Origin of name[edit]

Does anybody know who the "Spencer" of Spencer Dock is? Thanks. JS 86.42.151.149 09:18, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

the name dates from the construction of the sea lock for the Royal Canal in the 19th century, thats all I know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.134.141.187 (talk) 21:42, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Toponymy[edit]

In a nutshell I am minded ambiguities are arising with regard to Spencer Dock because the original dock complex was based north of the Sheriff Street Bridge whereas the modern Spencer Dock settlement area, which is what the article is currently about, is centered round the central square adjacent to the Luas stop. Hope to use (Shepherd, 1994) to source some of this. If I get anything wrong well feel free to discuss / correct with sources. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 10:08, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Very good, thanks! I dug out my Bacon's Town Plan, and must correct slightly what I said on the Project page - as you note here, Spencer Dock used to run from Sheriff Street Bridge to Newcomen Bridge at North Strand. Above that was considered regular canal, while below that, between Sheriff Street and the sea lock, was the element known as the Royal Canal Docks. I would agree that the locus shifted during property development, while I do believe that the article should cover both. It is interesting to be reminded of the old docks - from the Old Dock right beside the Custom House, George's Dock and Inner Dock, and the huge Alexandra Basin. Interestingly, the naming of the original Spencer Drawbridge, and the location of the memorial plaques, may suggest that Spencer Dock did once, as I had previously recalled, extend from riverside to North Strand, and was perhaps divided later. The challenge with the modern naming is going to be that it has no formal definition. But the article can definitely improve anyway; good luck! SeoR (talk) 12:36, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@SeoR I've read this properly after making a a bunch of edits, reading it first would have been better. I like your your assessment the locus shifted during redevelopment ... a marketing super-win but I am skeptical about stuff at times. From your input am I seeing (perhaps more accurately guessing) that the basin that most would now see as "Spencer Dock" was actually the old "Royal Canal Docks". The setup of a sea lock, followed by a large basin to allow queueing, followed by the Sheriff Street Bridge, which was probably/possibly the last downstream roadbridge at that time (1870s), Thanks again! Article development[edit]

Some may not I pulled a load of revisions from the article being done under a {{Under construction}}/not ready banner. This to a degree was because I was feeling my way through ambiguities and uncertainties. And due to saga's elsewhere & RL there was real danger the Under construction could be permanently removed under a not ready state. To my mind the key gemstone out of all that was c:File:Spencer Dock 1893 from insurance plan map.tiff which gives some online sourced authoriry to how the article can be written. In a nutshell my intention is to re-work it up again but without a {{Under construction}} but with incremental improvements that I leave at any time. I'm expecting to do a couple of edits to get the WP:Settlement structure back in place and a little on bridges. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 13:25, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to ack Financefactz as (I think if I'm not mistake) it was spotting their addition to of the Insurance maps to Dublin Landings that was the inspiration towards c:File:Spencer Dock 1893 from insurance plan map.tiff (they might be saying if its wasn't for ....), if I do make improvements to this article and its relations its building on the others work and their inputs.
