Plans for Additions to Article[edit]

We plan to add some historical context to this article about the mafia’s origins in Sicily and why Mussolini felt the need to eradicate them. Between the second and third paragraphs, based on the article Weak States by Acemoglu, we will add three reasons as to why a successful campaign to overthrow the Sicilian Mafia would be beneficial to Mussolini and his regime. Firstly, we’d highlight Sicily as a weak state post unification with Italy and discuss how the mafia filled in the power void left by the traditional structures like police and government due to their ineffectiveness. To build on that we would also discuss how they gradually became involved in political and law enforcement structures as they were hired by politicians who systematically used the crime syndicate against political and social opponents (peasant fasci, socialists, and republicans). The Sicilian citizens saw the Mafia as a threat to their community, however with the Mafia’s political influence it was difficult to control them. If Mussolini’s campaign successfully destroyed the Mafia, he would gain immense support, being seen as the only one able to abolish the corrupt group. In light of our changes we would also add a brief overview of our edits (how the Sicilian Mafia undermined Mussolini’s power and how he would benefit from eradicating them) to the introduction so that it has an accurate description of what the article will contain.
