On Notability[edit]

Notability must be demonstrated for any organization, per WP:NCORP (see also WP:GNG). An article that is nearly entirely sourced from the official website or press releases doesn't demonstrate notability, and runs the risk of appearing simply promotional: Wikipedia should not simply be a reiteration of the SDGC website nor rehash trivia such as a change in logo. I'm not saying this article should be deleted immediately, but it needs secondary, non-trivial sources. A organization with 300 members that is not national in scope suggests an unbiased look at notability is warranted, and if I am proved wrong or misguided, I willy happily accept that. Below are some guideline excerpts, meant only to encourage better, neutral content on Wikipedia.

Per WP:ORGIND:

A primary test of notability is whether people independent of the subject itself (or its manufacturer, creator, or vendor) have actually considered the company, corporation, product or service notable enough that they have written and published non-trivial, non-routine works that focus upon it.

Per WP:ORGDEPTH:

The depth of coverage of the subject by the source must be considered. If the depth of coverage is not substantial, then multiple independent sources should be cited to establish notability. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject is not sufficient to establish notability.

Deep coverage provides an organization with a level of attention that extends well beyond routine announcements and makes it possible to write more than a very brief, incomplete stub about an organization

If you have access to a public or university library, go fetch a copy of Brooker (2013) mentioned in the notes and read it. The org is notable despite its small size. And if you fetch a copy of How to Create a Portfolio & Get Hired you’ll find that both it and the GDC are listed. And the RGD (i.e., the biggest org of the three) is not listed.
And of course I should not even be doing this. I’m supposed to be working on my thesis, not on Wikipedia…—Al12si (talk) 18:01, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Animalparty: I came back after a two-year lapse and I’m still seeing this notability note—this note is just beyond ridiculous. SDGQ is the only graphic design association in the entire country that actually supports French-speaking Canadians. Anyone who thinks SDGQ is not notable has no business touching any article that has anything to do with Canada.—al12si (talk) 06:53, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
