Article Build Out[edit]

I'm going to take a stab at updating this page so that it doesn't meet Stub criteria anymore. I'll post sections as completed here for review before making updates. Squatch347 (talk) 14:34, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Westwood One removed[edit]

I tried and failed to understand how the "Westwood One" template was relevant in this article, as Edelman isn't in the template, and is not mentioned in any of the articles about that network (as far as I could see, anyway). It turns out Template:ABC Radio was moved to Template:Cumulus Media Networks in 2009, that template was moved to Template:Citadel Media in 2011, and that template was moved to Template:Westwood One in 2014. Edelman had a connection to ABC Radio Networks, but the current Westwood One template is completely unconnected to him. --bonadea contributions talk 08:24, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Done In first sentence, replace chairman and co-founder of Edelman Financial Services, LLC, with founder of Edelman Financial Engines,.
  •  Not done Also in first sentence, replace several with 10 (per article body).
I am concerned that this number could become outdated if he releases a new book and no one updates the page. I would rather keep this generalised statement for now, which means less work for editors in the future. Z1720 (talk) 20:13, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Done Delete , syndicated by Syndicated Solutions, which is no longer accurate.[8]
  •  Not done Adding after Edelman was also the host of the public television show The Truth About Money with Ric Edelman.:
Edelman is the founder of the RIA Digital Assets Council[9] and the Funding Our Future Coalition, with the Bipartisan Policy Center.[10]
I do not believe this information is notable for Edelman's biography. Z1720 (talk) 20:13, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Deleting
Done Edelman was ranked the #1 Independent Financial Advisor in the United States by Barron’s in 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2018.[11][12] For 2018, Edelman was ranked #1.[12]
I recommend moving this information into the new "Industry recognition" section (below), where I've also provided details on how I propose updating it.
Moved. I created a new "Recognition" section and moved it there. I did not assess its inclusion because the editor looking at your suggestion for that section should do that. Z1720 (talk) 20:13, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Done Deleting He is an alumnus of Glassboro State College, now Rowan University, with a bachelor's degree in communications.[citation needed] – I recommend moving this information into the new "Personal life" section (below), and I've provided a source for it.
  •  Done Deleting In October 2016, Jean and Ric Edelman donated $25 million to the Edelman Fossil Park at Rowan University.[13] – I recommend moving this information into the new "Personal life" section (below).
I do not recommend that this is included in the article. Making a donation is not notable unless they have an active role in the organisation. Z1720 (talk) 20:13, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Edelman Financial[edit]

Updating section as follows:

Edelman Financial Engines
Ric and Jean Edelman co-founded Edelman Financial Services, LLC. is a financial advisory firm, in 1987 with offices in the Washington D.C., New York, Orange County, and Dallas metro areas.[14] He was chairman of the company from 1987 to 2018.[7] Edelman sold a majority stake of Edelman Financial Services to Sanders Morris Harris Group, a wealth management firm, in 2005.[2] In 2015, private equity firm Hellman & Friedman became the majority owner of Edelman Financial Services.[15] In 2018, Hellman & Friedman also took the merged Edelman Financial Services with another firm, Financial Engines, private and merged the two firms into the newly named to form Edelman Financial Engines.[16][17] Ric Edelman took up the a position on the Board board of the combined firm as chairman of, where he oversees financial education and client experience.[citation needed][18] In 2019, InvestmentNews named Edelman to its list of "20 people who helped shape the financial planning industry."[19]

Partly done I renamed the section "Business career" so that the title doesn't need to changed if the company changes their name again. I did not add the 1987-2018 because it was not verified by the source. In 2015, private equity firm Hellman & Friedman became the majority owner of Edelman Financial Services is about the company and I do not think it is part of his biography. Industry recognition[edit]

  • Updating and adding to text from lead:
Edelman was ranked the #1 Independent Financial Advisor in the United States by Barron’s in 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2018.[11][12] For 2018, Edelman was ranked #1.[12]
to
In July 2001, Edelman's book Ordinary People, Extraordinary Wealth appeared at #1 in the paperback "Advice, How-to and Miscellaneous" category of the New York Times Best Seller list.[20] Edelman was ranked the #1 Independent Financial Advisor in the United States by Barron’s in 2009, 2010, and 2012.[11] In 2016, Forbes ranked Edelman among the top 10 wealth advisors in America.[21][22] In 2019, Barron's added Edelman to its Financial Advisors Hall of Fame.[23] Also in 2019, InvestmentNews named Edelman to its list of "20 people who helped shape the financial planning industry"[24] and Investopedia named Edelman one of its top 100 financial advisors.[25] The editors of Talkers Magazine ranked Edelman #69 in its 2020 "Heavy Hundred" list of the most important radio talk show hosts in America.[26][27]
The 2018 ref – archived here – is a ranking for Edelman Financial Services, not Edelman personally. I added the 2016 Forbes ranking along with a ref on the methodology of how that ranking worked, the 2019 InvestmentNews and Investopedia rankings, and the Talkers Magazine acknowledgment.

Partly done The Barrons article only verified that he reached the top spot in 2012, so I took out the other years. I did not add Edelman's Top 10 Forbes rating as I did not think it was notable. Unfortunately, I cannot access the Barrons article for the Hall of Fame. If you want, you can email me a pdf of the article. The remaining three sentences are not notable recognitions as Edelman does not obtain the "top spot" in any of these recognitions or is listed among others equally. Z1720 (talk) 02:33, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Z1720: Hi! Sorry for the delay, but I've just shared the PDF for that Barron's source over email if you're able to take a look.
One other thing: In my original requests I cited a source indicating that Edelman Financial Services was founded in 1987. Apparently that is inaccurate; the correct year of founding is 1986, per Edelman's SEC filings[28] and RIA Intel.[29] Would it be possible to update that?
Thanks again for your time. I appreciate your help. Mary Gaulke (talk) 23:04, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi MaryGaulke I am not fulfilling edit requests at this time. I suggest that you add a new request below, and mention that you can email the pdf of the source if the new reviewer needs it. Sorry for the inconvenience. Z1720 (talk) 19:43, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I'll do that. Mary Gaulke (talk) 22:27, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life[edit]

Adding "Personal life" as a new section after "Edelman Financial Engines":

Done Edelman grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.[2] He majored in communications at Rowan University (then Glassboro State College), where he met his wife Jean.[3] He began his career as a reporter for McKnight Publications from 1980 to 1986.[7]
Jean and Ric Edelman founded the Edelman Nursing Career Development Center in partnership with Inova Health System in 2001, and donated $1 million to the program in 2008.[30] The Edelmans donated $1 million to Rowan University towards the Edelman Planetarium on campus in 2002.[31] In October 2016, the Edelmans donated $25 million to the Edelman Fossil Park at Rowan University.[32][31] Rowan university also named Edelman a "Distinguished Lecturer".[32] The Edelmans donated another $10 million to Rowan University's endowment in 2019, earmarked for tuition aid for students.[3] Rowan University renamed its creative arts school the Ric Edelman College of Communications & Creative Arts in February 2020.[33][34]
Partly done The notable information, like co-founding Inova and the naming of the fine arts building, were already in the article. I added info about the distinguished lecturer but the rest of the information is not notable. Z1720 (talk) 02:46, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done In January 2020, Ric and Jean Edelman pledged $1 million towards the production of a documentary about Alzheimer's disease research.[35] During the early stages of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, the couple made a donation to cover the cost of flying N95 masks to New Jersey to be distributed to area hospitals.[36]
minus Removed I removed these sections from the article because donating money is not notable as many people donate money to various causes. Instead, being instrumental in the group's activities allows for its notability. For example, Edelman's founding of Inova is notable because he co-created it.  Done Delete unnecessary introductory sentence: Edelman has written several personal finance books: (Consider updating section title to "Books authored" instead.)

Done Update The Truth About Money with Ric Edelman|The Truth About Money (2010) to The Truth About Money with Ric Edelman (1997) and move to the beginning of the list accordingly.

Not done Add after What You Need to Do Now (2001): , a financial planning book written in response to the events of September 11, 2001[37].

Too promotional. This information, if notable, should be in the body of the article as prose. Z1720 (talk) 02:53, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

 Done Add:

  • The New Rules of Money (2010)
  • The Squirrel Manifesto (2018), co-written with wife Jean Edelman[38]

I added the Infobox with appropriate modifications to comply with Wikipedia style. Thanks @Mary Gaulke for the COI disclosures and the sourced and formatted edits. I’ll wait to incorporate some of the other suggested edits, until other editors have weighed in also. Go4thProsper (talk) 03:09, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think these make sense. They aren't overly puffy and update the page to be more relevant post the EFE merger. I support inclusion. Squatch347 (talk) 14:53, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Go4thProsper and Squatch347: Hi both! Thank you so much for your feedback/help. At this stage, would it be OK to integrate the remaining changes and close this request, or would you like more folks to weigh in? Thanks again. Mary Gaulke (talk) 15:53, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I added a personal life section and some of the suggested edits. I did not include some that seem to stray into the Puffery category. I won’t object if other editors disagree, but I won’t be adding more to the article myself. Go4thProsper (talk) 18:03, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I marked the relevant pieces of my original request done. I really think there are several more beneficial changes to be made, just in terms of correcting inaccuracies and adding current information. I'll go ahead and leave the request open until Squatch347 or someone else has a chance to take a look. Mary Gaulke (talk) 20:14, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think the rest of the changes look fine and should be incorporated (sorry I don't have the bandwidth). If I were to prioritize those changes, I would say the section referencing Edelman Financial would be first since that firm doesn't exist anymore. Second Bibliography, those dates are better than what is in there now. Finally, the recognition part. I'm ok with all those additions, though the last two make it, perhaps, a bit close to puffery. Squatch347 (talk) 18:19, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Would you be comfortable with {{request edit/proceed}} and me making the edits? Also happy to revise the recognition section as needed. Mary Gaulke (talk) 22:05, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MaryGaulke: I see this request is still open but there hasn't been a response for two months. Are there any outstanding requests or proposed changes? If so, can you outline them below? Thanks. Z1720 (talk) 03:09, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Z1720: To be clear, every bullet that isn't marked {{done}} above is still outstanding. Happy to copy those items below if it's helpful. Thank you! Mary Gaulke (talk) 03:51, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @MaryGaulke: I think I understand what still needs to be added. In the interest of fairness, I will complete older requests before starting this one although I completely support other editors continuing this request if I don't get to it first. Let me know if you have any questions. Z1720 (talk) 16:12, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I took care of a few quick ones. Thanks for your patience, MaryGaulke. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 17:26, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MaryGaulke: I finished the first section. I gave reasonings for my assessments under each proposal. Z1720 (talk) 20:13, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @MaryGaulke:, I have completed the request. If you have any responses, questions or concerns, please post them below. Thanks BlackcurrantTea, Go4thProsper and Squatch347 for helping to complete this request. Z1720 (talk) 02:53, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

two quick COI edit requests[edit]

Hi! Carrying over from the discussion in "Industry Recognition" above, two quick edit requests:

  • Adding to the "Recognition" section of this article:
In 2019, Barron's added Edelman to its Financial Advisors Hall of Fame.[1]
(The article is paywalled, but I'm happy to share a PDF over email.)
  • In my original requests I cited a source indicating that Edelman Financial Services was founded in 1987. Apparently that is inaccurate; the correct year of founding is 1986, per Edelman's SEC filings[2] and RIA Intel.[3] Would it be possible to update that?

Thanks for your time! Mary Gaulke (talk) 22:40, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MaryGaulke:, I've done that date change, but not the "Recognition" one. Not because I can't see the article, but because I don't know enough about the publication to judge the notability of the recognition in what I'm assuming is an industry publication that EFE may advertise in, and I'm (perhaps overly) cautious about these "Recognition" sections in BLP's. If you're sure it is notable enough, please just redo that part of the Edit Request again below and another editor will consider it for you.
Cheers, AntiVan (talk) 01:06, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi AntiVan, I believe Barron's is a pretty respectable source within the industry. The financial advisor ranking is done independently of those ranked. If I recall correctly, it is conducted by interviews with customers. I know that financial services firms cannot submit an application (in fact I think to do so would be an SEC and FINRA violation). I'll look for their methodology and post if I can find it. Squatch347 (talk) 13:51, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Mary Gaulke, I don't have an account, but I'm assuming you do. Can you give us the relevant text from this methodology page? [1]
Squatch347 (talk) 13:59, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely:
Advisors who wish to be ranked fill out a 102-question survey about their practice. We verify that data with the advisors' firms and with regulatory databases and then we apply our rankings formula to the data to generate a ranking. The formula features three major categories of calculations: (1) Assets (2) Revenue (3) Quality of practice. In each of those categories we do multiple subcalculations.
For instance, we take into account not just the amount of assets an advisor manages, but also the type of assets—are they private-wealth assets or institutional? If they're institutional, are they for a foundation or an endowment, or are they corporate assets? We measure the growth of advisors' practices and their client retention. We also consider a wide range of qualitative factors, including the advisors' experience, their advanced degrees and industry designations, the size, shape, and diversity of their teams, their charitable and philanthropic work and, of course, their compliance records.
Also happy to share the original PDF if helpful. Thank you! Mary Gaulke (talk) 14:41, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I was off on the application a bit. I think though it meets criteria for addition. I'll wait to hear back from AntiVan to make sure we are in agreement first. 14:59, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Squatch347 and AntiVan: Hi! Checking in on this. Mary Gaulke (talk) 21:11, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Added. Squatch347 (talk) 12:13, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
