Construction commenced on 9 June, 1964. It was the largest community centre in the southern hemisphere and was opened in 1965 at a then cost $15 million. Its main feature was a large Grace Bros. store. At 4.30pm on 13 June 1969, a huge fire broke out on the 4th floor of the Grace Bros section of Roselands. Fire brigades from all over Sydney attended the huge blaze which caused thousands of dollars worth of damage before it was brought under control. In 1977 an expansion proposal entailing re-zoning was put forward. There were a great many objections and it was December, 1978 before permission for the extensions was given. When these extensions were completed in 1981, Roselands celebrated its 16th birthday. In August, 1992 Roselands was officially "re-launched" following 18 months of re-furbishment. Like many American malls, is easily accessible by car and has large car parks. Local bus services were diverted into the shopping center at its opening, linking it to local railway lines, however its distance from a railway station has been a distinct disadvantage and it has been overtaken in size and prestige by many newer and larger malls in Sydney.

Demographic Data Added from 2001 Census[edit]

I added comprehensive data — from the 2001 census — relating to birthplace, home language and religion. I am planning to add this data to each suburb in Australia as I get round to it. Unfortunately, I cannot work out how to add references. The data I quoted for Roselands derived from [1] and I would be grateful if anyone more proficient than myself could add this reference to the article. Thanks. 193.61.176.48 00:23, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
