how larger colonies are formed[edit]

The article states: This threat can be so significant that the cells will coalesce into these 8-cell colonies even in severely limiting growth conditions in order to reduce grazing vulnerability or while in nutrient-deplete conditions.

Scenedesmus does not produces larger colonies by cell coalescence. Instead, larger colonies are formed in the next generation through autospores. As noted in the cited article by Luring (2003): "...the induced colony formation is the result of the asexual reproductive process of autosporulation and not of lumping of individual cells."
