Place of death[edit]

I assume it was London, but the article does not say so. Do we know where he died? JackofOz 10:54, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • consults Borland biogaphy* Yes, he died at his London home of heart failure. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 14:01, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Belated thanks. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 11:29, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Parentage etc[edit]

If Ross was the Grandson of Robert Baldwin on his mothers side, and if Robert Baldwin only had two daughters, Elizabeth and Maria, then why does this article say that the name of Ross's mother was Bredina Peet or whatever? I mean, is should be Elizabeth, right? Who married John Ross?

The article accurately states that his mother was Augusta Elizabeth Ross - I assumed the article has since been changed since your comment. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 14:01, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Open homosexuality contributed to early death?[edit]

No evidence of this is presented in the article - is it true? 193.111.24.180 (talk) 14:04, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Ed[reply]

His homosexuality was not what led to it, but the harrassment of Lord Alfred Douglas. It's all outlined in the concluding chapters of Jonathan Fryer's book - basically Robbie had always been kinda sickly but Bosie pushed his stress levels over the edge. To state that him being open about his homosexuality caused his death, without stating what he died of, is ludicrous. If he was killed because it was found out he was homosexual, then the statement could be true. However, assigning what was probably a natural causes death to being open about his orientation is misrepresenting the truth. Nietzsche 2 (talk) 19:11, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Why? Because you say it's so? You're saying that it wasn't because of the nature of his lifestyle that lead to his death but (obviously) because of others. You're just stating what you prefer to be the case, that's not conclusive. He was also a pederast. Maybe it was guilt because of his actions. But let me guess, it couldn't be that way because you couldn't fathom it to be so. JorgeK. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.26.252.69 (talk) 02:44, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Catholic faith?[edit]

Nothing in this article mentions Ross's Catholic faith. According to Joseph Pearce's biography of Oscar Wilde (The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde, HarperCollins, 2000), Ross was received into the Catholic Church in 1894 (p229). He also took his faith very seriously. When Wilde was released from prison, he asked Ross to organize his own reception into the Church. Ross later wrote: 'When Oscar came out of prison he had the idea of becoming a Catholic, and he consulted me about it, for you know I am a Catholic. I did not believe in his sincerity and told him if he really meant it, to go to a priest, and I discouraged him from anything hasty in the matter... I would willingly have helped him if I thought him in earnest, but I did not fancy religion being made ridiculous by him.' (p267-8).

I'm not a Catholic, but it seems that it was a central part of Ross's life. It should be mentioned. --118.210.189.229 (talk) 09:56, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Place of Birth[edit]

I would like to point out that despite the fact that Ross was born in France and was raised in Europe this article refers to him as a Canadian, which, due to his familial connections, is perhaps understandable. But was Ross a Canadian? Was he a Canadian citizen? I'm not sure how citizenship status works, but if one his parents were Canadians then legally, perhaps, he also was a Canadian citizen. However, he was born in France and what evidence is there for him identifying himself as a Canadian? It seems a bit innacurate to call him a Canadian. Agree? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.165.158.59 (talk) 22:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pre 1947, you only had to be a British subject that lived in Canada for 3 years to get Canadian citizenship. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.242.8.132 (talk) 06:52, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cambridge section[edit]

There are some grammatical errors in this section ("go to university," "left university," etc.); and it seems more references should be added to back assertions made (RE: "probably," "perhaps," etc.). Londonjackbooks (talk) 04:23, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oscar Wilde-Exile and Death[edit]

This section implies that Ross went abroad after the trail of Wilde but returned (to England?) to visit Wilde. However this can't be correct as Wilde himself went abroad (France) after being released from prison and died in France. Ross visited Wilde in France and was with him at the time of his death in Paris in 1900. See: Oscar Wilde
