Single track[edit]

How much of the line is single track, and how much double? Jim.henderson 04:51, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is a single track from Farmingdale Station to Deer Park Station. From Deer Park to Central Islip, there are two tracks, and from Central Islip to Ronkonkoma, there is one track. East of Ronkonkoma, it's just one track all the way to Greenport.
The information in the article about the single track from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma is false, I've seen the track configuration myself. Is there a source that might confirm this?

Info corrected: Deer Park-Brentwood is double-tracked. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 22:36, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tone tag[edit]

From the headline-like section headers to the extensive use of soundbite quotes, this article reads like a recent newspaper article, not an encylopedia article. It also has paltry coverage for anything other that the Greenport service issues (which are given undue weight), completely ignoring anything of the line/service's history. The logical counter-arguement to that is the line's history is covered at the Main Line article. To which I must wonder, why is this a separate article and not just a section of the Main Line article?oknazevad (talk) 20:12, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of that was due to copy-pasting from news articles in the Greenport controversy section. I've removed the tone tag and marked it as a copyvio. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 22:36, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Greenport controversy will be rewritten less like a new article and more like wikipedia article.Oanabay04 (talk) 15:30, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Transfer at Ronkonkoma[edit]

All current schedules list transfers at Ronkonkoma for all passengers travelling through Ronkonkoma. see http://www.mta.info/lirr/Timetable/Station/RonkonkomaKO4.pdf. I now see one exception -- one train from Deer Park to Riverhead --JimWae (talk) 09:59, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think I misread the schedule there. My main reason for the edit was to remove the part about the Central Branch being colored as part of the Ronkonkoma Branch on maps. On the paper maps it's printed in grey, with the gray actually extending to the junction with the Port Jefferson Branch; the Ronkonkoma Branch purple only starts where the Central Branch diverges. If you want to tweak the part about east-of-Ronkonkoma passengers needing to transfer, feel free. oknazevad (talk) 16:32, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think any paper map that does not include Bethpage on the Ronkonkoma Branch must have some kind of misprint.(see http://www.mta.info/lirr/Timetable/Station/RonkonkomaKO1.pdf) 1> All trains that travel over the Central Branch use the Ronkonkoma Branch track between Hicksville and Bethpage Junction. The Central Branch branches off from the Ronkonkoma Branch (not simply from the Main Line). While I agree it is a bit strange that the Central Branch is colored purple (and has been for years) on-line maps, that does supports giving that Branch treatment in this article, even if there are "somewhat contrary" (NB: not contradictory) indications elsewhere. Could you direct me to one of these paper maps? 2> SOME Ronkonkoma Branch (full branch) schedules go only as far as Ronkonkoma.(just yesterday this was true of http://www.mta.info/lirr/Timetable/Branch/RonkonkomaBranch.pdf) Stations further east are printed on completely separate schedules. This indicates the LIRR treats the "Greenport Branch" as an "unofficial" separate branch. --JimWae (talk) 21:25, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The paper map I refer to is the one on the back of The Map, the NYC Subway map. It serves as the master map for all MTA rail; the map on the back includes both LIRR and Metro-North.
The problem with your analysis is the Ronkonkoma Branch is the Main Line. "Ronkonkoma Branch" is just the name of the service, the physical line remains the Main Line per the employee timetable. Since the scope of this article is, therefore, the service to, and east of, Ronkonkoma, thats' why we don't need to mention the Central Branch; it's impossible for a train to use the Central Branch to get to Ronkonkoma. As for Bethpage, the grey line at the point indicates the station is served by trains from multiple branches; it's the same grey used for the Atlantic Branch and the rest of the City Terminal Zone.oknazevad (talk) 20:42, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-electrification from Wyandanch, New York article[edit]

I swiped some text from an earlier version of the Wyandanch, New York article and hid it in the Wyandanch (LIRR station) article. Much of the text mentions plans from the mid-1980's to eliminate Wyandanch and Pinelawn (LIRR station), as part of the electrification between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma. While I scale back the text in the Wyandanch station article, the rest of it might be good for here. ----DanTD (talk) 01:25, 1 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Template available[edit]

I've been working on a new template for the line. Right now, I'm just looking for the right terminus for Thompson's Siding (LIRR station) besides a right arrow, and I'm debating whether I should add bridges over the Carmans River or not. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 23:02, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Missing history from before electrification[edit]

This page is missing some history about the line's creation, operations and plans for expansion from before electrification. It seems like there is alot of history about the mainline portion on the Main Line (Long Island Rail Road) page, but nothing about the Hicksville-Ronkonkoma portion is present from before electrification on either page.
