México (state)State of Mexico - First of all it has an accent, and the English language has no accents, second of all, I don't know who named the article but the name is ambiguous, everyone knows it under the name of State of Mexico (Estado de México in Spanish), precisely so I wouldn't be confused with the name of the country, therefore the name of the article should be State of Mexico, in fact everything within the article (but the title) uses that name, thank you. Supaman89 19:10, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I gotta agree with this. I know the other states are not named "State of..." but they do not need to be distinguised from the name of the country the way the State of Mexico does. Thelmadatter 19:21, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. It's the English version of the official name and doesn't seem to have ever been the official name of the country of Mexico. — AjaxSmack 21:50, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How much time does it have to pass before someone changes the title? is it within a week? Supaman89 01:39, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Depends... If there is no obvious consensus, then I would allow 5 days to a week to see if a consensus develops. However, if the consensus seems to be clear, then a day or two might suffice. It depends on whether an admin considers the proposed move to be obvious commonsense and uncontroversial or debatable and possibly controversial. See WP:SNOW and Requested moves. I could do it now but I'll wait a day or two to see if anybody objects.

work done on the State of Mexico page[edit]

Students from the Advanced B English class at ITESM Campus Toluca class have extensively expanded this article, adding a lot of goo information. However, the article does need editing work (spelling, grammar, paragraph formation etc). One citation is missing. I will give them a day to work on this, however, any suggestions for improvement are welcome.Thelmadatter 14:45, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have done some initial cleanup. Is it your intent that other Wikipedians simply cleanup any issues or do you prefer that they be pointed out for your students to fix themselves? The latter approach is a lot more work than just fixing the problems as they are identified. Perhaps you could suggest to your students that they go back and review the article a few days to a week after they make their edits. This could be frustrating if their edits are completely deleted. If that happens, have them ask a mentor to look into why that happened.
I have deleted only one piece of text, the one that asserted "Mexicas=Aztecas" which is not technically true although many people may think that. The Mexica were only the ruling group in the Aztec empire. There were many other groups subjugated by the Mexica to form the Aztec empire. See the Mexica and Aztec articles for more details. Also see the Aztec codices article for more information about the codices. In particular, see my comment on Talk:Aztec codices asking for help correlating the codices mentioned in this article with those mentioned in that article.
--Richard 16:40, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I dont expect you all to grade this like a teacher would, just some general comments on formatting and organization, readability and/or understandability would be nice so that students can see what the norms are and how they are applied. I will have groups go over sections that they did not create for the more minute editing (grammar spelling etc). I know some sections are easier to understand than others.Thelmadatter 19:53, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this Talk Page is the right place to comment on grammar, spelling, etc. If the discussion is not about the article content, then it doesn't belong here.

I would have put my comments on a team's Talk Page but it seems that multiple teams are working on this article and so it was unclear where the comments should go.

For this reason, I have put my comments on a new page.

--Richard 01:10, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

wow, quite impressive Richard! Wanna be an English teacher? <GRIN> I am more concerned about content, organization and understandability than grammar per se. I would like students to see how "real" (not teacher) readers perceive their work. Your comments are quite good for this.Thelmadatter 14:57, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you still working in the page Thelmadatter? Or is over and open to add more content? cuellared (talk) 10:45, 29 november 2007

The Advanced B class that was working on this page is over. My school asked me to do a similar class with teachers here who need to improve their TOEFL scores... so Im sure we will be back to this page.. it still needs work. However, edit away! I know there are a lot of little errors... Im cleaning up my students' final projects (you know the little stuff you'd never expect a non-native speaker to know). If you like, go to Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Mentors and volunteer to help my new students in January!Thelmadatter (talk) 19:48, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

mexico state vs state of mexico[edit]

Why is this under Mexico State and not State of Mexico? The move discussion above was to move it to State of Mexico wasn't it? I think Mexico State sounds awful, and a google search shows that State of Mexico is much more common. -Solid Reign (talk) 05:21, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All of the American States are known as "State of" in their articles, above their infoboxes. Solid Reign (talk) 15:45, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just answered you in your talkpage, regards. Supaman89 (talk) 23:07, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Detail:
the name of the entire federation is not "Mexico", it is "United Mexican States", and the mexican constitution says it, and it also says in its 43° article, that officialy, the name of the state is "Mexico". Remembering a little, first, the Aztecs found Tenochtitlan, then they created a city-state, next an empire (Mexica) that was conformed by the actual states of Oaxaca, Michoacan, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla, Guerrero, Veracruz, Mexico, Federal District and parts of Queretaro, Guanajuato, Chiapas, and the region of Soconusco; they were conquered and reorganized as the Kigdom of Mexico, with the Borbonic Reforms it turned into the General Intendence of Arms and Provinces of Mexico, federalism came and it turned an state (without the territories of the actual states of Oaxaca, Michoacan, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Chiapas, Veracruz and the Federal District), finally, it was divided into Morelos, Hidalgo and Guerrero. Actually, all the other states have never been "Mexico", they had other names and identities, like: New Galicia, New Santander, New Leon, New Vizcaya, Mayans, Olmecs, etc.,etc. --Ivylooy8540 (talk) 07:00, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move January 2011[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

State of MexicoMéxico (state) — First: All other states in Category:States of Mexico that have an accent in Spanish have that in the article title. Second: None of the others uses the longer form, therefore that one should not. Third: State of Mexico, could be mistaken, e.g. compare: State of the United States refers to any of the states of the United States. Forth: If it is for disambiguation than the word "state" should be added following normal disambiguation rules. --TopoChecker (talk) 00:28, 16 January 2011 (UTC) [reply]

:* Would be ok for me. But I think for the whole country one would write Mexico (country) as for Georgia (country). No idea why the two above examples has "U.S." in the disambiguator. TopoChecker (talk) 09:30, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Why does it contain "US" because "state" itself is ambiguous, since "state" also means "country"... hence also the situation with Mexico. For example, failed states are failed countries, not failed provinces. "state" means "country" most of the time. 65.93.14.196 (talk) 12:57, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

:::Would support México (Mexican state) if México (state) fails. But I think that still would be flawed, since the dab term could mean the Mexican state as a country, that wouldn't clarify much then. But at least let's use proper dab with "(...something...)". TopoChecker (talk) 03:08, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose The proposal doesn't really appear to have been properly thought out. The format State of Placename is just as acceptable as Placename (state), in the same way that we frequently use City of Placename or Republic of Placename. The proposer doesn't appear to be able to grasp this, judging from his/her comment above. Skinsmoke (talk) 16:40, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

State of MexicoState of México — Consensus at the last discussion was not to change the disambiguation, but I think it's clear from the most recent discussion above that the diacritic should be included. Please don't discuss any other form of move in this discussion, to avoid confusing matters. Thanks. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 20:42, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We keep running into this question again and again. I agree that the state's name is problematic for foreigners, but that is simply because it shares its name with the country in general. The article for the country is named Mexico as it should because that is the English name for it. There really is no "English name" for this state, as most people do not know it exists. Hell, I didnt before I went to work in Toluca. In Mexico, the state's official name is simply "México," but to distinguish it from the name of the country (and hell, Mexico City (which is often just called "México" too)), the term "Estado de México" is used. This translates to "State of Mexico" or "Mexico State." I sincerely doubt that putting an accent mark on "Mexico" is going to clarify anything to anybody. Although a redirect from "Estado de México" might be helpful. In Spanish Wikipedia, the article is named es:Estado de México. I understand "state" can be interpreted as "country" but not in a place name.Thelmadatter (talk) 21:19, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is already a redirect from Estado de México (as there should be), as well as Estado de Mexico. It's going to be difficult to find evidence of common usage one way or the other for this name. Subjectively, I prefer the fully English "State of Mexico" over the mixed "State of México", but if there is evidence that the latter is the more common usage in English, we should go with it. Ucucha 21:23, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just did a quick google search and Im coming up with "State of Mexico" with no accent mark.Thelmadatter (talk) 21:28, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's also what I see in Google Books. There are some instances of "the present state of Mexico" and "a neighboring state of Mexico City", but it's not as bad as I had expected. In conclusion, oppose. Ucucha 21:31, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Federal District is no more called a state than Washington D.C. is.Thelmadatter (talk) 15:28, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The editor from IP 65.94.45.238 has it right. Moreover, the accent is just not ever used for things called "Mexico" in English. Gavia immer (talk) 04:43, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

State of MexicoMéxico (Mexican state) — Request of January 2001 improperly closed. Use accents as for all other Mexican states that have one. Use standard disambiguation with "()", like Chihuahua (state) and Hidalgo (state) use "()". Compare Georgia (U.S. state), Amazonas (Brazilian state), Amazonas (Venezuelan state). --Chihuahua State (talk) 07:14, 1 March 2011 (UTC) [reply]

The #Requested move January 2011 was not closed properly, as pointed out at User_talk:Born2cycle#M.C3.A9xico_.28state.29. Majority agreed to use "Me(é)xico (Mexican state)". Furthermore all other Mexican states with accent, do use the accent, see Michoacán, Nuevo León, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Yucatán. Chihuahua State (talk) 07:15, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Important notice - Nominator was blocked as a disruptive sockpuppet [1]. He seemed to be moving and renaming several articles just to create animosity. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 00:34, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. English usage is universally "Mexico", without the accent mark, for anything with that name. This has not changed in the past few months, so these repeated nominations are frankly disruptive. Gavia immer (talk) 14:08, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Of course this is disruptive - "disrupting" the bad situation. No single other Mexican state is named "State of" and no single other Mexican state that has an accent in Spanish has it taken off in English. You may file complaints with the ones that installed the current name in the first place. Chihuahua State (talk) 16:17, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose This again??????? We've had this discussion various times. There was no majority for "México (Mexican state)" in January or February. The official name of the state (as per the constitution is "México." That's not workable in English for obvious reasons. To distinguish the state from the country (and hell from Mexico City) it is called "Estado de México" (often shortened to EdoMex). Other Mexican states are not good examples. Even in Spanish, Edomex is signaled differently for disambiguation purposes. Use "Estado de México" or "State of Mexico" but dont mix English and Spanish. Accents tend to be used on words not considered part of the English language (which is why Mexico as the country name is not accented). Michoacán takes an accent because it is not known. but like Amakuru, I dont like the use of them either. Using "México" will not make anything clearer because most readers will see the country name. Granted "State of Mexico" does not make the distinction clearer for most first time readers, but at least it follows a recognized pattern of "State of _______ (like State of New York)" and it follows the way that Mexicans distinguish the state from the country.Thelmadatter (talk) 19:35, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • If anything, use Estado de México, since that is the common usage, per WP:COMMONNAME. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 19:43, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Title conventions state that whatever is most commonly used should guide. Google "State of Mexico" vs "Estado de México" and see what you get.Thelmadatter (talk) 01:33, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
3.5 million hits for Estado de México, against 600,000 for State of Mexico. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 01:41, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But those hits are for Spanish language sites. You need to Google "State of Mexico" to find anything in English about the state.Thelmadatter (talk) 01:48, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Oppose - The official name of this particular state in Spanish is Estado de México, which translates literally as "State of Mexico". Using "Mexico/México (state)" is confussing and needless. Nobody in Spanish says "I'm going to Mexico" (meaning the state), they say "I'm going to the State of Mexico", so State of Mexico is a great translated title. Removing the word "million"[edit]

I am removing the word "million" from the infobox footnote on the state's GDP and from the item in the infobox to which it refers. Including that word must have been a mistake. "796,426,291 million pesos" equals 796,426,291,000,000 pesos, which is more than 796 trillion pesos. That is far too large a number for the GDP of one state and probably even more than the GDP for the whole world.--Jim10701 (talk) 23:36, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Change title of article/page[edit]

State of MexicoMexico (Mexican state) – I previously suggested moving this article to Mexico (state), but it was not moved. I am suggesting Mexico (Mexican state) because on the previous move request, one of you suggested that title. Please let me know what you think of this title. If you don't like the title I'm suggesting, feel free to suggest a different title. 2601:183:101:58D0:A8D9:58B9:CEF0:6CB9 (talk) 11:27, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. This is a problem solution looking for a solution problem. There is nothing wrong with the current title. —  AjaxSmack  15:37, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think maybe you mean "solution looking for a problem"... Bearcat (talk) 00:39, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think you may be right. I think I have oatmeal for brains.  AjaxSmack  23:55, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Things on Wikipedia are titled with their WP:COMMONNAME, not necessarily their official one. The reason this doesn't have to conform to the same naming standard as the three U.S. states that have disambiguated titles is that actual usage doesn't work the same way for them as it does for this. In normal usage, the US states of Georgia, New York and Washington are referred to just by their names alone whenever possible, and as "X State" (not "State of X") only when it's necessary to distinguish them from the city or foreign country that they happen to be name-twinned with — but because the state under discussion here shares its name with that of its own country, it can almost never be referred to as just Mexico alone, and the usual real-world usage for it in English is "State of Mexico" rather than "Mexico State". (I'm sure the latter probably also exists in some cases, although a Google search for it disappears behind usages like New Mexico State University and New Mexico State Guard and it's quite verifiably less common than "State of Mexico" is.) So real-world usage dictates how we should disambiguate this — and the indications are that it's already located at the usual real-world usage. We can't have blanket "one size fits all" rules that apply exactly the same way across the board, because one size doesn't fit all in reality — each situation has to be evaluated on its own merits, not made to conform with some other superficially similar situation in another country. • Oppose Per WP:NATURAL. Parenthetical disambiguation is not preferred unless no alternatives exist.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 16:01, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as per above; the non-parenthetical is preferred. The New York (state) v. New York State debate is somewhat relevant here, but not quite so much as to suggest any specific outcome. The page on es.wiki is called es:Estado de México. power~enwiki (π, ν) 06:46, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. A problem I can see with the current title is that a nation state can also be referred to as a state. So "State of Mexico" could just as easily refer to the country of Mexico and is therefore ambiguous. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:31, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support – the current title is ambiguous. "State" and "nation" are used as synonyms. Only in certain federations (such as the United States) is "state" used to refer to a subdivision of a country. CookieMonster755 𝚨-𝛀 01:41, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Should this article have a flag inside the infobox? There is a discussion about it at WikiProject Mexico, where you can join and discuss it. (CC) Tbhotch 20:39, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ranking[edit]

The State of Mexico is not the most densely populated federal entity of the 32 United Mexican States. I guess it would be number 2 after Mexico City which has a density of 6,200/km2. This is because the territory of Ciudad de Mexico is about 20 times smaller, but it still has over half the population of Estado de Mexico. Please change the ranking to reflect this because as of now there are two pages both claiming to be number 1 in this regard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hjsy9a (talkcontribs) 07:29, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
