Untitled[edit]

Rather too much of this article is written as a comparison with the American education system which is fine if you're an American reader but not very helpful for a worldwide readership. What is a junior high school for instance? I've done my best to remove the American references but I don't know enough about the subject to do any more. I also wonder about the use of the American word "grade" to describe the various stages of French secondary education and wondered if form, year or level might be more appropriate words to use. I found a rather large mistake in the table about the streams that can be chosen : Série S is NOT a nutural science stream, it is a general sciences stream in wich you can chose to specialise in Phyisics, Chemestry, Math, Engeniring Sciences and Natural Sciences. You can take a BAC S stream without ever haven gone to a natural science class in during studies at a lycee if you take ISI (introduction to engeniring sciences) and ISP (Introduction to production sciences) in 2nd. um yeah i guess

Does anyone know what "If a child goes to the 'better' Lycée, he beneficiates of a "dérogation"." means? If not, I suggest we take it out. Fredsie (talk) 14:50, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If a child goes to the 'better' Lycée, he beneficiates of a "dérogation" is redundant with the preceding sentence. I removed it.Truth or consequences-2 (talk) 16:28, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Home Ec in French schools?[edit]

Is Home Economics taught in French schools? Angie Y. (talk) 01:13, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

-- No. It used to be taught in collège a very long time ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.186.10.114 (talk) 14:53, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I finished by changing the table in which there is written BAC S (natural sciences) to BAC S (various sciences depending on chosen options) because saying that the BAC S is a natural science BAC is totally false.

Biology is nor mandatory nor necessarily a very high coefficient subject, the vast majority of students choose a Math or Physics & Chemistry specialty (more so for Math). The streams are chosen by students in 2nde, if a student choses ISI (Introduction aux sciences de l'ingénieure= introduction to engineering sciences) as well as ISP (initiation aux sciences de production= Introduction to production sciences) as his option and determination courses (I won't get into explaining precisely what this is because it gets complicated) the student simply can not take natural sciences classes because no school offers that possibility. In première students can choose to take SI (sciences de l'ingénieur = engineering sciences ) and drop biology classes. What I am trying to say is that students can pass a BAC without ever having taken biology in Lycée. Moreover even those who choose biology don't necessarily choose to specialize in it , in wich case biology counts as much as French in the BAC exam (coefficient wise), even for students that do specialize in biology, Math still counts nearly as much on the BAC exam(biology : 8 Math : 7).

The source of your confusion is most certainly the fact that most students choose biology throughout the their entire studies at a Lycée. The ISI, ISP, and SI options I was talking about are available in few Lycées in France, for example I know my Lycée (Lycée Chaptal) is the only Lycée in the northern district to offer these options. But as I said previously biology doesn't necessarily have high coefficient in the BAC and even if a student specializes in it the coefficient will not be much higher than the Math coefficient.

I just want to add that the Lycée system is fairly complex, the article about it does a good job of explaining it very quickly despite a few mistakes but in reality the details are numerous and simplifying them without understanding them can lead to important errors such as thinking the BAC S in a natural science BAC.

Just for information : I am Steven a student at the Lycée Chaptal in 2nde right now.

New baccalauréat scheme[edit]

From 2019/2020 on, a new baccalauréat will be introduced, it might be better to include a section pertaining to this.

Changes include: - getting rid of S/ES/L - pupils choosing their own subjects (two majors/one minor) - not dispensing compulsory Maths/French/1st foreign language (usually English or German)/Sport/... 2A01:CB08:8C4C:6900:C19A:6EEC:3487:9C0 (talk) 08:37, 28 August 2019 (UTC) R. Y.[reply]

I confirm that it has been put in place and should be changed Vivi 762006 (talk) 13:43, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
