México (state) → State of Mexico - First of all it has an accent, and the English language has no accents, second of all, I don't know who named the article but the name is ambiguous, everyone knows it under the name of State of Mexico (Estado de México in Spanish), precisely so I wouldn't be confused with the name of the country, therefore the name of the article should be State of Mexico, in fact everything within the article (but the title) uses that name, thank you. Depends... If there is no obvious consensus, then I would allow 5 days to a week to see if a consensus develops. However, if the consensus seems to be clear, then a day or two might suffice. It depends on whether an admin considers the proposed move to be obvious commonsense and uncontroversial or debatable and possibly controversial. See WP:SNOW and Requested moves. I could do it now but I'll wait a day or two to see if anybody objects.

work done on the State of Mexico page[edit]

Students from the Advanced B English class at ITESM Campus Toluca class have extensively expanded this article, adding a lot of goo information. However, the article does need editing work (spelling, grammar, paragraph formation etc). One citation is missing. I will give them a day to work on this, however, any suggestions for improvement are welcome.Thelmadatter 14:45, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have done some initial cleanup. Is it your intent that other Wikipedians simply cleanup any issues or do you prefer that they be pointed out for your students to fix themselves? The latter approach is a lot more work than just fixing the problems as they are identified. Perhaps you could suggest to your students that they go back and review the article a few days to a week after they make their edits. This could be frustrating if their edits are completely deleted. If that happens, have them ask a mentor to look into why that happened.
I have deleted only one piece of text, the one that asserted "Mexicas=Aztecas" which is not technically true although many people may think that. The Mexica were only the ruling group in the Aztec empire. There were many other groups subjugated by the Mexica to form the Aztec empire. See the Mexica and Aztec articles for more details. Also see the Aztec codices article for more information about the codices. In particular, see my comment on Talk:Aztec codices asking for help correlating the codices mentioned in this article with those mentioned in that article.

I dont expect you all to grade this like a teacher would, just some general comments on formatting and organization, readability and/or understandability would be nice so that students can see what the norms are and how they are applied. I will have groups go over sections that they did not create for the more minute editing (grammar spelling etc). I would have put my comments on a team's Talk Page but it seems that multiple teams are working on this article and so it was unclear where the comments should go.

mexico state vs state of mexico[edit]

Why is this under Mexico State and not State of Mexico? The move discussion above was to move it to State of Mexico wasn't it? I think Mexico State sounds awful, and a google search shows that State of Mexico is much more common. -Solid Reign (talk) 05:21, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Detail:
the name of the entire federation is not "Mexico", it is "United Mexican States", and the mexican constitution says it, and it also says in its 43° article, that officialy, the name of the state is "Mexico". Remembering a little, first, the Aztecs found Tenochtitlan, then they created a city-state, next an empire (Mexica) that was conformed by the actual states of Oaxaca, Michoacan, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla, Guerrero, Veracruz, Mexico, Federal District and parts of Queretaro, Guanajuato, Chiapas, and the region of Soconusco; they were conquered and reorganized as the Kigdom of Mexico, with the Borbonic Reforms it turned into the General Intendence of Arms and Provinces of Mexico, federalism came and it turned an state (without the territories of the actual states of Oaxaca, Michoacan, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Chiapas, Veracruz and the Federal District), finally, it was divided into Morelos, Hidalgo and Guerrero. State of Mexico → State of México — Consensus at the last discussion was not to change the disambiguation, but I think it's clear from the most recent discussion above that the diacritic should be included. We keep running into this question again and again. I agree that the state's name is problematic for foreigners, but that is simply because it shares its name with the country in general. The article for the country is named Mexico as it should because that is the English name for it. There really is no "English name" for this state, as most people do not know it exists. Hell, I didnt before I went to work in Toluca. In Mexico, the state's official name is simply "México," but to distinguish it from the name of the country (and hell, Mexico City (which is often just called "México" too)), the term "Estado de México" is used. This translates to "State of Mexico" or "Mexico State." I sincerely doubt that putting an accent mark on "Mexico" is going to clarify anything to anybody. Although a redirect from "Estado de México" might be helpful. In Spanish Wikipedia, the article is named es:Estado de México. I understand "state" can be interpreted as "country" but not in a place name.Thelmadatter (talk) 21:19, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is already a redirect from Estado de México (as there should be), as well as Estado de Mexico. It's going to be difficult to find evidence of common usage one way or the other for this name. Subjectively, I prefer the fully English "State of Mexico" over the mixed "State of México", but if there is evidence that the latter is the more common usage in English, we should go with it. The #Requested move January 2011 was not closed properly, as pointed out at User_talk:Born2cycle#M.C3.A9xico_.28state.29. Majority agreed to use "Me(é)xico (Mexican state)".   • Strong oppose This again??????? We've had this discussion various times. There was no majority for "México (Mexican state)" in January or February. The official name of the state (as per the constitution is "México." That's not workable in English for obvious reasons. To distinguish the state from the country (and hell from Mexico City) it is called "Estado de México" (often shortened to EdoMex). Other Mexican states are not good examples. Even in Spanish, Edomex is signaled differently for disambiguation purposes. Use "Estado de México" or "State of Mexico" but dont mix English and Spanish. Accents tend to be used on words not considered part of the English language (which is why Mexico as the country name is not accented). Michoacán takes an accent because it is not known. but like Amakuru, I dont like the use of them either. Using "México" will not make anything clearer because most readers will see the country name. Using "Mexico/México (state)" is confussing and needless. Removing the word "million"[edit]

I am removing the word "million" from the infobox footnote on the state's GDP and from the item in the infobox to which it refers. Including that word must have been a mistake. "796,426,291 million pesos" equals 796,426,291,000,000 pesos, which is more than 796 trillion pesos. That is far too large a number for the GDP of one state and probably even more than the GDP for the whole world.--Jim10701 (talk) 23:36, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Change title of article/page[edit]

The title of this article/page ought to be "Mexico (state)", because in the English language it is often referred to as "Mexico State", as is the case with the U.S. state of New York, it is referred to as "New York State". This is consistent with, for example, Georgia (U.S. state), which is at that title (rather than merely at Georgia (state) due to the fact that sometimes "state" and "nation" are used as synonyms. State of Mexico → Mexico (Mexican state) – I previously suggested moving this article to Mexico (state), but it was not moved. I am suggesting Mexico (Mexican state) because on the previous move request, one of you suggested that title. Please let me know what you think of this title.   • Oppose. Things on Wikipedia are titled with their WP:COMMONNAME, not necessarily their official one. The reason this doesn't have to conform to the same naming standard as the three U.S. states that have disambiguated titles is that actual usage doesn't work the same way for them as it does for this. In normal usage, the US states of Georgia, New York and Washington are referred to just by their names alone whenever possible, and as "X State" (not "State of X") only when it's necessary to distinguish them from the city or foreign country that they happen to be name-twinned with — but because the state under discussion here shares its name with that of its own country, it can almost never be referred to as just Mexico alone, and the usual real-world usage for it in English is "State of Mexico" rather than "Mexico State". (I'm sure the latter probably also exists in some cases, although a Google search for it disappears behind usages like New Mexico State University and New Mexico State Guard and it's quite verifiably less common than "State of Mexico" is.) So real-world usage dictates how we should disambiguate this — and the indications are that it's already located at the usual real-world usage. We can't have blanket "one size fits all" rules that apply exactly the same way across the board, because one size doesn't fit all in reality — each situation has to be evaluated on its own merits, not made to conform with some other superficially similar situation in another country. Ranking[edit]

The State of Mexico is not the most densely populated federal entity of the 32 United Mexican States. I guess it would be number 2 after Mexico City which has a density of 6,200/km2. This is because the territory of Ciudad de Mexico is about 20 times smaller, but it still has over half the population of Estado de Mexico.
