The result of the proposal was not moved. There's clear consensus to move the article, but not where to move this to. I suggest that, as on other similar RMs, an RfC on the use of diacriticals in article names be created to determine the outcome. - UtherSRG (talk) 22:00, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Move to Rudi Skacel. There are thousands of stories on Google News that give this subject as "Rudi Skacel" (no diacritic). See FIFA, BBC, or ESPN. I assume he wants an anglicized name.   • Just generally because per WP:UE if it's the common English usage to drop the diacritic we should do likewise, if it wasn't the most common I'd agree to keep it in to comply with the second part of that (use the Czech usage). But it does appear to be more common in English news sources and official team pages (it's difficult to be completely sure since google searches don't differentiate between accent and not) and he does use it without for his twitter account.   • Comment. I get 1,390 post-2005 Google News hits for "Rudi Skacel" (no diacritic), 3 for "Rudi Skácel," only one of which is in English -- and that one is actually for "Rudolf 'Rudi' Skácel".   • Support move to Rudi Skacel it's not a case of mix-and-match for this man. He is known in Czech as Rudolf Skácel. That is unquestioned. If the rationale for a move is that he is known as Rudi in the English media, surely it must follow that his surname is used without the diacritic. mix-and-match[edit]

Just a note on above. Technically, yes, the traditional Czech short form for Rudolf is Rudek (cs:Rudolf Bubik) and Rudi is short form for German Rudolph. But then it's recognised in CR, and sounds more cool.

  • Man of the derby, Rudi Skácel after all 8th August 2005 - Braveheart? Scottish, and right there in Edinburgh. That's "Rudi" Skacel. The second match, the second victory, the second goal - and now the man of the match.

Rudi Skácel → Rudolf Skácel – The footballer's real name is Rudolf Skácel, not Rudi. Skácel's nickname "Rudi" became widespread during his career tenure in Scotland (three seasons). He played for the Czech national team as Rudolf Skácel. He's back in the country now, playing the Second League for 1.FK Příbram, also as Rudolf Skácel. Czech footballers don't use nicknames as their official names, unlike e.g. Brazilians. Darwinek (talk) 20:51, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose In the English-speaking world (and in general) he's known as Rudi Skácel; on simple Ghits it's 112,000 for Rudi versus 33,600 for Rudolf, and on Google News there is only only one English-language hit in the first 30 returns (in which he is referred to as Rudi in the actual article and only as Rudolf in some automated commentary text). Rudolf Skácel would be appropriate on cs.wiki, but not here. Number 57 11:23, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Pretty much as above; he's primarily known in the English-speaking world for his stints playing in the UK, mainly at Hearts, and where he was only ever referred to as "Rudi <Skacel>". I don't even look on Rudi as a nickname as such, more just a shortening/ informalising (not sure that's actually a word, but I'm sure people will know what I mean!) of his proper name, like people whose formal first-name is "Robert" being referred to as "Bob", "Bobby" ,"Rob", etc. Put it like this, I've never heard of Rudolf Skácel ! :) ShugSty (talk) 11:32, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
