Intentions for the article[edit]

Unless anyone has objections I plan on improving this page and developing it into a genre page like Horror podcast except based on the Category:Religion and spirituality podcasts genre. After some development I'll move it from the current "Godcasting" to "Religion and Spirituality Podcasts." TipsyElephant (talk) 05:40, 25 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This page is about a term which was popular 15 years ago but doesn't see much use today. If you want to make an article about religion/spirituality podcasts, I encourage you to either create a new page or expand the Uses of podcasting article. Jdcompguy (talk) 06:19, 25 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The term explicitly means "religious uses of podcasting", which personally I think means that it should either be expanded to encompass the genre it's describing or it should be merged into either Uses of podcasting or Podcast because currently it's a stub that won't ever get bigger because the subject is so narrow in scope—not to mention that the article currently contains roughly the same amount of content as the one line in Uses of podcasting. If you are uncomfortable expanding the topic or merging the article then we need to decide what to do with the article because as it is the article does not meet either of the guidelines for WP:N or WP:NOTSLANG (if the article is explicitly meant to define and explain the usage of the term Godcasting as opposed to the genre). The article has been nominated for deletion twice in the archives for being a neologism and for lacking notability, which both appear to still hold true as well as it's violation of WP:NOTSLANG. Multiple people in the deletion discussions also suggested either merging or repurposing the page. I suggest that we nominate the article for deletion, merge the contents into either Uses of podcasting or Podcast, or move the article to Religion and spirituality podcasts, Craig Patchett, The Godcast, or the Godcast Network. I think the title of the article should be changed based on the guideline WP:COMMONNAME. "Godcasting" was a neologism that as far as I can tell never gained enough popularity to become commonplace in the English language. If you look up "Godcasting" it doesn't come up in most online dictionaries, and if you search "Godcast" it only comes up in a few. If we decide to keep the title I think we should at least move it to "Godcast" instead of "Godcasting" because it actually appears in dictionaries. However, "Religion and spirituality podcasts" is much more recognizable and I would expect that other people would be much more likely to search for something similar to that than they would for "godcasting". Although, I have to admit "Religion and spirituality podcasts" is not nearly as concise and a redirect from "Godcasting" would definitely be appropriate. I am promoting this article to the Top importance level for the podcasting project based on the ongoing discussion at the wikiproject's talk page Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Podcasting#Quality_&_Importance_Graph. The scope of the article is very broad as it covers an entire genre of podcasting.

Archived source[edit]

The Boston Globe source written by Megan Tench requires a subscription or payment to access it's contents. I'm not sure how paid sources are used, but if anyone knows then go for it. Ideas for Expanding[edit]

I'm looking over other Wikipedia pages that cover genres and I've found a few ideas for potential sections that could be added to this article. For instance, sections dedicated to decades (i.e. 00s, 10s, 20s), subgenres or hybrid genres (i.e. Christian, Muslim, Jewish or Methodist, Baptist, Anglican, etc.), lists of religious podcast networks, religious podcasting in different countries, live events, Criticisms/controversies/reception, and impact/influence on society. Legitimacy of the Patent[edit]

I can't actually find the patent that the article claims Craig Patchett has on the term Godcast. Does anyone have a link to the patent or at least a source stating that he patented the term. Godcasting → Religion and spirituality podcast – The article is a dictionary entry for an old neologism that never gained popular usage, which violates the guidelines outlined by WP:NOTSLANG. When searching for variations of the subject title in Google News, there are little to no sources that use the word as defined here and instead there are quite a few with alternative meanings (i.e. Casting an actor as God, Podcasting better than other people, podcasting about hip hop "gods", invoking spiritual deities, etc). When searching online dictionaries, entries for "godcasting" are virtually non-existent, but "godcast" comes up occasionally. There are other neologisms with just as much legitimacy as "Godcasting", which do not have Wikipedia articles for many of the same reasons (i.e. "Cyber Sermons", "iGod", and "Pod Preachers"). Given the lack of depth in content and ambiguous meaning the current article as a dictionary entry likely does not meet WP:N (the article was previously nominated for deletion on two separate occasions here and here). Considering the origins of the term, the article could be moved to "The Godcast Network" or "Craig Patchett", however there are even fewer sources for those subjects and the move would likely result in a deletion based on WP:N. Given that the term "godcast" can be defined as a religion and spirituality podcast the title "Religion and spirituality podcast" would be more appropriate in light of the guideline outlined at WP:COMMONNAME. In addition, there are already articles like Horror podcast and Political podcast that have corresponding categories at Category:Horror podcasts and Category:Political podcasts, whereas there is a category named Category:Religion and spirituality podcasts without a corresponding Religion and spirituality podcast article. When words such as "religion", "spirituality", and "podcast" are searched for on Google News there are substantial sources because the subject is much broader in scope, and the subject will likely continue gaining content as podcasts are likely to continue to be used for religion and spirituality purposes.
