Population[edit]

The population figure which was reinstated relates to the parish of Ansty & Staplefield, formally Cuckfield Rural. It is not the population of Staplefield. (By the way, the citation is a broken link). I can see that it has been made technically correct with the addition of the "less than" sign, but does that make it useful? ++ MortimerCat (talk) 07:29, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I see your point, but these are the only census figures available for the village, so at least it gives an approximation of size. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Snapper five (talkcontribs) 12:59, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Its not an approximation, it is an upper limit. The actual population of Staplefield is around 440. My point is that a quick glance at <1574 gives a misleading impression of its size. What we really need is a definitive source for the village population. nb My figure comes from the Parish plan [1] "Staplefield Ward contains 28% of the electorate" ++ MortimerCat (talk) 02:12, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was not aware of that document, but you're right, we can calculate approximately 440 from 28% x 1574, so that is a much better estimate. I have updated the figure with both sources and this discussion can serve as the source for the calculation.Snapper five (talk) 16:05, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To be pedantic, 28% relates to the ward, not the village. Also, it refers to the electorate, not the population. We are using the assumption the adult-child ratio is consistent throughout the parish. 440 will suffice for now, but we will need an actual figure before we get FA status. ++ MortimerCat (talk) 07:17, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
