Sources and the purpose of Wikipedia[edit]

It isn't the role of Wikipedia to promote or advertise. An impartial reader comparing this discography to others on the site would find many differences. For one, this discography has a lot of cheerleading in it. It's the equivalent of padding one's résumé. I have had discussions in the past with someone who has written the Sara Niemetz article, and this person has admitted a conflict of interest. That doesn't mean the person has to stop editing, but it does mean the rules of Wikipedia still have to be followed. I was hoping to make it clear that Wikipedia doesn't exist to promote.

Getting to particulars on this discography, the following can't be used as sources: iTunes because it is a retail site, Rhapsody for the same reason, and Reverbnation for similar reasons. These sites exist to promote, advertise, and sell. That isn't the purpose of Wikipedia. Sites like Discogs.com, Musicbrainz, and RateYourMusic can't be used as sources because they rely on user-generated content. I hope that readers can distinguish between a TV commercial and an encyclopedia, between language that exists to sell and language that exists to convey facts. Fortunately, I can, and I will continue to delete material that violates the rules of Wikipedia.

  • I am a fan of Ms Niemietz's work, and occasionally converse with her. No money changes hands, but I do have a COI. As such, unable to add to Article space myself. Apriltools (talk) 23:54, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
