Need albums sales cite

I don't know if this question fits in this Talk:-section, but anyway I want to know why the User (128.119.234.78) removed the date/link to the source where the information about album sales are from [1].
In my opinion it is important to mention a reliable source with such kind of information as sales figures, and furthermore it is important to know during which time the information was recorded (point in time) because "selling" is a continuous process.
In addition I would like to know a reputable source for all the worldwide sales figures (for US sales it's billboard.com or riaa.com).

I would be grateful for an answer.

Gay Icon Project

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 22:19, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I am not myself family, but I sing karaoke in a gay bar hereabouts; I'll point the category list out to the regulars, for comment. FWIW, I wouldn't have put Shania in that category, myself.

Wooden leg

Wooden leg? I don't get it. Does she have a wooden leg, as mentioned in passing in the article (though no detail is given regarding it)? It definitely doesn't seem so. Soumyasch 17:06, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Some anon user (62.56.50.167) put such info regarding this. The change has been reverted back now, as it was not true. --Soumyasch 17:12, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

This is just a widespread rumor and according to published reports, including a CMT special on myths in the industry, it is false.

I wondered if elvis really had a wooden heart?

Sixth or seventh in sales?

The wiki article on best selling albums says she is seventh, but this article sixth? Should I edit this to reflect what the article says or is it listed as sixth for a reason? --Karafias 07:32, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

You're right, Come on Over used to be the sixth best selling but has recently dropped to seventh, this page has not been updated yet. Thankyoubaby 15:28, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Native North American?

It says here that: "I don't know how much Indian blood I actually have in me, but as the adopted daughter of my father Jerry, I became...". Does this mean that she does infact have some Native American blood in her? SilentRage 02:40, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

20 July: Shania might not know what blood line her biological father, Clarence Edwards, had, is my thought. Wattylfc 19:30, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

She was adopted by a full-blood Ojibwa and by Canadian Law, sadly, that makes her Native American. She has no traceable genetic relation to true Native Americans. Just search on Google and you will find out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DocBlanchard (talkcontribs)

Grammys

I'm not convinced that the big table of Grammy nominations is really adding anything - maybe just a list of the 5 she's won....? Wattylfc 19:28, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Actually being nominated for 18 Grammy Awards is quite an accomplishment. Alot of artist's pages have these charts, or list all wins and nominations. See Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake or Kanye West. --Thankyoubaby 19:46, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeh I understand that, but it's just that the table is really long and the only one about awards, neglecting the hundreds of other ones, and she has won/been nominated for some other pretty prestigious awards too. Wattylfc 16:46, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
There is a whole page of just her awards see Shania Twain awards, but just as a sample the Grammys are listed on the main article, just like all her singles aren't listed, just the number ones. --Thankyoubaby 16:08, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Age at death of parents

I've always thought she was 21, but these links confirm it:

Yes, but if you do the math from her birthdate which is in August 1965 and the parents death in November of 1987, you arrive at an age of 22. I think the dates are correct which would mean that the 2 websites which you have linked to are incorrect. Renrenren 14:24, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Her birthdate and the date of her parents death are both correct, meaning she was 22 at the time. JP4Tide85 15:12, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

I suppose you're right, I just don't see why pretty much every single source says she was 21... Wattylfc 12:56, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I think it might have something to do with 21 being a milestone birthday. The tragedy forced her to become an adult and to take the place of her parents. Many of these documentary's and shows on TV always take some share of liberty with the actual facts. The Shania Movie on CBC is a case in point. Renrenren 13:36, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmm yeh that makes some sense. Wattylfc 19:35, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Can someone source this?

I think the origin of the name Shania is mistaken, as described in the current article. The Biography Channel has a one hour show about Shania Twain. In it Shania Twain herself says that she worked with a co-performer at Deerhurst Lodge in Huntsville Ontario who had the name Shania. The co-worker told her it was Ojibway origin. When the record label was pressuring for a name change she chose Shania, from her friend at Deerhurst Lodge. 74.105.161.112 18:40, 19 April 2007 (UTC)—Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.105.161.112 (talkcontribs)

Shania's languages

Does anybody know if Shania is bilingual? If she is, that would be interesting information to add to the article.

She grew up in Canada, which is a bilingual country, and Eastern Canada has a large Francophone population. She has lived in Switzerland for several years, where they speak French. It would not surprise me if she spoke it very well.

Shania is fluent in French, and I think Mutt is too. I remember reading once that Shania was asked a question in English by a French fan, and she replied to her in French. And, I believe Eja - her son - has been raised to speak both French and English. wattylfc 15:14, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Morals

Why has this section been deleted? Shania stands up for what she believes and it's crucial to make note of this fact. Wattylfc 17:28, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

I agree it shouldn't have been removed. Thankyoubaby 00:10, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm guessing she stands up for her morals not her morales. :) Alvie3 01:27, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Album

"Her third album Come on Over is the biggest-selling album of all time by a female musician...". I don't think this is true. I am sure that the biggest-selling album by a female artist was Alanis Morissette's Jagged little pill which is the this most sold album ever only beaten by Michael Jackson's Thriller and an album by AC/DC. --Euro Mok (talk) 01:27, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Album sales and awards

Stacy twain keeps changing Shania's total album sales from 65 million to 75 million and her BMI Songwriter awards from 27 to 39. Please note that this information is sourced. Regarding her album sales, Shania's official website states: "Her total album sales exceed 65 million copies worldwide." Likewise, another citation from her website lists her BMI awards. I count 27, not 39. I have reverted back to the wording that is supported by citations. It is incumbent on someone who wants to change this to find other reliable sources that say different. However, I can assure you I have looked. I have found sites that say 75 million and one that totals 85 million, but they are fan sites and not reliable. The problem is that there is no reliable source for international sales. So, unless and until we find a reliable source that says otherwise, I think we should stick with what is stated on her website. Sunray 17:52, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Recently "some editors" have been adjusting the total album sales based on adding the numbers given in the article. Please note that we have a reliable source for her total sales: her website lists it at 65 million. Likewise, her website lists 34 M for total sales of Come on Over. We really do have to stick with these numbers, because estimates of international sales are unreliable. Note that several of the other numbers given in the article have "citation needed tags" on them. Sunray (talk) 23:25, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
This might help: U.S. sales are recorded by the RIAA so I have added citations for that and removed all figures for which there are no verifiable sources. The numbers still do not add up exactly to the total album sales cited on her website (which is higher), but as stated above, international sales are really hard to pin down. At least all the numbers are now sourced. I hope that this will end the need to continue reverting and we can discuss further changes to the numbers here. Sunray (talk) 09:08, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Spelling of birth name?

Is it "Eileen" or "Eilleen"? Someone just changed the article to say "Eileen" (the more common spelling, with one L). However, the IMDb article about Shania gives her birth name as "Eilleen" (with two L's). Do we have any reliable sources for the correct spelling? Richwales (talk) 19:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

FWIW, a Google search on "Eilleen Regina Edwards" (with two L's) gives about 21,600 hits. A search on "Eileen Regina Edwards" (with one L) gives about 2,800 hits. This is of course not citable as a source for our purposes, but such a large number of hits on what is definitely not the conventional spelling of the name leads me to suspect that "Eilleen" (with two L's) is probably not just a random typo. Richwales (talk) 21:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Album "Send It With Love"

There is another album called "Send It With Love" (e.g. [2]). According to a comment on another site it is the same album as The Complete Limelight Sessions which is not totally correct as at least the track order is totally different. I think the (first) release is from 2005. Should we add this to the album section ? Should we add this to Shania Twain discography ? There is already a redirect of Send It... Eileen or Eilleen?

Shania Twain was born with a different first name, which is spelled "Eileen" in some areas (e.g, "Early Years") and "Eilleen" elsewhere (e.g., "Music Career", background information sidebar). Which is correct? -128.163.41.214 (talk) 14:00, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

I changed it to "Eilleen" everywhere except in the direct quotation. Her official bio[3] and Britannica[4] both give her name as "Eilleen". decltype (talk) 14:24, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Origin of Shania Twain

Can someone give me a definition or point me in the right direction about the origin section that is present in the infobox? I know that Shania Twain was born in Windsor, and then grew up in Timmins. She always refers to Timmins as her hometown. In fact, I've never even heard her talk about Windsor in any interviews. I think we need to establish what is considered Shania's origin, and have it noted here in the talk page so that the article page can best reflect what the community thinks it should be. --Renrenren 01:10, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

There is confusion regarding what the meaning of 'origin' refers to for a musicial artist infobox. It means where the subject began their music career. Jim Michael (talk) 23:56, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Well right off the bat I see a some problems with that source:
 1. At the top it says "(This is only example for text...)", this makes it appear that the info is not finished on the page
 2. The title of the paragraph where it talks about the voice type says: "Jojo Facts", this doesn't appear to be about Shania Twain.
 3. The source does not appear to me to be a reliable source

I agree too about that web, but I think Shania is contralto too. She has very low notes. that's not part of mezzo range. I'm sorry for my English, I'm from Argentina. Shania should reach many high notes for being mezzo, but she can't reach them. That's why I think she's contralto.Besides she has 3 octaves, all of them in contralto range. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.127.87.173 (talk) 00:25, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Her face measurements may be close to perfect, that is if there is such a thing as perfection. That I don't know. But I do know this. If white bread could sing, it would sound like Shania Twain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.32.17.133 (talk) 00:35, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Descent

In the categories at the bottom of this article, it shows Shania as :

Canadians of Irish descent
Canadians of English descent
Anglophone Canadians of French Canadian descent

So which is it and are there any sources for any of these? With a birth name Edwards, I tend to think it is of English descent. --Renrenren (talk) 12:54, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

What you "tend to think" based on her father's surname is completely irrelevant. Wikipedia is meant to be based on fact, not speculation and opinion. (67.234.138.239 (talk) 19:07, 15 September 2012 (UTC))

She claimed Indian ancestry

The article mentions that "people presumed" that she had native American ancestry because of her step-father(!?) But the reality is that she herself repeatedly claimed to be a native North American and only when the press challenged her by presenting facts, did she back off these claims. The article seems to be whitewashing this and makes no reference to the fact that she was actively, and falsely, making these claims by simply contending that unknown "people" somehow assumed this for some reason because her Step-father was of native American ancestry which doesn't even appear to make sense, and frames it as if she was simply a victim of circumstance. She herself claimed that she was of half Indian ancestry, not that her stepfather/adoptive father was. This was a significant controversy at the time, and given no mention here. People "presumed" only because she stated unequivocally that she was of half native ancestry, not that she was legally native, but by blood. (67.234.138.239 (talk) 19:29, 15 September 2012 (UTC))

Career and new album

Hello all, I am wondering if there is a particular reason why my edits keep getting removed? I keep trying to update Shania's latest news on the new album coming up and I have credible sources and articles to back it up. I cite my sources and my edits keep getting removed entirely. I am new to Wikipedia and I am not sure what is it about my edit that bothers you? I was under the impression that Wikipedia allowed users to log in and add some of the latest news if it has not yet been posted on Wikipedia. Is there some kind of ownership thing that I don't know about? Do I need to ask some kind of permission before I post something on Shania's Wikipedia page?

Curtisboimatthews (talk) 21:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I explain each time I remove your speculative and poorly sourced content. Check the history. If you want to reference a Tweet, do it. If you're trying to make a case from a series of tweets, don't. They can't be sourced. Find a WP:SECONDARY source that supports something, not the WP:PRIMARY sources you're not even referencing correctly.
We don't know the album name, so we shouldn't speculate on whether it's a song or an album name. See WP:RS and a handful of other guidelines and polices. Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:25, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Ref citations

In general, news articles (as distinct from major works) are cited on WP using sentence case, rarely title case, and almost never all caps. This improves legibility, as it helps the reader to distinguish proper nouns. We do not simply copy the capitalization used by the original publisher's stylebooks, which too often amount to "SHOUT EVERYTHING, IT SELLS MORE PAPERS!!!". LeadSongDog come howl! 16:31, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Sorry. You're wrong, and I erred in stating I asked at MOS:CAPS. The brief discussion was at Wikipedia talk:Citing sources/Archive 39#What case should newspaper story titles be in? There is no standard for Wikipedia. Use the case that is provided at the source, which is what I did. Several other Manuals of Style, notably APA, Associated Press' and Reuters', require title case. Well, you were quite right to have asked there. The guidance you received, though, was both inconsistent and clearly flawed. The very first sentence of MOS:CAPS reads "Wikipedia avoids unnecessary capitalization." More specific guidance is given at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Titles. Please note the distinction between major and minor works: periodicals are major; articles in them are minor. @SMcCandlish: recently (8 August) proposed a guidance merger at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Archive_182#Composition_titles_advice_consolidation, but it seems like nobody noticed before the archiving bot kicked in. I agree with him that such consolidation to reduce confusion is grossly overdue. LeadSongDog come howl! 19:45, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Hadn't noticed it was archived, but that was basically just a notice that I'm going to do the consolidation; it was already discussed a couple of years ago, and in two discussions no one has objected, and it's clearly needed. It's just tedious, and I haven't gotten around to it (neither has anyone else).  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  22:18, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
@LeadSongDog: See MOS:TITLES: Use title case by default, and never use all-caps, per MOS:CAPS. In actual practice, what happens about 99% of the time is that people just copy-paste the title from the source and move on (and this is okay; our style and citation guidelines are mainly for cleanup editors, not new editors, and many editors never read any guidelines or template documentation that they don't have to, they just edit). What should be done, per MOS:CAPS, is reduction of any title/heading in SCREAMING ALL-CAPS to title case per MOS:TITLES, in running prose always and in citations by default. In the case of citations, sentence case can be used for cited article/chapter titles if our article has a citation style that expects this for such titles, per WP:CITEVAR. If the WP article is just using the default WP:CS1 citation templates, or a random mixture of things – i.e., it doesn't have an explicitly defined citation style like Vancouver, etc., and in particular doesn't have one that requires title-casing of article names – just use title case like normal. Probably no one will actually care if you use sentence case in the cite, though. Many newspapers and journals use sentence case, and since people just copy-paste them, we have millions of citations using sentence case for cited article titles, even when the cites are not in a format requiring this. What we definitely don't want is all-caps titles, anywhere (they're a PoV problem, and just totally inappropriate style – neither our article text nor our citations are headlines), or sentence-case titles in article prose (they're a readability problem – they look like sentences, not titles). Sentence-case titles are okay in citations, because they are programmatically formatted and are, well, citations – it's automatically clear that they're titles of cited works.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  22:18, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Agreed with SMcCandlish. MOS:TITLES is not about citations but headings, and other content. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:39, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
It's also about citations, it's just that we have a more specific guideline about that. But you can't randomly ignore MoS in citations. It's not permissible to go change all citations in an article to huge, pink text, to make up your own weird date format, etc. It's permissible per CITEVAR for a clear and consistent citation style to vary from MOS expectations in minor ways. This is an accommodation for, e.g., American medical professionals editing our medical articles, who are entirely steeped in a particular external citation style (that of the AMA). It is more valuable to the project to have their input flow constructively than to nit-pick them into learning a new citation style. The average editor, however, is not tied through professional experience to one citation style and is editing all kinds of articles; to prevent chaos, we have a default citation style (which is MoS-compliant) and people should use it absent a clear reason not to, e.g. having wandered onto an article that is already done in AMA citation style or whatever.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  20:01, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
Part of the difficulty is that a few publishers programmatically upcase story headlines. In some cases, such as Fox Business, just viewing the html page source shows them in both sentence case in the "title" field, and title case in the "dc.title" Dublin Core field. Of course the New York Times super-cases everything. Simply adopting the cut-paste from the rendered page leads to an implicit bias: the sources from these problem publishers jump off the screen, the other publishers' sources seem a little less prominent. At least within a single WP article, the presentation should be consistent, not favoring the NYT over the WaPo, nor Bloomberg over MSNBC. LeadSongDog come howl! 19:04, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
That's not actually part of the difficulty. The difficult is, and this is as a whole, that you have not acknowledged what the two of us have said. There are several style guides that define title case for article titles. Sentence case is almost never used in any style guide. Please list the style guides I commented on earlier. For bonus marks, link to their article title MoS. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:17, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
I think you're misinterpreting LeadSonDog; he's making, in part, one of the same points I did: People tend to just copy-paste, so we end up with ALL-CAPS titles in citations frequently, but they are a PoV problem, not just a subjective "style" matter. They should thus be normalized to title case, or to sentence case if our article already has a consistent citation style using that convention. In running text, they should always be in title case.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  20:01, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
Further discussion of these matters should be moved to WT:MOSTITLE, as they are not pertinent to the Shania Twain article.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  20:01, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

Anishinaabe

In a nutshell, she isn't. Twain's stepfather was said to be Ojibwe; however, since he's her step-father, she doesn't have his blood. She's claimed that her biological father was of Cree descent; however, the rest of the family disputes that. Ahalenia (talk) 02:32, 19 May 2017 (UTC)Ahalenia

Her name is not Shania Twain??

Recently, someone made an edit saying that her name is not Shania Twain, but Eilleen Twain, which must mean that everyone who knows her independent of her profession knows her as Eilleen Twain (that is, nobody of this kind knows her as Shania Twain.) Georgia guy (talk) 11:44, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

It is User:Concord19 who made this edit in case you're wondering. Georgia guy (talk) 13:42, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Georgia guy: I think you're correct. MOS:MULTIPLENAMES is our guidance.
@Concord19: would you object to a change? Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:52, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
I reverted the change. Her preference of name does not change the fact that she is best known by that name. Her birth name is still correctly reflected in the lede. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:43, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, "she is best known by that name". And John Wayne is likewise best known as John Wayne. Yet his Wikipedia states this as the first info presented:
"Marion Michael Morrison (born Marion Robert Morrison; May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed Duke, was an American actor..."
Anyone here who made the effort to read my Change Summaries saw the justification that I had offered. I never once stated nor implied that:
"...her name is not Shania Twain..." (me being misquoted/misrepresented at the top of this section, and far more blatantly, in the section title)
THIS shows both edits I had made.
Now I might be totally fine with leaving this article as it currently stands. If that were the case, I would hope that everyone here would be aware that this would require changing the John Wayne article, if we are going to have consistency across Wikipedia.
And for these types of situation, we have Wikipedia Policies. And you've been so kind as to highlight the Manual Of Style. But you've left me scratching my head as to whether you bothered to actually read this policy you're pointing to.
Quote:
"For people who are best known by a pseudonym, the legal name should usually appear first in the article, followed closely by the pseudonym. Follow this practice even if the article itself is titled with the pseudonym..."
So thank you for giving us the guidance provided here by WP-MOS. That will be the grounds I will be using for my next edit, which will be a revert to the changes I had originally made back on Mar21. --Concord19 (talk) 05:36, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
The prefix pseudo- means fake. Thus you're implying that Shania is a fake name. Georgia guy (talk) 10:21, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
Here is the name of another famous person named "Twain": Mark Twain.
Now notice how Wikipedia starts this article:
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer.
There is nothing "fake" about the name Mark Twain. It was simply not his birth name. Ask people what his birth name was, and many will not be able to answer you. The same holds for this Twain named Shania. You may not like it, but this is the standard which Wikipedia goes by. And btw, pseudonyms have gotten FAR more popular since Mark Twain's time. Particularly, in our current age of the internet, when many people consider it necessary for privacy and security purposes. Examples being "Georgia guy", or the name I am going by here. There is an overlap of reasons why names are invented and used these ways.. --Concord19 (talk) 13:59, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

Shania was not the first to crossover.

Shania is in correctly credited with being the first to crossover from country to pop but she was not, that was Linda Ronstadt who accomplished this in the early70's , Shania didn't do that till late nineties. Linda went on to crossover over to rock, pop, light opera back into country hits and then into traditional Mexican songs. And each crossover meant selling millions of albums. 2600:2B00:821C:F300:E587:B655:DCCA:3036 (talk) 22:37, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
