Outline of proposed changes (undergraduate student editor)[edit]

Hi! I'm Anna, a student at New College of Florida. I will be working on this article as a part of an assignment for a course called "Art Since 1945." We were to select an active contemporary artist, research them, and contribute to their Wiki article. Below is what I think of the article as it stands now, and what I plan to contribute to the article:

In Rose B. Simpson’s existing Wikipedia article, there is enough information to get an idea of who she is and where her work has been or can be seen (current and past exhibitions). There are eight existing sections (each is short): Biography, education, artwork, exhibitions, collections, awards, personal life, and musical career.

Although the article extensively covers where her work has been shown, I believe it would be beneficial to have more information about the artwork itself. The section of the article titled “Artwork” is only one sentence, which is just not enough for an artist’s Wikipedia page! The existing sentence reads, “Simpson is a mixed-media artist, whose work artwork investigates the complex issues of past, present and future aspects of humanity's tenuous survival in our current ecological condition.” While this an adequate summary sentence, I think the article will benefit from having more information about her subject matter, the goals she tries to accomplish with her work, and a sentence or two about her performance art, which she calls “transformances.” I would also like to add a bit about her sculpting techniques, since she developed a unique was of assembling clay called “slap-slab.” This is her signature style, so it would be important to include it in the artwork section.

I would also like to add a section titled, “Selected works,” inspired by a section I saw on another artist’s Wikipedia. There, I would include two artworks that are representative of her overall work with short descriptions. I thought it was a good way to highlight a few works to encourage the reader to explore more of her work. For the artworks, I will probably select Maria (2014) and Counterculture (2022) since I have researched the most information about these works to create a substantive description.

Let me know if you have any comments or concerns. Thank you! Annalazzara2112 (talk) 18:15, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Annalazzara2112, thank you for providing such a detailed message about your proposed improvements. I don't have any concerns; just make sure everything is well sourced. I did notice, however on your bibliography link (which I just briefly skimmed, but did not read in depth) you mention that Rose grew up in Espanola. I've been familiar with her work for over a decade, and I always was under the impression she grew up in Santa Clara Pueblo. They two settlements are close but are very different in character and culture. That might be worth double checking. I don't have a lot of time right now due to some personal matters I need to devote the majority of my time to, but I encourage you to go ahead and work on adding your proposed changes, and if any are challenged, start a discussion here on the talk page. Best of luck with this project. Netherzone (talk) 20:43, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Netherzone! Thanks for your response. Yes, she did grow up in Santa Clara Pueblo. I found in my research she spent some time in Espanola, but was not born/raised there. I will make sure this distinction is made in my additions. Thank you! Annalazzara2112 (talk) 17:08, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Annalazzara, thanks for your response! I've always loved her "Maria" piece [1], it's in honor of Maria Martinez who was known for her Black-on-black ware pottery. There is nice video of Rose talking about the work at that link. (She is shown in one segment with her mom, Roxanne Swentzell by her side in part of video. I'm wondering if it might be possible for us to take a screen shot from the video (either of her work, or the of her with Roxanne) to use as a fair-use image per WP criteria for fair use of copy-righted works. Let me know if that is of interest to you when you find a moment. Netherzone (talk) 17:20, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Netherzone! I would love to be able to add some photos, but the fair use rules are a bit daunting. I wasn't sure how to go about finding available images. How do I know if that video is ok to use a screenshot from? Annalazzara2112 (talk) 17:47, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you mean, the fair use rules are indeed daunting. Usually though, with a work of art, if there is enough encyclopedic content about a specific work, then it's ok to include a fair-use image to illustrate what is written in the text. If you have the time to write something like a short paragraph about the Maria piece (or a different piece if you prefer), I will do the upload using a fair use template. I have been looking for a copyright free image on Flickr for a long time, and haven't yet come across one, so I think fair use is the way to go. Ping me if you decide to write something about a specific work and I'll proceed with the upload. Netherzone (talk) 18:00, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I already have a paragraph of text about Maria in my sandbox, as well as some text about her site specific sculpture: Counterculture. I plan to add these additions as well as the additions I have mentioned before very soon. I will ping you when everything is live! 2600:1006:B032:7744:BD3C:E4B3:475E:8E04 (talk) 18:20, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Netherzone, my additions have been published. Thanks for your support! Annalazzara2112 (talk) 22:21, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've added an image of Counterculture uploaded with a fair use license. Let's hope it sticks! Netherzone (talk) 23:57, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I appreciate your help! @Netherzone Annalazzara2112 (talk) 13:21, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
