Origin of the name[edit]

"Sandlake" is used to refer to the body of water, but the name actually comes from the Native tribes' term for it: "Sand lake" means "lake of sand". I'll have to track down a reliable source. Dismalscholar (talk) 04:59, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Update: the local history museum director reports that the idea of the name coming from a Native name is undocumented lore, probably true but with no reliable source known to them. Another proposal is that when settlers first arrived what is now the inlet was an actual lake that didn't connect to the ocean, but that since then the dune line was breached, and thus "Sand Lake" was a lake in the middle of a large area of dunes.
