Need reliable sources for these facts[edit]

I was just doing a bit of research on the origin of this song and found what seems to me is probably accurate information not included in the article, but it comes from sources that I don't think pass the test for reliability. The information they provide is this:

The song was originally written in German in 1965.
The music was written by Heinz Meier (= Henry Mayer) and the German lyric by Hans Bradtke.
It was first recorded in 1965 by Grethe Ingmann (which you can hear here: [1] - starting 3 minutes in).
Also in 1965 the Howard Roberts Quartet recorded an instrumental version of the song on their album Goodies.
Peggy March recorded the song in German for her 1966 album Laß mir meine Träume.

It would be great if someone could track down sources reliable enough to properly cite this information so it could be included in the article. It would also be worth finding out how much the English lyric is a translation of the German and how much is original. Obviously, the title is a translation, and even with my non-existant German it sounds like the opening line (at least) could be a translation of the German. 99.192.61.148 (talk) 18:40, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

German lyrics[edit]

The German lyrics are different from the English in two ways.

First, their meaning is somewhat different. A rough translation is:

The summer wind played with my hair; I stood by the sea with a lonely heart, then you came and showed me how beautiful the stars are, and sang to or of the summer wind.

The summer wind took my cares far away. My heart beat with every kiss and every word. You said that now our life was first beginning, and sang to or of the summer wind.

The summer wind took you far from here, and loneliness returned to me. I ask my self why my luck or happiness melted away so quickly, and cried to the summer wind.

Second, as you'll notice, they don't have the internal rhymes that Mercer put in: wind/in, there/hair, long/song, sand/and, etc.

"Second Chorus"[edit]

This article quotes Will Friedwald, one of the most unreliable writers on American Popular Song, to say that Sinatra's version removed the "second chorus." This is totally incorrect--what was removed was the fourth chorus. The chorus is intact on several other versions, including Perry Como's, but it is also dropped from various other versions, such as that of Wayne Newton. Is there a way to correct this error, and make a note that Friedwald's book is (as usual) in error, without another (correct) published quotation to use? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.231.42.28 (talk) 19:33, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
