Band name[edit]

The band is not "The Skids" it's "Skids". What a fundamental error. All references and related pages should be changed. -- Robin726 13:27, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No it's not a "fundamental error", it's nitpicking. While I'm aware of other bands like "Pixies" having the same error, there are instance where they refer to themselves as both.--MacRusgail 14:00, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Their official website is also http://www.theskids.com/
So the website has got it wrong too, is that any reason to follow suit? Maybe the other domain name was not available? Maybe they are too slack to be consistent? It is not nitpicking to want to get someone's name right in an authoritative encyclopedia, even if it might sometimes be used in error elsewhere. Look at any one of their record sleeves to see the correct way to write their name. Sheesh! Robin726 17:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Has anyone ever heard of Skids originally being called SS Kids and having to change their name? So I was told by a friend years ago, but I don't know if there's any truth in that (shocking the parents and all) or him just bullshitting me as a riff off things like the original/controversial Days in Europa cover and the Skids logo (as seen on the cover of their first single). Hope I'm not starting an urban legend! Idontcareanymore (talk) 07:16, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The band's official Facebook page is also called The Skids. Manormadman (talk) 12:43, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

30th Anniversary Gigs[edit]

Should something should be said on the page about the 3 gigs for their 30th celebration? Being the 4th and 5th July at Glen Pavilion in Dunfermline, and the 7th, at T in the Park festival. Line up - Jobson, Baillie, Simpson with Bruce Watson of Big Country, and his son Jamie, on guitars and Jane Button and Brian Jobson on backing vocals. Honey power 00:24, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, give it a paragraph of its own. Not the original line-up, but with a nod to Adamson anyway. --MacRusgail 15:23, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Line-up Changes[edit]

In my view, the info box coverage of the band's line-up changes does not need to detail every session musician that ever recorded with the band. However, if others think this information is significant, perhaps a new section in the career biography section should be created? Yozzer66 (talk) 17:37, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Past members[edit]

The band's official website lists eleven "Original and Main Members of the Skids":

  • Stuart Adamson
  • Bill Simpson
  • Richard Jobson
  • Tom Kellichan
  • JJ Johnson
  • Mike Baillie
  • Russell Webb
  • Alistair Moore
  • Rusty Egan
  • Kenny Hyslop
  • Bruce Watson

Unless somebody comes up with a credible reference to the contary, I suggest that we accept this list as difinitive. Yozzer66 (talk) 20:30, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Accuracy is the only goal here. Looking at the "official site" the first thing that jumps out as incorrect is the Alistair Moore info box. It states that he played keyboards on Days in Europa album and tour. He didn't play on the albums studio recording, Bill Nelson and Stuart Adamson played the keyboards on it. Nelson is never even mentioned. I could give you more? This is a fundamental mistake and this alone forces you to question the accuracy of their research. There have been times before when the "Past Members" box has been expanded to include temporary members, but the people at Wikipedia have complained about the length of it. There are two distinct types of musicians who played with The Skids, permanent and temporary ones. There were only ever six permanent band members (Richard Jobson, Stuart Adamson, William Simpson, Thomas Kellichan, Russell Webb & Mike Baillie).

Here's a list of all the permanent and temporary musicians who played with The Skids:

Richard Jobson, Stuart Adamson, William Simpson, Thomas Kellichan, Chris Jenkins, David Batchelor, Rusty Egan, Bill Nelson, Russell Webb, Mike Baillie, Jude Nettleton, Julius Newell, Andrew Sigsworth, John Sigsworth, Alison Pipkin, David Pipkin, Hannah Yeadon, Esther Marshall, Chloe Dymott, Marlis Dunklau, Gracie Benson, Sally Nettleton, Harriet Bakewell, Mary Volke, Derek Wadsworth, J J Johnson, Paul Wishart, Alan Darby, Mike Oldfield, Dave Duncan, Tim Cross, Alan Rankine, Billy MacKenzie, Ken Locke, Virginia Astley, Kenny Hyslop, Frances Lynch, Nicky Holland, Debbie Mitchell, Nick Griffiths, Carey Taylor, Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Bruce Watson, Jamie Watson, Jane Button, Brian Jobson

You appear to be very certain of your facts and I have no reason to doubt your sincerity. However, facts without appropriate referencing are not very useful when editing Wikipedia articles. You need to provide proof in the form of citations that are capable of being checked by other editors. Until you (or other editors) are able to do this, the official website seems the best starting point. Good luck with your research. Yozzer66 (talk) 17:53, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a look at the original vinyl album sleeves, and/or http://www.geocities.com/intothevalley/itv.html for the facts. You may also want to read the text in the "Career" section on "The Skids" wiki page. I agree that in theory the official website should be the best starting point. It seems inconceivable that such a site could get some of the facts wrong, but sadly they have. The site also lacks a lot of detail. I think the "Past Members" box should have only the permanent band members, or permanent and temporary members combined. At the moment it's not one thing or the other.

Here are the the band line-ups for their four studio albums:

Personnel for Scared to Dance[edit]

With:

Personnel for Days in Europa[edit]

With:

Second Version (Re-mixed) ONLY

  • Thomas Kellichan — drums on "Masquerade" ONLY

Personnel for The Absolute Game[edit]

With:

  • Mick Glossop — producer

Personnel for Joy[edit]

I maybe missing something but I've looked at http://www.geocities.com/intothevalley/itv.html and I can't find any detailed information on the band's membership. Also, you tell me "to read the text in the 'Career' section on 'The Skids' wiki page" for further evidence of your claims. However, an article can not cite itself as a source for information. Appropriate, independent sources should be used and properly referenced. Without this practice, unscrupulous editors could claim all sorts of ridiculous things! Of course, I don't doubt your sincerity but 'facts' should be backed up. All the best. Yozzer66 (talk) 17:23, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you are missing something. This site ( http://www.geocities.com/intothevalley/itv.html ) also threw me at first, because the homepage address never changes when you click through links on this site. Here's how to navigate to the reference information needed. Click on "Song lyrics". You will then see images of the four The Skids studio albums (Days in Europa, Scared to Dance, The Absolute Game & Joy). Click on one of the album images were you will then see the track listing, lyrics, and at the bottom the musicians who played on that album. All the information has been taken from the original first generation album sleeves and meticulously transcribed. The info is all present and correct apart from one missing credit from The Days in Europa album. The one for keyboards by Bill Nelson, although his Producer credit is there. You will have to find an original album sleeve or a scanned image to check that one. It's in a four page booklet which went inside the album sleeve with the record. Probably most copies of it would have been lost by now (the album is nearly 30 years old), but when I get access to my original copy again, I'll scan it and send it to you.

Thanks. That was very useful. I have made amendments (with cites) to the article based upon the conclusions of this discussion. Please feel free to find a better form of words. Look foward to future collaborations. Yozzer66 (talk) 20:53, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was a pleasure. I have one PS though, there are two and not the one piece of information lost in transcription from http://www.geocities.com/intothevalley/itv.html . There is no mention that Kenny Hyslop plays drums on the song Fields from the Joy album instead of J J Johnson .

7deacons (talk) 21:49, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eeek. Not the same J. J. Johnson - surely !!
Derek R Bullamore (talk) 21:55, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Re-Hyslop on drums. Both Strong, author of the "Great Indie Discography", and Joynson, author of "Up Yours! A Guide to UK Punk, New Wave & Early Post Punk", claim Hyslop played drums on the "Fields" single. Of course, just because JJ Johnson played on the same track for the album doesn't make this claim untrue. A Single rarely used the same recording as the album track of the same name. Indeed, singles tended to be recorded as 'live' tracks in the studio, whereas with album tracks each contributor was recorded seperately and then added to the mix. Hope this helps. Yozzer66 (talk) 14:59, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kenny Hyslop[edit]

In http://www.kinemagigz.com/'s'.htm#The%20Skids , I read Kenny Hyslop replaced Mike Baillie, but he only recorded the "Iona" single, and later left, by the time Stuart Adamson left. I think Hyslop wasn't a mid-member, like Egan, who was destined to be with the band briefly. Probably he was actually a full-time member, but he quit.Francodamned (talk) 20:47, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Jobson interview[edit]

Not sure how long this BBC Radio 6 interview of Richard Jobson by Steve Lamacq (almost 2 hours in) will be available but it could be used for citations for existing material in the article and to supplement it with new material. It's largely about Scared to Dance but also about the band in general. Mutt Lunker (talk) 18:23, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
