Remove 3rd ERV link?[edit]

The 3rd Edinburgh Rifle Volunteers F.C. were moribund after 1878 because half of the players had joined the Edinburgh Swifts instead. St Bernard's drew one player from the Volunteers, but I cannot find any more; indeed the Saints drew two from the Edina side. I'm not sure there is any link at all, other than the regiment used to be based near Stockbridge and the Saints later had a similar kit - these seem to be coincidences as the Volunteers never played football at Stockbridge.

And, of course, the two clubs overlapped in their histories; there are reports of St Bernard's matches from 1876, while the Volunteers were still going strong.

So am proposing to remove the erroneous 3rd ERV material, other than a much shorter debunking para/footnote. In Vitrio (talk) 16:37, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is a case of WP:BOLD, your contributions are always very well researched so I can't see anyone challenging it. I'm a bit surprised that this mistake was made in the first place as it seems quite obvious that they are separate entities. I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that there was a connection but that has been well and truly debunked. Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 17:29, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks, will do so. Am getting increasingly of the view that the 3rd ERV split was down to the players wanting to play Hibernian while the hierarchy did not, found a source backing that up. In Vitrio (talk) 09:07, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
