This article was the subject of an educational assignment in 2013 Q1. Further details were available on the "Education Program:University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)/146B (Spring 2013)" page, which is now unavailable on the wiki.
The beginning of this article needs to be re-written. As noted at MOS:LEAD, the lead section should define the topic and summarize the article. Right now, the section makes several statements not referenced in the article body; and phrases such as "robber barons" should not be used outside of direct quotes because they are not neutral.
