philippine Red Cross in support of the Typhoon Haiyan relief.[242]" - should probably note that Haiyan is also known as Yolanda
  • Same as above. Yolanda in enclosure.
  • "She recorded and promoted a series of television commercials for American fast food restaurant chains, Wendy's and KFC.[243] " - ref 243 is broken
  • Fixed broken link. Should be working now.
  • " and in December the couple married in Nasugbu, Batangas.[251]" - checks out
Awards
  • "Throughout Velasquez's career, she has collected many honors and awards, including MTV Asia's Favorite Artist Philippines in 2002[76] and 2003,[255]" - first checks out, but the second just says she won a regional award
  • Regional award would refer to these recognitions i.e. Favorite Artist Philippines, Favorite Artist Malaysia, Favorite Artist Singapore, etc. You can also check-out MTV Asia Awards - Regional Awards
  • "and the Aliw Awards' Entertainer of the Year in 2007[257] and 2009.[258]" - both check out
  • "In a career spanning more than 30 years, Velasquez has sold more than seven million records in the Philippines and a further 1.5 million in Asia, making her the biggest-selling Filipino artist in OPM history.[88]" - checks out
  • "She is also the only Filipino artist to have tallied eight albums exceeding sales of 200,000 copies each.[88] " - source doesn't say only
  • Removed "only" and revised statement.
  • "Aside from her music career, Velasquez has received recognition for her work in television and film; she was given the Box Office Queen award in 2002,[169] the Star Awards for Television's Best Actress in 2002,[172] and the Golden Screen Awards' Best Actress in 2013.[194] " - all check out
  • "In December 2007, Velasquez was honored with a star on the Philippines' Walk of Fame.[266]" - checks out

Let me know once these are fixed/addressed. ceranthor 21:04, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

@Ceranthor: the above should be addressed. Let me know if it is to your satisfaction and if you have some more spotchecks as well. Truly appreciate your time! Pseud 14 (talk) 18:40, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Music career
1
  • "After winning Ang Bagong Kampeon, Velasquez was signed to OctoArts International (now PolyEast Records).[3]" - mostly matches source; though you shouldn't cite the "now PolyEast Records" with the same source as it doesn't state that; that should have a separate citation.
  • Removed mention of PolyEast
  • " He and Henares, who both served as executive producers,[19] planned to market Velasquez as one of their main female pop artists, hoping to attain commercial success as they had done with Nora Aunor and Sharon Cuneta.[20]" - trusting [19] in good faith; "planned to market Velasquez as one of their main female pop artists, hoping to attain commercial success as they had done with Nora Aunor and Sharon Cuneta." - this is just not backed up by the source at all
  • Remove latter statement
  • "She made promotional appearances on the ABS-CBN television variety shows Triple Treat and Teen Pan Alley.[21][22]" - supported by [21]; think [22]'s link might be broken?
  • Removed broken link
2
  • " In July 1990, Velasquez headlined her first major concert as a solo artist in support of the album at the Folk Arts Theater.[26][27]" - both check out
  • "Velasquez received a letter from the production company offering intensive musical theater training in the United Kingdom; she declined the offer citing inadequate theatrical experience.[31]" - it seems like that was one of several reasons
  • Clarified as "one of the several reasons"
  • "The album's lead single "Buhay Ng Buhay Ko", originally recorded by Leah Navarro, was also written by Pedero, who Velasquez previously worked with on Nineteen 90.[33][34]" - can't see 33; 34 only seems to support original recording by Navarro...
  • Added source referring to the liner notes, if that is acceptable as credit to Pedero being the songwriter?
3
  • "In December 1994, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reported that Listen Without Prejudice had sold more than 600,000 copies regionally and a further 100,000 in the Philippines, making it the best-selling album of her career.[5][43]" - source 5 says "selling more than 700,000 copies in Asia"; nothing about 100,000 in Phil
  • Added second source to support the breakdown
  • "AllMusic's David Gonzales praised it as "an even better album",[46] but criticized the record for being very similar to the formula used on Listen Without Prejudice.[46]" - checks out
  • "n 1997, Velasquez parted from PolyCosmic and signed a five-album recording contract with VIVA Records.[44][18]" - switch the ref order so it's [18][44]; [44], the online source, doesn't back up any of this info!
  • I stand corrected, added the correct source. It says six-album contract.
4
  • "The album's lead single was a cover of Jeffrey Osborne's "On The Wings of Love".[58] " - where does it say it's a cover of his version?
  • Added liner notes as source, if that is acceptable. Osborne being the songwriter and artist to help clarify?
  • "The television special drew a worldwide audience of more than 800 million viewers with its core international broadcast lasting for 28 hours, beginning with Kiribati, Line Islands and culminating in American Samoa.[60][61]"
  • Corrected. It's 25 hours.
  • "Despite the negative critical response,[67] the album sold more than 200,000 copies.[44][68]" - [68] does not say 28 hours
  • Think it's for the above line, I would assume?
5
  • "In October 2004, Velasquez released her twelfth studio album, Covers, Vol. 1—her fourth record containing only covers.[85]" - source says nothing about this
  • Reworded, took out the latter statement. Would it be assuming in good faith on the chronology of her studio album releases based on her discography?
  • "Covers, Vol. 1 sold more than 200,000 copies domestically and became her eighth album to have exceeded that sales mark, more than any other solo artist in the Philippines.[68][88]" - don't see this in 88; 68 appears to be broken
  • Reworded to 6x platinum based on source. Source seems to be accessible. Fixed link to have the archive go first.
  • "The Manila Bulletin complimented Velasquez's "versatility" and the album tracks' "jazzy and blues-y interpretation".[90]" - can't view; accepting in good faith
  • "For the show, she won Best Female Major Concert Act and Entertainer of the Year at the 20th Aliw Awards.[93]" - checks out
6
  • " Velasquez signed a recording contract with Universal Records,[99] and released her fourteenth studio album Low Key in November 2008.[100]" - source says released December 2008; nothing about 14th album
  • Removed mention of 14th album. Realized there's too many use of chronology on releases.
  • "She made two television appearances in 2009. The biographical documentary and musical, Roots to Riches chronicled her life, described her personal and professional struggles, and included musical performances filmed in her hometown of Malolos, Bulacan.[103]" - nothing about making two television appearances in 2009 in the source; source says one concert rather than multiple performances
  • Fixed and clarified
  • "The show, Silver, was cut short after Velasquez suffered from acute laryngitis due to a viral infection.[115]" - nothing about laryngitis as far as I can tell?
  • Fixed. Only referred to viral infection
7/8
  • "On November 28, 2013, her sixteenth studio album, Hulog Ka Ng Langit, was released.[125]" - trusting in good faith
  • "Due to the concert's positive critical reception,[143] Velasquez won two awards for Best Female Concert Performer at the 48th Box Office Entertainment Awards,[144] and the 6th Edukcircle Awards.[145]" - 143 checks out; 144 checks out; 145 actually says "Most Influential Concert Performers of the Year"
  • Clarified and included mention of the award
  • " R3.0 was released on October 21, 2017. In support of the album, Velasquez headlined the R3.0 Concert at the Mall of Asia Arena.[154]" - link is broken
  • Fixed dead link. Archived link should be working.
Acting career
  • "She continued to appear in a series of supporting roles in comedies that included Pik Pak Boom (1988) and Elvis and James 2 (1990).[159][160]" - nothing about Elvis or James 2 in either source.
  • Added recent source to refer to the latter film
  • "In May 1996, she made her cinematic debut in a leading role, playing a music teacher in Ike Jarlego's romantic comedy film, Wanted Perfect Mother.[151]" - nothing about "may 1996"
  • Fixed
  • "The film reunited her with Bernal and Muhlach.[167] Vera was impressed with the film's direction and writing, and described her performance as "sunny good nature", played with a "light comic touch".[168]" - checks out
  • " Despite the negative review, the performance earned Velasquez FAMAS[183] and FAP[184] awards nomination for Best Actress. In 2008, she returned to prime time television playing the title role in the comedy series Ako Si Kim Sam Soon, an adaption of the South Korean television show.[185]" - checks out
  • "Five years after her last film appearance, Velasquez worked with Bernal and Muhlach for the third time in the romantic comedy Of All The Things (2012).[192]" - checks out (except the "five years" bit)
  • Removed mention of 'five years'

@Pseud 14: Artistry comments below. Will get to influence ASAP.
Artistry
  • "She was drawn to traditional songs instead of nursery rhymes because of this routine. Frank Sinatra's 1943 cover of "You'll Never Know" was a nightly staple.[151]" - neither of these are supported by the source; it says "Velasquez called her mother Teresita onstage to sing Vera Lynn’s “You’ll Never Know” with a recording of her late father Gerry"; nothing about nursery rhymes
  • Got the CNN transcript source for the nursery rhymes. Removed the latter.
  • "Her music is strongly influenced by American music and she credits Sheena Easton, Angela Bofill, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey as being very important in her early years.[197][6]" - not sure I see the first bit about "her music is strongly influenced by American music"; the second half is supported by both sources; switch the order to [6][197]
  • Reworded, the first part
  • "She has also spoken fondly of Filipino songwriters like George Canseco, Rey Valera, Basil Valdez, Ryan Cayabyab and Willy Cruz.[200]" - the source doesn't say anything about her speaking fondly of these artists, just that she performs their music
  • Reworded to clarify
  • "Velasquez began working with foreign songwriters with her first regional album, Listen Without Prejudice.[39] The record was strongly influenced by adventurous, contemporary music with most of the songs using syncopated backbeats with hip-hop influences.[39]" - Don't see any support for the foreign songwriters bit. Second sentence is supported by the ref.
  • Referred to liner notes for songwriters list, if that is acceptable.
  • "Most of the tracks are reflectively melancholic, lyrical and poetic.[201]" - not what the ref says; just that particular songs are melancholic/lyrical/poetic
  • Reworded to clarify as a general description, not in entirety.
  • "Velasquez's eleventh studio album Reigne" - typo?
  • It's how her album is spelled a play on her name with I an G switched (so you would say it as 'reign')
  • "Velasquez is known for her use of vocal belting.[5]" - nothing about belting
  • Source added.
  • "Velasquez credits the intensive vocal training she received from her father as a child.[11] She said of going through vocal runs while submerged in neck-deep sea-water, "My father did that ... it was supposed to make my stomach muscle stronger ... develop my lung power ... make my voice stronger."[11]" - checks out
  • "Velasquez is a soprano[208] and is often praised for her range and technical ability.[5]" - 208 accepting on good faith; 5 seems to check out. ceranthor 18:16, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

  1. Is it well written?
    A. The prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct:
Quite clear, to my mind very good, though I tend to get a bit lost as many of the musical and film career sections are just lists of her accomplishments, albums, songs and films — this is quite acceptable, by the way, but it can make reading a little less interesting than it could be. This doesn't preclude it from GA though, good work!
    B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation:
Great work on the structure, I think it works well.
  2. Is it verifiable with no original research?
    A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline:
    B. All in-line citations are from reliable sources, including those for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons—science-based articles should follow the scientific citation guidelines:
I'm working through this - there are a lot so this is going to take some time! Going to do this section by section:

I have to say, this is a most meticulously references and detailed article about the singer, excellent work. General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: None required.

Overall: Article new enough, long enough, is neutral and well-sourced. Earwig flagged a few long quotes. Hooks are interesting. However, for the first, the article states she was the "first [...] Asian solo artist" to perform at the hall whereas the hook states she was "the first artist of Asian descent to stage a solo performance" at the hall (the latter is supported by the source). If I am not mistaken, the source for the second hook only states that she lent her voice for the character's yell, not in which TV series she did it. I also can't find any mention of the second hook in the article. Pamzeis (talk) 02:47, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the review, Pamzeis. For the main hook, I was trying to avoid close paraphrasing (WP:PARAPHRASE), that I elaborated her being someone of Asian descent (as opposed simply an 'Asian' artist as mentioned in the source). Agreed on the second hook, that trivial information isn't mentioned in the article but just the film, so I am scrapping it out. Just proposing the main hook instead. Hopefully that provides some clarity. Happy to answer additional comments you may have. Pseud 14 (talk) 14:11, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, Pseud 14. I'm still concerned about how accurate it is (in the article and hook) as the sources do not state that she was the first Asian solo artist but rather the first Asian tartist to stage a solo performance. Saying that she is the first of Asian descent may be inaccurate as there may be artists who performed that are of Asian descent but aren't Asian. Perhaps you could reword it in the article (e.g. In 1991, Velasquez made her North American concert debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the first solo performance from an Asian artist)? As for the hook, maybe:
Let me know what you think. Pamzeis (talk) 14:33, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
@Pamzeis: Saying "to perform alone" is a bit awkward to describe her doing a solo concert, I did a minor reword of the ALT above. I got rid of 'Asian descent', as I'm also trying to limit the hook to less than 200 characters. Let me know if the above is suitable? Pseud 14 (talk) 15:41, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
  • There's a vague confusion between solo concert vis-à-vis solo performance so I found another source that confirms it was in fact a solo concert. Adding this as an additional source for the hook. (e.g. includes a featured guest, musical director, etc) Pseud 14 (talk) 00:40, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
  • Thank you. This is good to go. Pamzeis (talk) 02:26, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Copyedit request

Hey Pseud 14, a few questions. If you could respond to each point as if each were its own conversation that'd be lovely.

  • IPA transcription: You might want to double-check the IPA for her common name, as it doesn't match the {{respell}} template. The second ɪ should be an i: if the vowel is elongated.Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:12, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

  • During production, she engaged Japanese songwriters including Mariya Takeuchi and Kazufumi Miyazawa. I'd use either collaborated or worked with for a more cooperative feel than engaged. Is there a reason why the Japanese songwriters are being singled out? I assume Tatsushi Umeyaki wasn't mentioned because there isn't an article on him.Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:12, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
  • Fixed for all instances. For My Love Emotion a majority of songwriters she's worked with were Japanese. Also correct, I singled out notable songwriters with Wiki articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pseud 14 (talkcontribs)
Question? Question: Looking at the article for the album, the track list suggests that she worked with more non-Japanese songwriters on it, unless the liner notes say something different?Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:50, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
  • You're right, I did miss that. Apologies for the confusion. I was probably thinking of the EP which was specifically marketed in Japan. I wanted to word it to highlight that she's worked with notable Japanese songwriters nonetheless. Feel free to make changes as how you see fit. Thanks for being thorough. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pseud 14 (talkcontribs)
Done. I removed the sentence and the citation. As a suggestion, if you want to highlight her working with notable Japanese songwriters, you might want to find multiple albums in which she collaborated with them and list the albums, but that'd also open a can of worms: what about American songwriters? European songwriters? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:18, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

@Tenryuu: appreciate your time and improvements on the article. I do have something very minor I wanted to raise, as it has come up before in the article's peer review regarding beginning the article with the full name as mentioned here, your thoughts? Pseud 14 (talk) 20:29, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Okay, I think that's everything on my end. In regards to the full name, I think you can consult MOS:BORNNAME for guidance. I don't really have an opinion either way as to whether Regine Velasquez should be taken out from the lead and replaced with her birth name or not, as she technically changes her first name by one letter. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:33, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Filipino(s) refer to people who are citizens or native of the Philippines. And while there is a distinction in masculine and feminine form, usage should be neutral and is consistent with the writing convention in this article (e.g. Filipino artists, Filipino songwriters). Reviews in the GAN and FAC process has not deemed this contentious. Pseud 14 (talk) 15:22, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
And yet, she is referred to as an actrESS, and two people now disagree with the earlier consensus of "Filipino". 2A02:8071:184:DA00:E925:895A:60C7:D542 (talk) 15:31, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

This “2A02….” IP-Addressee is correct — and applied WP:Civility (more or less / más o menos / humigit-kumulang Tagalog ) in using Talk and then in validating via Philippines. We all know that languages change and adapt constantly, and demonyms are no longer neutral (if they ever were) in gendered usage. It is crystal clear that a cisgender woman like Ms. Velasquez — when she is being referred to as an individual !! — should be characterized as Filipina. At the risk of triggering a big-foot Revert on myself, I am going to fix this when I have a chance (if it has not already been corrected). MILLIONS will see this Featured Article today (thanks & kudos to the experienced editors that made this happen! — I knew nothing about her and now plan to enjoy her music) and there are roughly 2 billion people for whom English is not their 1st language but who use it regularly. Those who visit WP:EN today should see this corrected. An obsolete consensus should not be used to prevent correcting an obvious demonym error. She is NOT plural; she is one person. Left Central (talk) 15:49, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Left Central, my point is generally based on WP:STATUSQUO, as this has never came up in any commentaries from editors when I brought this to GAN or FAC. Some Filipino BLPs employ the use of neutral demonyms while some are gender specific. My position was of the former. Do I have a strong opinion about either - perhaps no. And I agree, there is not much need for a consensus because you raise a fair point on adaptability and the changing times. And personally, this is an issue that I won't be going into WP:POINT territory. As one would say, "let's not lose sleep over this". And I'm glad you plan on enjoying her music. Pseud 14 (talk) 16:24, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
WP:STATUSQUO is part of an essay. The relevant policy is Wikipedia:CONSENSUS - note the section Wikipedia:Consensus#Consensus can change. 2A02:8071:184:DA00:F424:9632:1E3B:D8BB (talk) 19:34, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Question about the name's pronunciation

Is there a source or a reference about the pronunciation of her name? Shouldn't it be "Reh-JEEN" instead of Rih-JEEN? Filipino actors and actresses pronounce it as such. I'm Not saying that it is wrong. Again, just looking for a credible source to overturn my previous statement. --Likhasik (talk) 16:24, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

@Likhasik: I would refer you to the WP:GOCE copyedit of this article above for H:IPA-EN and H:RESPELL. Pseud 14 (talk) 16:30, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
@Pseud 14 Aight I did not get that. Can you give me some sort of gist? I am not a pro here in Wikipedia and that's a hefty length of text to be read. Just a short summary please --Likhasik (talk) 16:35, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
The IPA transcription is (/rɪˈn/) (see: Regine), the first "e" is transcribed as /ɪ/ and its English respelling is 'ih' as in "historic" (not 'eh' as in prestige). We generally do not rely on how we hear people say it on TV. Pseud 14 (talk) 18:56, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Wikipedia itself is not a reliable source - see WP:CIRCULAR. I'm also still unclear on who exactly "we" is. My feeling is we should rely less on "we" and more on actual sources. 2A02:8071:184:DA00:5821:5C4D:980C:9689 (talk) 11:26, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Bolding of stage name

Her stage name, "Regine Velasquez", should be bolded in the lead along with her birth name per MOS:BOLDALTNAMES. The presumable justification for not bolding is because it is just one letter off from her real name, but I think this underscores the need to highlight an otherwise subtle difference, for the reader's benefit. Right now, the first sentence immediately begs the question as to why the bold doesn't correspond with the title. — Goszei (talk) 23:06, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Lead section

The sentence "Referred to as "Asia's Songbird", she has consistently been credited with inspiring a generation of Filipino singers." shall be moved to the first sentence of the lead. This is to be consistent with other articles, example: Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc. The lead should be changed to:

Regina Encarnacion Ansong Velasquez (/rɪˈdʒiːn vɛˈlæskɛz/ rih-JEEN veh-LAS-kez; born April 22, 1970) is a Filipino singer and actress. Referred to as "Asia's Songbird", she is known for her vocal range and belting technique. She had unorthodox voice training during her childhood, where she was immersed neck-deep in the sea. An influential figure in Philippine popular culture, she has consistently been credited with inspiring a generation of Filipino singers. Velasquez rose to prominence after winning the television talent show Ang Bagong Kampeon in 1984 and the Asia Pacific Singing Contest in 1989. Under the name Chona, she signed a recording contract with OctoArts International in 1986 and released the single "Love Me Again", which was commercially unsuccessful. The following year, she adopted the stage name Regine Velasquez for her debut studio album, Regine (1987), under the guidance of Viva Records executive Vic del Rosario and producer Ronnie Henares. She explored Manila sound and kundiman genres on her second and third studio albums, Nineteen 90 (1990) and Tagala Talaga (1991).
After signing an international record deal with PolyGram Records, Velasquez achieved commercial success in some Asian territories with her fifth album Listen Without Prejudice (1994), which sold more than 700,000 copies and became her highest-selling album to date, aided by its lead single "In Love with You". She experimented further with jazz and adult contemporary genres on My Love Emotion (1995), while she recorded covers on Retro (1996). After she left PolyGram to sign with Mark J. Feist's MJF Company in 1998, she released the R&B-influenced album Drawn. Velasquez's follow-up record, R2K (1999), was supported by remakes of "On the Wings of Love", "I'll Never Love This Way Again", and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing", and was subsequently certified twelve-times platinum by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI).
Velasquez played leading roles in the romantic comedies Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw (2000) and Pangako Ikaw Lang (2001), and received the Box Office Entertainment Award for Box Office Queen for the latter. Her performance as an intellectually disabled woman in an episode of the anthology series Maalaala Mo Kaya (2001) earned her a Star Award for Best Actress. She later starred in the prime time television series Forever in My Heart (2004), Ako si Kim Samsoon (2008), Totoy Bato (2009), Diva (2010), I Heart You, Pare! (2011), and Poor Señorita (2016). Velasquez also won the Golden Screen Award for Best Actress for playing a document forger in the comedy film Of All the Things (2012). She expanded her career into reality television talent shows as a presenter on Star for a Night (2002), Pinoy Pop Superstar (2004), and The Clash (2018), and as a judge on StarStruck (2015) and Idol Philippines (2019).
Having sold more than seven million records domestically and 1.5 million in Asia, Velasquez is the best-selling Filipino music artist of all time. Her accolades include two Asian Television Awards, two MTV Asia Awards, 22 Awit Awards, 16 Aliw Awards (including 3 Entertainer of the Year wins), 22 Box Office Entertainment Awards, and 14 Star Awards for Music.
