Synonymy?[edit]

I have to question the acceptance of this name and the synonymization of Ruellia brittoniana under it. R. brittoniana Leonard is a nomen novum for Cryphiacanthus angustifolius Nees, which could not be transferred to Ruellia because of the pre-existing name Ruellia angustifolia Sw. (This latter name should also prevent the recognition of several later homonyms, including R. angustifolia Sesse & Mocino which is accepted as the "correct" name in this article but I'm not certain it is correctly applied to the same taxon as R. brittoniana). To complicate matter, according to Tropicos the correct name for Ruellia brittoniana (and Cryphiacanthus angustifolius) should be R. coerulea Morong. I'm no authority on this group so I can't say for certain which name is correct, only that there seems to be some nomenclatural confusion in the article, perhaps due to the various homonyms. Could it be moved to being an article titled Ruellia? I found this: "Ruellia simplex, an older and overlooked name for Ruellia tweediana and Ruellia coerulea (Acanthaceae)" and that R. coerulea Morong is only another name for R. coerulea rather than the definitive name. Further it might make more sense to simply start a new article titled Ruellia brittoniana and transfer the information there. Any comments? Julia Rossi (talk) 12:26, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This has now been moved to Ruellia simplex based on discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants. First Light (talk) 16:27, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
