No bodies of water

I was flipping through this article and noticed the "there are no bodies of water in MD, but I atleast know of one (Lake Needwood), so for now I've changed it to "no major bodies of water. I'm not sure what the context of the original statement was exactly but I know that as it was it was false.[[subst:unsigned|138.88.137.25}}

Needwood,(and Lake Frank) are outside of the City Limits. See the map near the middle of the article.

Edit: Its not that Maryland does not have any bodies of water, it does not have any NATURAL bodies of water. All its lakes are man-made. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.73.128.58 (talk) 06:15, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Fourth largest city in Maryland?

According to both the Rockville and the Frederick articles, they are both the fourth most populous cities in the state of Maryland. Which is larger? And which census updates are used to determine these? Alex 05:43, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

The numbers have recently changed, based on census figures released on June 30th of this year. Up until that point, Frederick was the third most populous city (behind Baltimore and Gaithersburg), but the new report has had it slip behind Rockville. The difference, however, is pretty insignificant: according to the 2004 data available on the U.S. Census Bureau website, Rockville's total residency is 57,100, compared to Frederick's 57,009 (data available here, in Excel spreadsheet format). I'll update the page and add a reference to reflect this. – Seancdaug 14:25, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
To further complicate matters, the Rockville web site claims that the city is the fifth largest based on 2003 figures. The problem is that I can't find detailed demographics on the newer numbers (families, households, racial, gender, etc.), and it feels wrong to present numbers based on two different figures. Thoughts, anyone? – Seancdaug 14:41, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Amtrak

Is this section really necessary? Especially the bit about price, that isn't even filled in. It seems like it would be liable to change too rapidly to really be appropriate. The schedule is available at http://www.amtrak.com/timetable/oct06/P29.pdf if anybody cares enough to edit it in, but I don't think it's useful. People can go to the primary source so easily for things like that. ejstheman 06:03, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Agreed. A link to the info is enough nadav 07:03, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Cumberland, MD Transit

I deleted the following as it was specific to Cumberland, MD, about 175 miles away. Maybe it got pasted in along with information about commuter rail? Anyway, none of it had anything to do with Rockville, MD:

=== Within the City ===
The primary public transportation in the City of Cumberland is bus service provided by Allegany County Transit. This service is fairly extensive, consisting of five scheduled routes that reach most areas of the City and providing access to most public facilities. The bus depot is located in the South End to the west of Virginia Avenue on Lafayette Avenue. The Allegany County Transit Authority also serves LaVale, Frostburg, Lonaconing, Mt. Savage, and Cresaptown.

Also:

=== Highways ===
Cumberland's roadway system consists of a series of interconnected grids defined by natural and man-made barriers including steep slopes, the Potomac River, Wills Creek, rail lines, and I-68. Originally developed for a larger population than currently lives in Cumberland, the overall system is generally adequate to accommodate existing levels of traffic. Major highway arteries serving the Cumberland area include:

None of these roads runs through, or, particularly close to Rockville.Carlaclaws 01:26, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, it appears I've messed up somehow; I got a friendly advisor regarding the content of my post, but I haven't been able to identify the violation. Can you please help me out? Should I revert my changes? While I appreciate the civil tone of Wikipedia, it would be helpful if someone could point out my mistake(s). Thanks much. Carlaclaws 01:41, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Sister City

The article states that Schleswig-Holstein is one of the city's sister cities. However, Schleswig-Holstein is a state in Germany. I am not familiar with the true arrangement; however, a sister city cannot be a state. Please correct this. 71.176.143.119 03:01, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

McClellan at the Beall-Dawson House

Boy, is my face red. I'm glad that I "discussed" it instead of changing the page. Apparently, McClellan did spend the night of September 7, 1862 at the Beall/Dawson House, and wrote home to his wife the next day that Miss Beall was "an old maid of strong Union sentiment." NCGUB Headquarters

I would like to suggest that the fact that the headquarters of the exile government of Burma (Myanmar) – the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB) – is located in Rockville, Maryland, be placed in this article. Saphius 09:22, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Selective Demographics

The demographics data are not well presented, using old data, and only showing part of that. Here are the current data for schools. Quoting figures for schools should be trivial. But by selectively presenting part of the data, it gives an inaccurate picture. The data for high schools is presented as though it represents the demographics of a particular area (but high schools, unlike say, elementary schools, have wide feeder areas which blur things a bit). Here's a quick read of the current data for elementary schools having more than 20% Asian:

20.2 Fox Chapel (Germantown)
20.4 Tyler (Silver Spring)
20.6 Garrett Park
21.0 Westover (Silver Spring)
22.0 Thurgood Marshall (Gaithersburg)
21.7 Fields Road (Gaithersburg)
22.6 Beverly Farms (Potomac)
23.1 Luxmanor
23.3 McNair (Germantown)
23.3 Candlewood
23.5 Great Seneca Creek (Germantown)
24.8 Ride (Germantown)
26.1 College Gardens
26.1 Potomac (Potomac)
26.9 Park
27.2 Clarksburg
27.5 Cold Spring (Potomac)
27.7 Little Bennett (Clarksburg)
30.2 Wayside (Potomac)
31.9 Fallsmead
33.3 Diamond (Gaithersburg)
33.7 DuFief (Gaithersburg)
34.6 Farmland
35.5 Travilah (North Potomac)
40.1 Lackwood
40.4 Matsunga (Germantown)
47.0 Stone Mill (North Potomac)

As illustrated here, several locations have large Asian populations. Rockville accounts for a third of the list. Tedickey (talk) 00:27, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Incongruent Comparison of Census Data

Deleted:

"Due to the obscure definition as well as the ambiguous and complex nature in the Chinese versus Taiwanese identity issue, the percentage of North Potomac with Chinese ancestry may be higher since 27.59% was reported to have Asian ancestry according to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau."

This line states that "Chinese ancestry" may be higher because "Asian ancestry" in the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau was higher. Additionally, if the "Chinese versus Taiwanese identity issue" is "ambiguous and complex," why should the numbers be questioned and bunched together, especially when participants of the Census do not wish to be identified as such? The cited reference does not touch upon nationalities, and "Asian" includes many other nationalities numerous in the area. The information directly preceding the line suffices to convey this information.Sixthfore (talk) 18:46, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Relative notability

The "Notable" section probably shouldn't be a list of everything that is linked to this topic. Googling on "Dog Fashion Disco" rockville gives 497 hits; the others are in the tens of thousands. Tedickey (talk) 12:51, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

The 'notable' section is just a random list, and resembles a 'trivia' section. Trivia sections in articles are discouraged, per WP:TRIVIA. For a listing of suggested sections to include in articles, see WP:USCITY. Dr. Cash (talk) 18:09, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Confusing Sentence

The oldest standing structure in Rockville is at 5 North Adams Street. The lot was purchased in 1972 as lot 76 and the house constructed. There were additions made in 1860 and 1880. The most recent renovation was in 1974. The old section of the current house is closest to the street. It is used as an office now.[2]:21

The "purchase" date is after the additions date.

Could someone please correct this?

History section issues

The history section contains some relevant content, though none of it is sourced. I have asked the users who provided this material (Seancdaug and BRG) what their sources were, though I haven't received a reply from Seancdaug (I asked him nearly a month ago) and BRG seems to have retired from Wikipedia.

The history section is disorganized and needs some copyediting. For instance, the sentence "F. Scott Fitzgerald was interred into Rockville Union Cemetery after his death in 1940" is written between the paragraphs about the METRO development and the Cold War. A paragraph or sentence mentioning the Urban Renewal that occurred in the central business district during the 1960s would be a positive addition as the event led to the destruction of many historic buildings in the downtown area, the construction of the Rockville Mall and other government buildings, and in the future redevelopment of the area during the 2000s (Rockville Town Center).

On a final note, more pictures would be good. I am in contact with Peerless Rockville, a local historic preservation group who have large collections of picture of the old downtown and Rockville Mall. I'm also capable of taking pictures since I live in the area.

Thanks,

(Wikipedian1234 (talk) 14:59, 31 March 2010 (UTC))

I know I'm very late responding to you message, Wikipedian1234, but this is actually the first time I've logged into Wikipedia in over a year. Most of the information I entered for the history section is sourced from Eileen McGuckian's Rockville: Portrait of a City (mentioned in the references section), but it's been so long since I added it that I can't remember precisely which information is mine, and which was added before of after I contributed. As an aside, though I'm no longer living in the Rockville area, when I was a resident, I volunteered briefly at Peerless Rockville (where I met Ms. McGuckian and was introduced to her work), and I'm glad to hear that they're still around and still doing their good work. – Sean Daugherty (talk) 16:19, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Peter Chang's new restaurant

The recent edit had nothing to do with demographics, but was written to promote a restaurant (one of many). TEDickey (talk) 19:53, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Section Pictures

Hello, it looks like the pictures at each section don't necessarily reflect the content of the section (for example, the early history section on native american movements has a photo of a modern building). Any thoughts on this? In a little while, I may go ahead and see how changes look.--Semitones (talk) 17:42, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Major Improvements still needed to this article

I am a long time observer of Wikipedia, but a new editor. I have reviewed the Rockville article for some time and find it to be lacking in quality and content. I have put in info about historical population, info about the library, famous people, weather, historical places, but it still needs a lot of work. SeanSmith81 (talk) 13:45, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

As you've been told twice now, your addition of notable people and images are out of policy. Additionally, your rewrite of the lede is inappropriate. There is never a time when it is appropriate to just replace info you've just added when someone else reverts it. That is called edit warring and it generally leads to your editing privilege being suspended. I'm going to revert your changes again. I have no objection to the weather data or the historic census data. The rest I do. It is up to you to gain consensus for the other changes. Until you have that, they stay out. John from Idegon (talk) 14:09, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
Are you an Administrator? If not then what authority do you have to revert my high quality edits? You are in fact the one edit warring SeanSmith81 (talk) 14:11, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

John/etc, was being polite - something that you might take notes from. Your changes are not an improvement, and attacking other editors is not the way to go about getting consensus. TEDickey (talk) 15:01, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

I am new to editing and I am learning the ropes (so please bare with me). If it appear that I was attacking another editor then I apologize. I was just trying to correct what I believe to be an article of low quality (and despite my best attempts to improve the Rockville, Maryland article it still needs significant improvements to meet basic standards). SeanSmith81 (talk) 15:40, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
A few comments/suggestions:
  • There is no need for a decorative table in the notable people section.
  • Much of the education and transportation section remains unsourced, and the transportation section reads like a travel guide.
  • SeanSmith81 moved several photos, then resized them to 180px and left-justified them, which sandwiched the text between the images and the infobox.
  • The sections should be re-ordered and re-named per WP:USCITIES.
  • The detailed image captions need to be sourced.
  • The recently-added notable people have no source to support ever having lived in Rockville (such at George Starke). Magnolia677 (talk) 17:10, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
The main issue (particularly in the lede) with the edits is that they're generally promotional. The other issues are stylistic. Either way, there are guidelines TEDickey (talk) 17:36, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
Would anyone object to adding the population history table? I've seen that on plenty of pages of many populations with no controversy. No need to throw the baby out with the alleged bathwater. Plandu (talk) 23:02, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
Please note that John from Idegon (talk) has broken the 3 revert rule and told me to report them or buzz off when I posted a notice in their talk page. SeanSmith81 did good in asking questions. It is not rude to ask questions and pointing out issues. Thinker78 (talk) 00:03, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Note that this here edit, discussing an editor, not an edit, was added AFTER the Wikipedia user Thinker78 left a 3rr notice on my talk page, and this here edit represents his sole contribution to either the article or this talk page. There is nothing whatsoever constructive about the above edit. John from Idegon (talk) 01:28, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
I was talking about the lede, and you commented as though you ignored it. The aspect about emphasizing the size of the metropolitan area combined with the editor's talkpage comments put it well into the promotional range. TEDickey (talk) 00:34, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
As I told the OP multiple times, I have no objection to the climate stuff. I initially told him I had no objection to the historic census data either, but Magnolia677 pointed out his citation doesn't lead to any data. All that I need there is ref improvement. The additions to notable people are largely inappropriate, being either not notable by our definition or lacking any cited info in their bio articles tying them to the community. Any that have a bio article with cited info in it tying them to this community are fine. I object to the graphics changed in the notable people section. Using a chart is generally frowned on due to difficulty editing them; images of individual notables are problematic on several levels, including copyright, off-topic, and deciding who to picture. I agree with Tedickey that the changes to the lede are not constructive at all. Generally a lede should remain stable. Adding a population estimate means it will need to be updated annually rather than every 10 years. It should contain basic locating info and summarize the high points of the article. A population estimate is not a high point. Most of the other miscellaneous changes were trivial in nature. I await the OP making arguments to support his position, something he has not done (except to tell me I have no right to remove his edits, which is of course nonsense). SeanSmith81, if you want to get any of your changes in, you'll need to participate here. John from Idegon (talk) 01:20, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
John from Idegon you have been in Wikipedia for a while so you should know that expecting a response from an editor in less than 24 hours is not very reasonable really. In addition, SeanSmith81 doesn't need to participate here necessarily if they want the changes in, as the decision would be by consensus whether or not they is here, although their participation and explaining their rationale does help. --Thinker78 (talk) 02:16, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Outdated Pictures of Rockville

These pictures are old and are not very good. I'm going to work on taking new ones, and uploading them to Wikimedia Commons SeanSmith81 (talk) 09:20, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Nice that you are going to add pics to Commons, but what old pics are you talking about? --Thinker78 (talk) 05:09, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
I noticed a picture of the Rockville Skyline was from 2001 should be updated. I might also take a few pictures of the local college, and both metro stations. Any other requests? SeanSmith81 (talk) 09:40, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
It would be great if you take a skyline pic from the same angle. I don't know why the garage entrance is in the gallery, a much better picture would be the Old Courthouse. Probably a picture showing a tree-lined street with Victorian houses would be good too, one of Rockville Pike outside downtown, one of the street in front of the Regal cinema, and one of the Rockville metro station showing the bus shelters and the entrance going to the stairs. Although I don't know if all would fit in the article. --Thinker78 (talk) 05:05, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
