Just a little more Stove Top trivia. I was a young package designer woking for General Foods in 1972. We were given the assignment to work on a new stuffing which didn't have to be cooked in the oven. At the time there wasn't any name and we were asked to think about names that suggested cooking on the stove (there were no microwaves at the time). I came up with the most obvious answer- "Stove Top" stuffing. Little did I know it would become such a hit and a generic in it's category. Ralph Miolla

Invention and patent Dubious[edit]

I have found a possible discrepancy in this article under the INVENTION AND PATENT heading. It currently reads:

Bill Lovas, a food scientist with Kraft, invented this product while working on the team that was creating a ready made stuffing to sell for Kraft.

There is no citation listed. The article earlier states:

Stove Top is a brand name and type of bread based stuffing that was introduced by General Foods in 1972 (they merged with Kraft in 1990 to form Kraft General Foods)

Thus the inventor would not have been a Kraft food scientist due to the fact that Kraft and General Foods did not merge until 18 years after the product's invention.

I would like to offer a corrective suggestion and appropriate citation information:

In 1975, General Foods was awarded United States Patent No. 3,870,803 for the product, generically called Instant Stuffing Mix. Ms.(Ruth M.) Siems is listed first among the inventors, followed by Anthony C. Capossela Jr., John F. Halligan and C. Robert Wyss.

Please note that Mr. Lovas' name does not appear on the patent for the product. I would also like to point out that the current text directly contradicts the current Wikipedia article on Ruth Siems.

Bill Lovas was my dad. He invented it. Ruth was the "cook" (the era afterall) and the others were the senior scientists. My dad was the new guy, and junior scientist. He modeled it after his mother's recipe. Yes, it wasn't Kraft Foods at the time, he worked for General Foods and a group that would be bought by Kraft later. 156.99.75.2 (talk) 23:46, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
