Overview

"The Shaw Studio (邵氏片場), owned by Shaw Brothers (HK) Ltd. HKSE: 0080, is the forerunner and the largest movie production company of Hong Kong movies."

This is not entirely clear. Perhaps this could be rephrased a bit to be more understandable. 67.168.99.182 00:56, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

present days

I heard that Sir Run Run stopped producing movies at the Shaw Studio ever since his wife died years ago. The company still holds the copyrights of many old movies, but nothing new was added for decades. After Sir Run Run stopped producing movies, did the Shaw's label continue on movies produced by other people? What happened to the many soundstages of the Shaw Studio? Did they demolish the building to sell the precious land or are the sound stages leased to TVB for TV productions? Such facts should be confirmed and added to the article. Excellent questions, and I agree it would be great to have them explored. The "end" of SB is certainly noteworthy in the history of HK film, during which SB effectively got beatten out by the New Wave. As well, it would be nice to see the shift into TV explored here as well.Dxco 10:06, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

The Shaw Brothers marque was back in action in 2002 with a film called Drunken Monkey, written, directed and starring Lau Kar Leung. Will try to dig up some facts about other titles being produced, and the status of the studios. Wisekwai 15:38, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Ninja In A Deadly Trap

While this is a Venoms movie, it isn't a Shaw Brothers movie as Kuo Chui, Chiang Sheng and Lu Feng had left before that so I'm removing it from the list. Lostinube 15:47, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

ListBloat

I think we have hit the point where we need to worry about the actor and movie list: left unchecked, its slowly on its way to becoming a list of every actor and movie related to SB, which is not something we want. Dxco 19:07, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I'll go further here: I think, for the scope of the current article and what it might grow into in the foreseeable future, a list of perhaps up to six of the most well known representative actors. ie, top stars: for the late sixites/seventies/early eighties, there werent all that many tipy-top stars, relative to the total number of actors in the SB pool. So, to combat list bloat, it isn't an unreasonable thing to chissel the list down to a small group of best-known, representative actors.
As for movies, I think a similar list of 5 or 6 top-of-the-line best known representative films should be listed here. This new list of representative films would be both very popular at the time (and subsequently), and would contain lots of the actors in our new "representative list of A-list SB actors" discussed above.
To be clear here again, random people are already beginning to stop by and go Oo, I know a Shaw Brothers movie/actor! I better put it on the list! We don't want this! This article is not a list of every SB actor ever alive (scores) nor every SB movie ever made (many many hundreds). We should provide for the interested reader a representative sample of these categories, listing a small number of actors/movies who are most notable within the confines of the topic.Dxco 19:21, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
For example, our lists could/should be shortened down to this size, and should contain this level of granularity in terms of how deep we delve into the topic of actors and movies. This is just a quick random collection, and not intended as a candidate for what would go on the list (tho admittedly the actor list is fairly representative if forced to be 6 or less) to get the point accross of what scale we should focus on:
Some actors Some movies
Gordon Liu Come Drink With Me
Cheng Pei Pei 8 Diagram Pole Fighter
Kara Hui Dirty Ho
Lo Lieh Legendary Weapons Of China2
David Chiang The Blood Brothers
Ti Lung
Do please respond to this so we can hash out a representative list of movies and actors: its now on my personal list to roll into the article and gut the list-spew, so your help will be excellent in making sure the result is informative, represents notability, and is useful to the interested reader. Dxco 19:45, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Since there is already a list of Shaw Brothers movies on wikipedia perhaps you don't need the list at all. If anything, there should be a list of films that were perhaps the most profitable, the most critically aclaimed etc. The list of actors should be spun-off into its own article as well. The Shaw Brothers Studio article should be more about the studio itself. I do agree that the movie list is way too long and so is the actor list. Does every Venom have to be on the list when they have their own article on wikipedia? Just my thoughts. Lostinube 18:59, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Right there with you, Lostinube. But, in the meantime, I just want to hatchet down this bloat :P Dxco 03:37, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
OK, so why don't we start with the obivous - we only need one Brave Archer movie (just put it under the Brave Archer series). Only use one of the Venom movies (perhaps their first, The Five Deadly Venoms). Only one or two each of the Shaolin movies. For Lau Kar Leung use the 36th chamber (which is on the list as the Master Killer for some reason) and perhaps one or two others. Come Drink With Me HAS to be on the list. Acutally, the list is very skewed towards Chang Cheh movies. Almost nothing by Chor Yuen. By limiting the Chang Cheh movies to maybe four or five (one Venoms, one Ti Lung/David Chiang, one of the Shaolin movies and one of his fantasy movies) we can cut down the bloat considerably. Here are my recommendations for the movie list - The Five Deadly Venoms, The Blood Brothers, the Brave Archer, the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, The Avenging Eagle (as it represents Sun Chong), The Flying Guillotine, The One-Armed Swordsman, plus a Chor Yuen movie but I'm not sure which one. Ok, since we have reference to some of the primary actors in the body of the article, and given that the listbloat has gotten completely out of hand, I removed the uberlistbloat. I encourage fellow users to make reference to notable representative actors from within the article itself. If you cant figure out a way to do so, take that as a sign that perhaps it just isnt need for the scope of the article. Feel free to make a separate SB artist list page elsewhere if its felt to be needed. But for this article, we need to remind ourselves that this is a summary article about SB, not an article about a SB actor lists.Dxco 03:00, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

1000 films?

this article says shaw released ~1,000 films, i think this needs a citation. celestial pictures lists 760[1] although the wording is rather vague and may just refer to home video releases post-acquisition. 66.158.232.98 (talk) 22:27, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Closure

Article is written in past tense but does not detail any of the circumstances of the studio's closure. This would be a pertinent addition if anyone has the info. Ham Pastrami (talk) 02:55, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Broken Links

Lu Feng is linked in this article to a person that is not the Lu Feng of Shaw Brothers fame. This should be corrected either by replacing the page that was for the Shaw Brother's actor or this link should be removed. Sun Chien is linked to Sun Jian's article about the historical character and not the Shaw Brothers actor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WereTech (talkcontribs) 01:35, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
