History

The History section of this page has been moved to History of Sheffield Wednesday F.C.

I am in the process of summarising the info in this section to give a brief overview of the history of the club.

Former Players

This section is currently not adding much value to the article. Its an unhelpful list which most people would simply pass over. My suggestion would be to reduce it down to 10 or less players and then including details such as years with club, position, appearences and goals. I'd remove it for the simple reason that you can't put every former player and on the other extreme it's hard to limit it to 10 players as there will always be a difference of opinion (it's not like ur a small club and only have 5 notable players etc) of which 10 to include, there's a link at the bottom to former players...that should be enough imo. If not, you could base on the Sheffield Wednesday all time XI (I'm sure they'll be some sort of poll in regards to this conducted sometime, I've checked the legends section on the official website and that has too many players to include). A Sheffield Wednesday XI was produced in the last couple of seasons. I'm not sure who was in the list, but I'm sure it will be on the net somewhere. I would have no objection with the section being removed as there is now a seperate page dedicated to the subject. Dan1980 07:17, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Scandal of 1964

Rather surprised that there is no article on the 1964 scandal and have been wanting to write one but have not had a good enough reference. However, good article in The Times, Saturday (23 July 2006) interviewing Swan. I have started the Tony Kay article, I think that it is the easiest. However, the scandal does not seem to have a name. I have suggested Sheffield Wednesday scandal as it is descriptive and should unambiguously describe the event. Other ideas welcome. Cutler 10:12, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I've been thinking about the same thing, and found the same article, but the name isn't expansive enough. The Sheffield Wednesday players were only involve in part of a larger scandal. Over 10 footballers were jailed over the incident and it would be better if the article could cover the whole scandal rather than the Wednesday-Ipswich match alone. I'm definately with Josh on this one. Sheffield Wednesday scandal makes it sound like it was only SWFC as a club that were involved, whereas the truth is that it was a few SWFC players along with several players from other clubs. I'm actually quite annoyed that the former players section has been removed as it is a useful source to cite. I thought the whole point of wikipedia was that people could add to it? Badge

Found a supurb page on the subject here. Its a personal site but well researched. I've managed to match up a couple of the facts with published other sources. There is a picture of the city crest being used on a program in the early fifties in Sheffield Football: A History and the 1970 creation of the modern badge matches up other research. The original badge appears with dates of use. It also comes with a bibliography. Any opinions on the usablity of this material. josh (talk) 12:29, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Today's Featured Article suggestion

I have suggested this article for use on the Main Page as Today's featured article. I have used the club crest as the thumb image to accompany it, does anyone think that any of the other images would be better. Football Kit Template

In response to Panarjedde's removal of detail from the away kit design, I reverted this edit as no consensus has been reached on this issue. Your so-called policy agreement was actually two separate discussions (not polls) [1][2] where the issue became rather heated and there was clearly no consensus reached. As per Wikipedia policy if no consensus is reached the article should be left as it is, hence why I reverted your removal of the kit design from this page.

There is no good reason to remove detail from the away kit, the design and colour of the kit changes every season or two, hence detail on the kit is integral to the design. As has been mentioned several times before there are no shortage of people to watch these pages and make sure that the kit designs are kept up to date; this page even has its own Wikiproject that will ensure that the kit design is changed when necessary. Champions League

Deletion

Sheffield Wednesday F.C. squad, part of the SWFC project, is up for deletion and no-one seems to be defending it (apart from me, a Unitedite for 50 years) although it has been worked on for 6 months or so. Use of the singular/plural

As this will inevitably come up while the article is on the main page:

This article, being about a British football club, is written in British English (following the recommendation by the Manual of Style on the relevant variety of English to use in an article). As a result, it uses the discretionary plural, namely that collective nouns such as club and team can be used in either the singular or the plural. Generally, in British English media, sporting teams are referred to in the plural. This is notably different from American English, where sporting teams are always referred to in the singular. However, in British English it is perfectly grammatically correct to use the plural and this should be borne in mind before jumping to conclusions about inappropriate subject/verb agreement. Wednesdayite

Hey all, there is an article on Wednesdayite which is up for deletion and needs some TLC, I have cleaned it up and added some independent citations, but it needs defending and a little more work on the article if possible - it would be a shame to lose this as people are generalising that Wednesdayite is just a generic term for fans and don't undeerstand that it is also a big political point as well as a large fans trust. 82.38.202.151 22:19, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Hillsborough disaster part

obviously this was a terrible disaster, but does it really have a place in this article? Sheffield Wednesday were in no way invovled in the game, i think that section should just be on the stadium's article but not more than a passing sentence on it here. i have seen Belgium national football team does not have a mention of Heysel disaster for example. -- Bongobaily 04:14, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Rivalry & Website links

The last line about the last 10 matches is now out of date as tehre wasa match todaywhich Wednesday won 2-0.

Also, why is Owlstalk the only forum to get a link. Better forums exist in the form of Owlsonline and Owlsalive. Owlsmad and Owlszone are also popular Sheffield Wednesday forums. Redundant origin of name

The article explains the name: "Sheffield Wednesday are the only English League club with a day of the week in their name.

The club was initially a cricket club named The Wednesday Cricket Club after the day of the week when they played their matches. The footballing side of the club was established to keep the team together and fit during the winter months."

He is not an AVID Sheffield United fan at all. That's nonsense. I've provided three sources (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo_zT3o2n8Y&noredirect=1, http://palinstravels.co.uk/book-1104, http://palinstravels.co.uk/book-1522) to him showing his support for Sheffield Wednesday, and each time someone comes along and deletes it. Those sources are pretty poor. Youtube is not an acceptable source (it's a primary source), and neither of the other two explicitly state that Palin is a Wednesday fan. The bigger problem is having a Famous Fans section in the first place. Such people, except in notable circumstances, have no relevance towards a football club - see this peer review for the Everton F.C. article.

He has mentioned he 'supports' both Sheffield clubs, in that he wants both to do well. This is mentioned in the article.

League History

That table under League history outlining what division the club participated in each season & how many seasons spent at each tier is excellent. Someone should do this for all English/Scottish clubs. Kenallen (talk) 15:17, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Crest and mascots

The article claims to show an image of the original crest. It also states 'the sheaves of Sheffield (Sheaf field) were shown at either side of the owl's head,' but these do not appear on the crest as depicted. The text and the original crest image can't both be right.

Origin of name

"The club was a cricket club when it formed in 1820 as The Wednesday Cricket Club headed by Gerald Hamilton of Leigh, Lancashire (named after the day of the week when they played their matches, which was Thursdays)."

Famous fans section

I removed a list of Famous fans a couple of times, but the edits were undone. Aside from the problems with many of the inclusions not being referenced, I don't believe that such a list is particularly encyclopaedic, and seems to place undue weight onto people who have had little to no impact on the club and its history. It could be considered that such a list is trivia. Though it may be relevant to the David Blunkett article to note that he is a Wednesday supporter, I can't see what relevance this has on the club's article. If these sections were to be included in all club articles, the articles for the best-supported clubs (e.g. Man Utd, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, etc.) would be swamped with names of famous supporters. If an individual has made a notable involvement with a club (e.g. Robbie Williams or Norman Cook who own stakes in Port Vale and Brighton, respectively, Richard Attenborough was Life President at Chelsea, etc.) then that could be worth including, but merely expressing preference for a team is not a significant thing. URGENT: Need to change club crest

Hi guys,

Mark here from the press office at Sheffield Wednesday.

The crest that is displaying on the Sheffield Wednesday wiki page is incorrect. It is very close but not quite right (The way the Owl sits on the branch is where it differs.)

The SWFC chairman has requested it to be changed to the one I will add as a picture captioned "SWFC official club crest as of 2016".

Can this be done asap please?

Hi @Mark ruane: the original image you've uploaded to commons is likely to be deleted as copyrighted work can't be uploaded there. Instead I've uploaded the new badge with a better file description here File:Sheffield Wednesday crest from 2016.jpg including fair use rationale for this article etc. and placed this in the infobox. Modern Highs and Lows Section

In this section the title was immediately followed by a sentence detailing the club's "highest" run.... but nothing about the "lowest". I have therefore balanced the sentence up, and reflected the meaning of the title, by adding contrasting information about the Clubs lowest run.

Nickname

Sheffield United did not adopt Wednesday's old nickname as suggested. There is no evidence or mention of the nickname until both clubs existed and they were both often referred to as the Blades, until Wednesday moved to Owlerton and a newspaper article referred to them as the Owls. Wednesday did not receive their nickname from the area Owlerton, rather it was taken from a lucky mascot Owl, this is explained in numerous SWFC history books. Another animal was used earlier but did not bring luck. The area of Sheffield is not pronounced OWL-erton anyway, it is OLL-erton. On your Blades point, sports teams from Sheffield were known as Blades because of Sheffield's history with steel.
