Hospital ship or not?[edit]

There seems to be conflicting information regarding whether or not the Ural Maru was operating as a hospital ship when sunk. Sources I have that mention the sinking include Blair's Silent Victory, Roscoe's United States Submarine Operations In World War II, Alden's U.S. Submarine Attacks During World War II, and Jordan's Merchant Fleets 1939, but none of these identify the Ural Maru as a hospital ship (though most do make mention of the Awa Maru debacle). Also, Jentschura, Jung, and Mickel's Warships Of The Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945, has a (small) list of Japanese hospital ships but fails to mention the Ural Maru. On the other hand, however, the wartime ONI 208-J (revised) recognition manual does list the Ural Maru as having been registered with the Red Cross as a hospital ship, though the prevailing evidence would seem to indicate that, Japanese protestations aside, the Ural Maru was not operating as a hospital ship when sunk.172.190.114.194 (talk) 23:54, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
