Controversy

Why is there no controversy section with regards to ball biting and spinning spikes? It's one the things Afridi is most infamous for and yet completely omitted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.138.24.67 (talk) 08:34, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Shahid Afridi's age

There have been some controversies about Shahid Afridi's age although I have not come across any in recent times, except for the occasional comment in jest. However, I came across some older footage which seems to suggest that in 1996 when Afridi made his debut, his age was initially made out to be 21. his real date of birth is 1 march 1975

POV

Your article says, "A propensity for the unexpected, and a reputation for lacking patience while batting has meant that he has never been able to command a regular place in the Pakistan side.Geoff Boycott once appropriately quipped that there are more brains in a chocolate mouse"

EXCUSE ME???? How rude can this be!!! I dont think thats a thing one should write in an open encyclopaedia! i mean....would you have written anything like that about an English cricketer or an American baseball player????

Done. That was POV and the Boycott comment was unnecessary in this context. However I'm keeping the "lacking patience" reference. It sounds POV, but if someone can do a better description, please do so.--Alexio 11:39, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Display of Automatic Weapons

Shahid Afridi was recently subject of a documentary program 'Eik Din GEO Kay Saath' on GEO Television network. During the documentary program, Afridi was heavily criticised for display and use of heavy automatic weapons. Shahid was shown openly firing indiscriminately in the air an Ak-47 rifle in his home town in N.W.F.P. province of Pakistan. Many viewers of GEO Television complained after the program was aired. After the May 12 incident of riots in Karachi, Pakistan, people are increasingly concerned about open display of weaponary not just by ordinary people in Northern and Central Pakistan but public figures who are supposed to be exemplary citizens are irresponsible. These communities dismiss the criticism with petty explanation that it is their cultural jewel to display and keep arms. Many observers have requested the Federal Government of Pakistan to act immediately to de-weaponize these areas and these communities who keep weapons as jewels.

As Blnguyen mentioned in his edit ([1]) your claims are completely unsourced. Let me direct you to the template at the top of this discussion page which reads: "Controversial material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous." Please be more careful in future. Belated signature: Muzher 00:23, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Shahis is not an Afridi neither is he properly speaking a Pashtun. As his title, Sahibzada, suggests he is a Sayyed i.e. a descendant Arabs. There are Sikhs in the Afridi territory who also have taken Afridi as surname over the last few centuries. User:Moarriks 18:2623, 8 October 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Moarrikh (talkcontribs) welll i would like to say that shahid afridi is a pashtun his father is a pushto speaking and so is his brother and so is alll his family i think u should have seen it in geo when it won the wold cup.

Shaid Afridi is definately Pashtun, he has clearly stated it in this magazine. http://www.spincricket.com/2009/06/12/shahid-afridi-speaks/

Have you always been an attacking player? I come from the Northern areas, the Khyber Agency. I’m Pathan: all the Pathans are very aggressive. They’re like the Irish. [laughs] Very aggressive people. It’s in our blood. I like to play positive cricket. I like to be aggressive. It’s what cricket’s all about, you know? I don’t care if I get out. I try and play a positive game.

People who speak the language of the area in which they have lived for generations relate to that language as their mother tongue or first language but this does not always mean their ethnicity ollows the same rule. A Karachi based Pashtun may speak Urdu and not Pashto but that does not make him/her a mahajer. The same may be said of South Asians in USA/UK where numerous Indians,Pakistanis and Bangladeshis of third and fourth generations do not speak their mother tongue and we can hardly call them angrez.

Very biased article - i notice there is no mention of the role he played in winning the t20 world cup in 2009 in England ?? i would change this but the page is protected.. please add this as its vital if we are to maintain some semblance of balance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.4.138.225 (talk) 12:48, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Will try to add soon, thanks for the suggestion. --Managerarc (talk) 22:35, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Many Syeds in Pashtunkhwa tend to be speaking Pashto or some other language such as Hindko, Khawar or Sheena and identify with the people of those areas and the ethnicities linked to those the language. Shahid's family has done the same. His grandfather and father use Syed as a prefix and Hussain Shah as suffix to their name. Both Shahid and his brother are the first ones in their family to ditch the prefix and suffix but add Sahibzada. His family is revered among the local Afridi community hence considered among them. This is done all over the province but particularly in tribal belt more so. Although I live in USA now but my family is from Khyber Agency and know the people there very well. There are many non-Pashtun communities including non-Muslims such as Sikhs and Hindus who have taken on Afridi name due to Hamsaya facility i.e. when a major Pashtun tribe brings in other clans and communities under their protection. The Syeds of Hazara known as Mashwanis are the only Pashto speaking community among a sea of Hindko speakers and have a history of bravery and honor but accept their Syed origins. Such is the case of Syeds of Kagha, strong Pashtu speakers, who now are beginning to distance themselves from Pashtuns due to the political turmoil in Hazara as a result of renaming of the province NWFP to Khyber-Pashtunkhwa. Shahid Afridi's situation is well documented in Pakistani papers and magazines. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.151.249.62 (talk) 10:37, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

That is absolutely incorrect! Having been throughout and studied ALL Pashtun dominated territories in Pakistan and Afghanistan, contrary to your views, non-Pashtuns have not integrated or adopted as well as you may think they have. Pashtuns don't normally marry outside their ethnic group, and the Sikhs and other minorities living in Pashtun dominated territories are refugees (Hamsayas) and have in no way integrated into the community. Did you know that Peshawar has one of the largest Christian communities in Pakistan, ALL of whom are from Goa, India. In the same way all the Sikhs are from places in the Punjab who came looking for refuge just as the Christians. Also the Hindkowans and Abasin maintain their own culture and identity, seperate from the Pashtuns. To be a Pashtun you need to fulfill four criteria:

1) Your father must be a Pashtun. i.e. you must have a tribe.(Note: No one can adopt a tribes name. The Malaks and elders don't allow it.) 2) You must be able to speak Pashto. 3) You must adhere to Pashtunwali. 4) You MUST be a Muslim (also a key edict in Pashtunwali)

Otherwise you are a not considered a Pashtun. And the titles Syed, Pir, Mian or Gilani have been throughout history been adopted or granted to many scholars and students-including Pashtuns-of Islam who have adopted it as a part of their full name; similarly many Pashtuns carry the title Malak, Khan, Nawab, Sahibzada, Arbab in their full names even though they don't happen to be one.

And I know Shahid's family personally; he is an Akakhel Afridi, whose clan is permanently settled in Kohat (not Darra Adamkhel). His family moved to Karachi after his uncles and father opened up a few businesses there. He is also a grandnephew of the former Governor of Balochistan, Khushal Khan (KK) Afridi. The suffix you mention is most probably is the name of an ancestor, a practice which is also relatively common amongst Pashtuns who come from well off families. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kamran4 (talkcontribs) 05:03, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Trivia section

I removed the following text from the article as it was not appropriate. This information needs to be integrated in the form of prose, constructing anarrative of Afridi's career, not isolated incidents without context. I've placed a copy here as it might provide useful pointers for someone rewriting the article. Nev1 (talk) 18:35, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Ummm I've joined the discussion, his career highlights should stay, they are not trivia. Please read the definition of trivia. These are important feats in his career and should be kept as a part of the article. (Wiki id2(talk) 18:48, 30 March 2011 (UTC))
Thanks for finally gracing the talk page with your presence. The Oxford English Dictionary's definition of trivia is "details, considerations, or pieces of information of little importance or value", and yes I do believe the "career highlights" section meets than in as much as it has little value. The information itself might have worth, but the presentation is abysmal. It's just a collection of random facts without context, and therefore without meaning. That Afridi has struck the most sixes in ODIs or is the second players in ODIs to score 6,000 runs and take 300 wickets in ODIs should be mentioned in the article but in its appropriate place. Moreover, I'd argue that a "career highlights" section is inherently not neutral as it focusses on only one aspect of Afridi's career. If this article was properly written, there'd be no space for junk like is as these facts would be mentioned elsewhere, so would be creating unnecessary repetition, and a properly written lead would summarise Afridi's career including not just the highlights but presenting a balanced synopsis including fallow periods. In my opinion the section does not belong in the article if there are any aspirations whatsoever to lift it to a half-decent standard. If you're still in doubt, take a look at WP:TRIVIA, a guideline which suggests "Sections with lists of miscellaneous information (such as "trivia" sections) should be avoided as an article develops. Such information is better presented in an organized way." Nev1 (talk) 19:16, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Career highlights

  • Made a half-century from 26 balls and took 3 second-innings wickets in Pakistan's series-drawing Test victory against India in March 2005.[1]
  • Holds the joint record with Brian Lara for the third fastest ODI century off 45 balls in April 2005 against India.[2]
  • Highest aggregate sixes scored in the 50-over game.He holds the record for most sixes per innings.[3]
  • Scored four consecutive sixes off a Harbhajan Singh over in a Test match against India in January 2006, matching a feat that Kapil Dev achieved in 1990.[4]
  • Holds four of the top ten fastest ODI half centuries, twice completed in 18 balls and twice in 20 balls. He has also scored a half century off just 21 balls.[5]
  • Made 32 runs off a Malinga Bandara over in an ODI game at Abu Dhabi in 2007. He struck four consecutive sixes and it was the 2nd most expensive over in ODI history.
  • Is only the second player in ODI history to achieve the combination of 6,000 runs, 100 catches and 300 wickets. The other player being Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya.[6]
  • On 21 June 2010, batting in the fifth match of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh in Dambulla, he achieved the world record of hitting the most number of sixes in an ODI career, which was previously owned by Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka. In the same match, he scored his sixth ODI century, also the sixth fastest century in ODI Cricket coming off 53 balls. He ended at 124 off 60 balls, which became his highest ODI score. This was also his second century in the 2010 Asia Cup.[7]
  • On 2 November 2010, in the UAE neutral series against South Africa, in the third ODI, Afridi broke the record for most sixes hit in all formats of the game. He beat Sanath Jayasuriya to the top spot with 353 sixes. He scored more sixes than Jayasuriya but also took less than 200 matches to equal Jayasuriya's record.[8]

Clubs

He's played for too many teams - the inbox has a limit on the number that can be added. I suggest we remove any that are T20 franchise leagues only and add a note to say so. Comments? Blue Square Thing (talk) 16:11, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Please remove any reference to Shahid Afridi being related to Javed Afridi - this is incorrect. They just share the same family name. Saimaxkhan (talk) 18:58, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Not done: Several sources such as this say they are cousins. Sam Sailor 01:22, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

I work for Shahid and am the UK Director for his Foundation. I can verify this with him myself-please let me know how to proceed. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saimaxkhan (talkcontribs) 10:13, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Please confirm what needs doing to remove reference to Javed Afridi as Shahid Afridi’s cousin. Thanks Saimaxkhan (talk) 08:26, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

I have raised the question on the BLP Noticeboard for you I suggest you go here for more support. Koncorde (talk) 13:26, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

There’s no reference in the Dawn News article that Shahid and Javed are cousins, so I’m not sure how this is being used to justify their family ties Saimaxkhan (talk) 15:21, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
