Another Believer, would Category:Restaurants by cuisine make sense? Valereee (talk) 14:22, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Valereee Of course! See also: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 October 15 ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:46, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Another Believer, ah, thanks! I think Category:Restaurants by ethnicity is kind of a problem. "Ethnic cuisine" is a relative term. A Polish restaurant in Poland isn't an "ethnic" restaurant, but it is a restaurant serving Polish cuisine.
Do you think this is something that needs discussion somewhere, or could we just open the category? I'm no expert in the policies governing categories. Valereee (talk) 14:57, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hm...I tried to add it, but it's not appearing in the right place at Category:Restaurants; it's showing up under R instead of with the other 'restaurants by' categories. Do you know what I did wrong? Valereee (talk) 15:14, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Valereee (edit conflict) I don't really love "Ethnic restaurants" either. I'd prefer just Category:Restaurants by cuisine which would allow subcategories like Category:Chinese cuisine or Category:Pacific Northwest cuisine. Based on our current structure, I suppose Category:Ethnic restaurants would be a subcategory of Category:Restaurants by cuisine (?) More discussion required. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:14, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think yes, at least for now, but honestly I'm not sure we shouldn't just move pretty much completely away from "ethnic cuisine" altogether, eventually. It's just kind of inaccurate. Is American cuisine ethnic? I imagine it would seem that way in Tokyo. Valereee (talk) 15:16, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know if you propose something somewhere. I'm kind of tired of all the resistance I get working on restaurant stuff on Wikipedia. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:18, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
