I'll start this in a day or two.

  • a senior legislative position, with the distinction of being the candidatus of the emperor was he the emperor's candidate for this appointment, or did every appointee to this position have this distinction....it matters where the comma is.

  1. Taking the sentence as a whole, I think that it says what I want it to; ie, that SS being the Emperor's canditatus distinguished him - although it was not an overly unusual distinguishment, only a minority of tribunes of the plebs were canditati. (The comma in the phrase you quote is there because ", a senior legislative position," is a clause which could be removed entirely.)
