This book gives the the facts that Ridley Creek is a tributary to the Delaware River and the two counties (Chester and Delaware). Then it says the source is at 600 feet (183 meters) near Frzer in Chester Co. (near here means more than 1 mile away). The mouth is at 0 feet at (within 1 mile or less) Eddystone, Delaware Co. On page 406 it gives the mouth coordinates as 39 51 39 N 75 18 51 W. The course is southeast, the drainage basin area is 37.9 square miles (98.2 sq km), the length is 23.4 miles (37.7 km). The Meander ratio is 1.18, the relief ratio is 25.6, the channel slope is 21.5 feet/mile (6.6 m/km) (this is slope between 10 and 85% of the total length). For physiography, the headwaters are in the Piedmont Upland section and the mouth is in the Coastal Plain province; the rocks are sand and gravel, granite gneiss, and mica schist; the drainage pattern is dendritic and the channel pattern is regular. The main channel runs through moderate to low hills in a narrow steep sided valley with steep to moderate slopes. Mean annual precipitation is 42 to 44 inches (1067 to 1118 mm).

This includes streams with drainage basins greater than 25 square miles. On page 7 it says "When the stream is formed by the junction of two tributaries, the tributary with the larger drainage area will be considered the source." The Branches are not in this (too small), but the Northeast Branch is bigger.

This has watershed areas and river miles for all named streams in Pennsylvania. It gives the drainage basin area of Ridley Creek as 37.90 sq mi (agrees exactly) and gives its river mile as 83.30 miles (??). It also gives the following for the branches:

East Branch Ridley Creek, 21.95 river miles, 0.49 sq mi drainage basin, mouth at 40 01 03 N, 75 32 22 W.

Northeast Branch Ridley Creek, 21.95 river miles, 0.58 sq mi drainage basin, mouth at 40 01 03 N, 75 32 22 W.

So they are both 21.95 miles from the mouth of Ridley Creek, which is a figure that could be used in the article.

USGS GNIS

This also has coordinates of mouth and source for each and (unusually) rough lengths and a bit of history and etymology.

Ridley Creek is "29 km (18 mi) long" here (also gives some etymology as well as coordinates and elevations for the source and mouth).

The East Branch is "1.1 km (0.7 mi) long" according to its GNIS page

The Northeast Branch is "1.6 km (1 mi) long" according to its GNIS page.

Summary

If you take the 2001 Gazetteer distance (21.95 miles) and add it to the GNIS length of the Northeast Branch (1 mile) you get essentially 23 miles long, which is a decent match to the print Gazetteer value of 23.4 miles.

If I were writing this, I would use the 23.4 mile length for the creek including the NE Branch, and the 21.95 mile length from the source to the mouth. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 02:47, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Just to repeat, since the USGS GNIS defines the source as the confluence of the two branches, I would use the 21.95 mile length in the lead. I would mention as well that the PA Gazetteer of Streams II gives the 23.4 mile length when the longest branch (NE) is included. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 14:27, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
