If we read Fujitsu's explanation:

taggered spin-up is a simple mechanism by which the storage subsystem controller can sequence hard disk drive initialization and spin-up

we have that 'spin up' can't refer to a 'period of time' but to an action performed by the disk (probably, the acceleration of its platters from a stopped state to an operational speed)

So this article should be corrected. I don't know what the initialization stage is so I'm not editing the article myself but I'd love to have an explanation of these different phases.

Not sure why it says western digital[edit]

The sentence

With Western Digital hard disk drives, Pin 11 of the SATA Power Interface controls whether Staggered Spin-Up (SSU) is enabled or not. Pin 11 is also used as an activity LED connection.

seems to indicate that pin 11 is exclusive to western digital. However it is part of the sata power connector, and I think it's also used by seagate. It is confusing because SSU is being used as the name of the original pin 11 method and also as the general concept of not spinning the disk until told, which includes PUIS and the pin11 method. So SSU is PUIS and... SSU. That, in addition to the usage of western digital in that sentence, makes you think it could be talking about PUIS. It's also confusing because of the fact that both methods can be activated by some pins, although PUIS/PM2 ones are in the hard drive (3-4 in western) and SSU pin is pin11 of the sata power connector.
