My view is that this title should simply be Secretary of Scotland. (Refer: The Staggering State of the Scots Statesmen from 1550 - 1650, by Sir John Scot of Scotstarvet, Director of Chancery, Edinburgh, 1754, pps:xxvii-xxviii). I can find no pre-Union reference to it being recorded as Secretary of State (although in essence that is what it was). David Lauder 11:15, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
