British or Welsh?[edit]

This has caused a bit of a flurry - Warburton describing his nationality as British, and an MP then saying "it was hard to understand how someone who does not consider themselves to be Welsh can be captain of the national rugby side". (Of course, the MP's legal nationality is also British.) Should we mention this in the article? Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:00, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We could mention it, but to be honest he is not defining himself as not being Welsh. You are allowed to be Welsh and British; I am. He is also talking with a captains cap on too, he's a diplomat. He was the captain of the British Lions, and he wants to take the sting out of an English comment. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:52, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

He said that "... when asked about his nationality during the 2013 Lions tour he would tell people he was British." He did not say that he was not Welsh. Per WP:UKNATIONALS, "For sportspeople, their nationality is usually described by the national team that they qualify to represent or, in individual sports, the national sports association or federation with which they are registered." Of course he is British too. Everyone in Wales is British too. But try re-reading the words that are relevant to this article: "For sportspeople, their nationality is usually described by the national team that they qualify to represent or, in individual sports, the national sports association or federation with which they are registered." But what if he also identifies himself as Welsh? "because my dad’s English I haven’t grown up with the same mentality as a lot of other Welshmen." We must be careful that Warburton was acting with a captains voice, and maybe as someone that would like to captain the Lions again. Every English, Scottish and Welsh Lion article I've come across states their national as their Home Country. It would be best to mention the affair but keep him as Welsh. I am completely aware of that, but he also self-identifies himself as Welsh. I would also like to hear the whole interview, as we do not know what was said before hand by Warburton, or what the question was. The same article states that if he would state he was British during the Lions tour. That is a different context to self-identifying yourself as British, as if I was the captain of the British Lions, and I was on the British Lions tour and someone asked me my nationality I would state British too. Mainly because I would not want the storm from the newspapers stating that I should have the captaincy taken off me as I saw myself as Welsh. FruitMonkey (talk) 19:03, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The link you provided is not working. Regardless of what was said before or after, it doesn't change that fact that he does acknowledge his British identity. This is not a question whether he sees himself as Welsh, it is whether he (in addition) sees himself as British, which by his own accounts he does. He was not referring to what he says on tour, he literally says if someone asks me my nationality I say British. If Sam can acknowledge his Welsh and British identity, surely his wiki entry like Andy Murray's could do the same. --Erzan (talk) 12:31, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi http://www.cardiffblues.com/rugby/first_team_squad.php?player=33335&includeref=dynamic is the current correct link for Sam. Also can ye please edit his Cardiff blues caps. Currently its stated at 175 which is way off from the stated amount of games in the link. Name?[edit]

The article indicates his name to be "Kennedy-Warburton", but based on the infobox "Kennedy" could be a middle name.
