Famous Alumni

Need a reference to any posted famous alumni, or at minimum, a sentance describing who they are. Railgun 17:33, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Are we sure that Willie Nelson is an alum of SFA?
  • Never heard that myself? Railgun 15:50, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Willie Nelson was made an honorary alumnus of the SFA chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity...but is he a SFA alum?
  • I dont think that he should be on there... he didnt go to SFA... some frat just wanted to make him a "member" to say that they have willie nelson on their rosters
  • Consensus then. He goes until someone produces evidence he actually graduated from SFA. Railgun 14:22, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Eric Hilton, heir to the Hilton chain, is not a Alum. I don't have time to look up the other additions by the Nacogdoches, but according to Conrad Hilton Eric would have been 45 when he lettered at SFA. http://www.sfalettermen.com/football_lettermen.htm#h Would someone mind checking the other additions made by Nacogdoches? Tanner65 23:11, 10 August 2006 (UTC) I'm pretty sure that SFASU alumnus Eric Hilton is Conrad Hilton's grandson. You or "Nacogdoches" should check with the Alumni office and not rely on Wikipedia as a source. When my students cite Wikipedia, the paper is returned. The other additions you question appear to be correct. Mosely is from Livingston and played football for SFA and the Redskins; banners on North Street herald achievements of Jennings and Maule. Aren't there some notable women graduates? Alumni are former students and not necessarily graduates. Willie Nelson did not graduate from SFA, but I don’t know if he ever attended SFA as a student. Who is James Jones? It's too common of a name to figure out exactly which one went to SFA. There should be a job title and company name next to his name instead of the generic "businessman". Also, I can't find any information about Zachari Schueneman on the internet and his wikipedia bio (which is proposed for deletion) doesn't even say the company he works for or which form of media he broadcasts on. What do all of you think about adding Tony Tompkins to the list? Sfajacks 17:24, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

My experience with U.S. universities has been that the term "alumni" is frequently limited to actual graduates, while "ex" is used for anyone who attended. (It came to my attention when someone from my alma mater committed a murder — no one you'd ever have heard of — and everyone made a point of distinguishing between exes and alumni, believe me.) The Streak

We always heard that one of the first incidents of "Streaking" in the 60s occured at SFASU as described by Paris Match magazine. I'm pretty sure the cover of that magazine was on display in the lobby of the library when I was a student there. Any students there now can confirm this? Railgun 16:30, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

  • when i was there i heard about no solid evidence i can think of... i.e.- newspapers etc. Edolive 21:15, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

my roomate for the fall of 2002 father witnessed it and later did it. i don't see what the big deal is about it from what friends parents have told me it was a common thing. i even did it my freshmen year but at night at 2 am monday morings a few times....not a big deal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gulielmi2002 (talkcontribs) 18:19, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

The article on Wikipedia about streaking lists two completely reliable primary sources for this incident, which was in the Spring of 1973, in its content, including the SFASU archives themselves. The Moody Blue (Talk) 22:42, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Traditions and Trivia

Who ever put that enrollment was at "record levels" in the trivia section, needs to do a little fact checking before they make any changes. Record high enrollment was in fall of 1990 with 12,815 students. Enrollment in fall of 2005 was 11,435.

Who put that SFA was in the top in party schools? this is not fact nor does it need to be on this page.... Rugbyfest is not a tradition it is an excuse for rugby players to drink... both of these items need to be removed. they paint the school is a negative light, edolive

Railgun, I posted about alumni not having to be graduates and the error in stating that enrollment was at record levels, but I am not the one who said they return papers citing wikipedia. I could not find in rankings of party schools in Texas that would support the claim of SFA as a top party school, and agree that it needs to be taken off. I also agree that rugbyfest is not a tradition at SFA.

Contributors, please sign your comments (4 tildes) for my sake. If you don't have a Wiki account, please create one. I agree, Rugy Fest and the top party school thing need to go. Fight Night would be more of a tradition than Rugby Fest. I also think alumni should have to have recedived a degree or honorary degree from the school. Also, the names of the residence hall chair-people will go. This is just self-glorification. I also don't recall APO having an exclusive lock on the bonfire when I was there. Someone needs to verfiy this. Railgun 17:27, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I think that traditions specific to a group on campus should go on a separate page for that group. If someone wants to make a page for the SFA Rugby team then they can list Rugby traditions on that page, but it does not belong on the main SFA page. Also, If someone wants to provide enough detail about RHA and Res Life stuff to list recent chairpersons of Parents Day, then they need to create a separate page for SFA RHA. APO has built the bonfires since the late 70's. Jeremiah Trotter entered the NFL after his junior year and Don Henley attended but did not graduate from SFA. They are both considered alumni and sould be on the list of famous alumni along with any other notable figures who attended SFA. Sfajacks 04:12, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes, at the very least I was thinking of creating a new section where all the Greek and student organizations could be listed (list themselves) and under which they could put their sponsored events. Railgun 15:23, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

why is rugbyfest still on the page? edolive

Since there seems to be a consenus, I removed rugbyfest. Sfajacks 21:31, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! edolive

Anyone have any more pictures of SFA to post? The pic of the sign out front of the school needs an update. edolive

I'm a photographer and have lots of photos from SFA. I've been meaning to go through them and find some good ones to post. Hopefully I'll get around to it soon. Sfajacks 03:45, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Wait a second, Rugbyfest is a tradition. It's a rugby tournament first and foremost which has been going on for 20 odd years. Just so happens that drinking goes along with rugby. Never went to rugbyfest during the day, didja? :-P Check it out at the intramural fields on November 11th, I think it is. tanner65

Which is exactly why a new section should be started for Greeks and Clubs that allows them to listed along with the events they sponsor. I don't think the traditions section should be polluted with every clubs annual events. That hardly constitutes a 'tradition'. Is the Turkey Trot a tradition? What about the Biology Honor Fraternities hay ride? Railgun 18:16, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

There's actually some pretty interesting trivia behind SFA's observatory - if anyone there now is taking astronomy or knows the astronomy professor. I remember something about the mirror in one of the telescopes coming from a decomissioned NASA telescope. The story was along the lines of NASA saying whoever got their first - gets it, and the profs from SFA did. It was also supposedly the first observatory in the world that was remotely controlled (using a Commodore 64) that they could control the telescope from 10 miles away back on campus. Where are the actual current students who can find out this stuff :-) Railgun 16:12, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

New President Search? Buy Out from Bigger University?

is there any new information about a new president or being apart of a system? Edolive

Any word on a new president? where did tito end up? edolive

Tito Guerrero ended up landing a job at Texas A&M University as Vice President & Associate Provost for Diversity [1]

  • good to know Edolive 21:14, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Any new news about the president search??? or Buy Out??? Edolive 19:52, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
      • Dr. Baker Patillo was confirmed as president in January 2007. [2] Sfa2000
        • if that is true... what is "interim" still by his name? should i remove it? Edolive 16:31, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Reasons for delisting

Hi all, I have delisted this article from the good article list because I don't believe it meets the good article criteria. There are a number of universities that are presently good articles (see the "Education > Educational institutions" section for these), so my suggestion would be to look at these articles for some guidance. Specific things to address include:

  • Try to remove lists from the article and replace with prose.
  • Add a history section.
  • Add inline citations.

Cedars 16:57, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Is it really practical to try to turn most of these long lists into prose? I think they're awkward as lists, but they convey the information. Also, without any description of what the points of interest actually /are/, I think that list has no place in that article. Anyone object to deleting it? Kagechikara 06:40, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

    • There has to be a way to make the list into prose... Lets hold off on deleting it and try to figure something out how does that sound? Edolive 18:57, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
      • All of the point of interest have external links, it's not like there is a list with no way of finding more information about the points of interest. Sfajacks 02:11, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Bill Owens

Bobcat 10k,
Bill Owens received his Bachelor's degree from SFA and his Master's from UT. Look at the 8th paragraph[3]. Sfajacks 19:36, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Removing Notable Alumni

Why are people removing notable alumni from the list? I can't imagine that it is because they don't think people like Don Henley and Will Jennings are notable. If it is because they question that they are actually alumni, I am including some references. We need to start a references section.Sfajacks 23:23, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism

I kind of hope that "Samhoustonrules" is another sockpuppet of Lawdechris. I hate to think that there is more than one Sam Houston person that is pathetic enough to vandalize this page so many times. I checked SHSU's page history to make sure there is not some kind of vandalism war going on between us that I didn't know about, but the vandalism on this page is completely unprovoked. And to any SFA person who might be getting frustrated enough to retaliate, please don't stoop to their/his level. Sfajacks 01:03, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Links

Although I don't see how those links violates the WP:EL, I didn't really like that some of those things in two different lists. I don't think that the housing and RHA links were necessary because those are easily found going through the SFA website. I would like to see more discussion before any content (other than vandalism) is removed. Sfajacks 01:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Established 1923?

Was SFA founded in 1923 or 1921? It's 1921 according to www.case.org/guide/stephen_f_austin.html.

  • SFA was founded by the State Legislature in 1921 but classes were not held until 1923 Sfa2000 05:39, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:StephenFAustin.gif

Image:StephenFAustin.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. what is the graduation erate —Preceding unsigned comment added by 169.204.230.186 (talk) 21:33, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Over 9000!!!

Lol. Someone put "Over (??? 9000)" for number of staff. Not sure if this is correct or not, don't have info. Someone who knows haw to find the info might want to fix it.

900 is closer. SFA has about 14,000 students (including grad, doc and distance learning students), and a good general rule of thumb for major universities, which SFA is, is about 100 staff and faculty per 1,000 students. I think the 900 figure is, at any rate, a good guess. The Moody Blue (Talk) 22:46, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Moving info on The East Texas Historical Association

The East Texas Historical Association being based at SFA is not central to the article, and does not belong in the summary. I have moved it to "Points of interest and notable campus buildings." On another note we might want to make a new page for Organizations that are at SFA both student groups and those like East Texas Historical Association.Preston A.
