Deleted sections[edit]

In a continued effort to improve the article, I have moved two sections here that I think are significantly less important that the other material in the article. They appear to be properly sourced, and I am moving them here rather than deleting them outright in case someone disagrees with me.

Emergency Response[edit]

In September 2008, Governor Beshear declared a state of emergency as the remnants of Hurricane Ike passed over Kentucky, knocking out power to thousands.[1] Beshear issued the emergency call after reports of price gouging began to emerge in the Louisville area. By declaring an emergency, Beshear was able to activate a Kentucky law against price gouging during times of crisis.[2] Almost a week after the storm, 120,000 Kentuckians were still without power, and Governor Beshear asked President George W. Bush for a federal disaster declaration, qualifying state government for partial reimbursement of expenses. Beshear at the time stated that the storm was "the worst of its kind on record in Kentucky." [3]

On January 27, 2009, Governor Beshear declared an emergency as a result of the 2009 ice storm that had catastrophic impact on the Commonwealth.[4] Within 24 hours of the storm hitting Kentucky, 104,000 Kentuckians were without power.[5] Beshear referred to the severe weather event as the "biggest disaster this state has seen in modern times" and announced the activation of "virtually the entire Kentucky National Guard."[6]. By January 29, 150,000 Kentuckians were without electricity or potable water. President Barack Obama approved Beshear's request for a federal disaster declaration. Response was complicated as the Kentucky National Guard distributed packaged, prepared meals to hungry residents. Many of the first meals delivered, prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, contained peanut butter and had to be recalled due to the salmonella scandal involving American peanut production at the time. Beshear allayed fears by stating that he ate some of the peanut butter and didn't become ill. Beshear discussed response to the ice storm at length in his 2009 State of the Commonwealth address. Beshear's staff stated in early February 2009 that the storm did more than $50 million worth of damage to the Commonwealth.[7]

Christmas Tree Controversy[edit]

According to the Associated Press, in late 2009 Gov. Beshear decided that the Christmas tree on the lawn of the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort should instead be officially designated a "holiday" tree.[8] Hearing this, the American Family Association alerted conservatives in the Bluegrass State, asking its e-mail list to call and e-mail Governor Beshear. Within days, phone calls and e-mails flooded the governor's office, and Beshear reversed his decision.[9] As a result, the governor issued a statement shortly thereafter saying the tree would again be referred to by the governor's office as a "Christmas" tree.

I'll review this article over the next few days. As it's a long one, about an active politician at that, I'm treading carefully, and will review this section by section.

Just noticed your note on Aaron's talk page. I can hold off doing the review for a little while and extend my normal hold deadline given the circumstances. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 13:36, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Appreciate it. Not sure what will constitute "normal" in terms of Wikipedia time after this major life event. (My daughter was born this afternoon!) I do plan to be off work for a while, so maybe I'll have time to respond to your comments next week sometime. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 03:33, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I'm usually strict on the one-week hold thing, but I'll just review it and you can just get to it when you get to it. Unless I find some major problem that requires a fail I'll just put it on hold indefintely. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 21:54, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The only issues I saw were more FA-type fixes than anything against the GA criteria, so I'm going to pass this article. Nice work. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 05:23, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Wizardman. What a great time for me to get a "clean slate" GA review. Now, if I can just get back to that John Y. Brown, Jr. review, I'll finally have my Kentucky Governors good topic! Acdixon (talk contribs count) 17:33, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

No issues. Wizardman Operation Big Bear

Early life[edit]

Early political career[edit]

  • Partially done, no issues yet. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:28, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • No issues. I do find it odd though (and I've probably said this to you before) that the governor and lieutenant governor ran separately. Sounds like something that would've been fazed out in the 19th century. The only issue that might arise at an FAC would be "The commission was hailed by some as the most substantial undertaking by a lieutenant governor to date, but was panned by others as a move by Beshear to better position himself for a run for governor in 1987." I know that some people are iffy about the "by some" type sentences in articles, but personally I don't think it would be beneficial to just add names or organizations for the heck of it. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:05, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah, it is a little odd for them to run separately, but this was not changed in Kentucky until 1992. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 17:33, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Political interim[edit]

2007 gubernatorial campaign[edit]

  • "On December 18, 2007, Beshear announced that he would enter the 2007 gubernatorial race". I went and changed this to 2006; would seem kinda silly to enter a race after it was over.
  • No issues beyond that. However, "Late in the campaign, eight of Kentucky's leading newspapers endorsed Beshear." You could also note how many endorsed Fletcher, though I would not require it. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:16, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Governorship[edit]

  • "As of August 2010, the case was still in adjudication." double-check to make sure there's no further updates. Same with any other "as of" notes. No further issues. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 05:22, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2011 gubernatorial campaign[edit]

No issues, though check to see if there are any new updates now that the midterm elections are over. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:17, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Misc.[edit]

Images look fine. References look fine; not used to that formatting but there's nothing noticeably wrong with it. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:49, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Race?[edit]

Most bios like this say "German-Dutch heritage", "Irish Father", "French Grandmother", etc. Is his background unknown?

Just how does a multigenerational southern white family end up with an Arab/Persian/Indian name to begin with? I assumed he must be 2nd or 3rd generation Lebanese/Turkish/etc (a la Neil Sedaka or Jeanine Pirro), but I don't get that impression from the early life section. 209.172.25.251 (talk) 23:12, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't run across anything in my research, but I'll try to keep an eye out. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 00:14, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is it POSSIBLE that "Beshear" is an old Irish/Scots name and all the "Bashir"s and "Bashar"s in the Middle East and beyond picked it up FROM British rule? 209.172.25.251 (talk) 09:01, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Frankly, I've never heard of anyone caucasian having these names before.
(side note: I've never seen eyes that BLUE before! I'd vote "Nordic" after seeing that pic....) 209.172.25.251 (talk) 09:03, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I live near where Beshear was born, and while I don't hear "Beshear" all that often, variants like Brasher and Brashear are reasonably common. We don't have any kind of significant Arab population in this area that I know of. Name origins (or people origins, for that matter) aren't something I'm terribly familiar with, but in studying the lives of some of the state's more important early politicians, the Scots-Irish had a very heavy presence in early Kentucky. Out of date[edit]

There is nothing on this article that covers events after 2011. This article should be updated to reflect events after 2011. - 1990'sguy (talk) 01:18, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for making us aware of this. I just added the "update section" tag to the top of the Governorship section. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 17:47, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

State trooper killed[edit]

You need to have a back bone| To say that officers have been killed because of community officer relations is insulting. This was a hate crime| Blacks killing white police officers doing there job over and over. Where is the President now. He has thrown every white cop under the bus before he even hears what happened. Black or white - if you break the law things happen and if you get in the face of police officers and won't follow instructions you are going down in cuffs or worse, end of story. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.243.121.103 (talk) 20:21, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
