Info about the circumstances of the English dubbed version

It would be good to see further incorporation of some of the material available online as to the circumstances of the show's English-language versions, though the article shouldn't turn into a fan site type of thing... it could be nonetheless valuable to have a little about the tiny amount Fernandez and the others were paid (and the fact that one of the actors was actually sharing the salary of another), how Fernandez arrived at his versions, the fact that (if I recall correctly) they didn't get royalties, etc. It would take me a while to collect all this and properly edit it, so if someone else can do it on the fly, that would be a useful addition. To Whom It May Concern:

Personally, I remember seeing the American version of Speed Racer a LOT sooner than cited in this entry. I can swear to it being on television at least back when I was in the fifth grade, if not earlier.

That would put its original Trans-Lux syndication airdate circa 1972-1973 instead of the 1981-1982 cited in the openning paragraph of the entry, unless the author meant something else by that specific 1981-1982 reference.

Also (if it matters) the NOW Comics adaptation at one point said that the G on Speed Racer's shirt was actually a monogram for his "true" first name: Greg. Should I make the necessary changes myself, or would you like to varify them first?

Production replica cars

Some time between 1998 and 2000 an auto production company built a sport car that looked exactly like the Mach 5 and sold a few thousand of them for about US$51,000. Does anyone have a link to their site (assuming that the company still exists)? Speed Racer and Mach Go Go Go

• As much as the "Speed Racer" adaptation has a following in its own right, I strongly feel that there should be a separate article discussing the original Japanese series. There's a large amount of information on the original that could possibly be lost or misinterpreted if all of the focus is on the redubbed version. Mach 5 Basis?

The mach-V itself seems to look a LOT like the Chaparral 2D Race Car '67 (made around the same time as the series AFAIK). Next Generation not canon?

Just because the original creator isn't involved, doesn't mean the show isn't canon. Speed Racer Enterprises and Lionsgate are overseeing the story, so it COULD be. We'll never know until the show is out. Triple entendre

Mach Go Go Go is more than a triple entendre. Whoever wrote the current bit seems to have been unaware that the "Mach 5" would be called "maha go go" in Japanese, and seems to have made some speculations about the title.

More specifically, the second Go is an honorific suffix. It's used in the same way as -san or -chan, except -go is reserved for vehicles. Japanese honorifics don't translate, so they're usually either left as-is or dropped in English. The correct translation of the title is either "Mach 5-go, Go!" or simply "Mach 5, Go!" It's not exactly an honorific. It's an ordinal suffix, so the car's name is actually "Mach Number 5". Ordinal suffixes are normally pronounced and translated into English. This translation is an unusual exception. But the name would still be read as "Mah ha go gou" by a Japanese. A similar case is the Robot Anime "Gigantor". In Japanese, it was called 鉄人２８号 and pronounced as "tetsujin niju hachi gou" (Iron Man number 28). Can anyone provide a source for the claim that "The Trick Race" episode was selected by TV Guide as one of the most memorable moments in television history? This is widely quoted across the WWW (probably because it appears here on wikipedia!) but I cannot confirm it. The standard procedure is to roll back to a version previous to the addtion, then write the facts *in your own words*, citing the site as source of the information. Attn: fellow editors. I've restored the copyvio tag from 2008-05-01. Of the artasylum site's 20 odd sentence "Background" text on the history of Speed Racer, this page shows 16 similar sentences. These phrases and sentences are verbatim:

Westernization of their characters' physical appearance?

The entire section that talks about how the characters seem "western" in looks seems not only filled with logic that is flawed, but perhaps even a little racists. Red "M" against white background on Racer X's chest?

I am surprised there is no mention in the article re. Racer X's outfit, esp. that there is a large, red M against a white background on his chest that looks to be a similar or the same style font as the red M against the white hood of the Mach 5. This is especially intriguing given that the family's name in Japanese starts w/a "M". Undue emphasis

This article has a strange and undue emphasis on the English language translations of the manga, which are certainly worth a mention in the article as a whole... but at the moment, they take up most of the intro, and are discussed in depth before the original manga itself is discussed. This is placing them well out of proportion in their importance in the place of Speed Racer in English-language culture, much less the world. Could someone edit this?
