23,000 capacity?[edit]

Summerfest's website claims the capacity is only 23,000. Even if you multiply this for the 11 day period the fest lasts for, this is still pretty small in comparison to many other festivals. Also, the area is only 75 acres, making it tiny in comparison to giant such as Glastonbury and incapable of containing a million people, even over an 11 day period. Updated latest stage on Summerfest grounds[edit]

The newest stage on the Summerfest grounds is the "Harley-Davidson Roadhouse" which opened for the season of 2008.

Need clarification of festival location[edit]

This and the associated festival pages should be corrected at some point to draw a distinction between the location, Henry Meier Festival Park, and each festival held there. For instance... Festa Italiana is not held on the Summerfest grounds.

I live in Eau Claire, and was to Summerfest once for about 3 hours, so I'm suffering nearly the same deficiency of knowledge as probably 99.973% of wikireaders when it comes to this. Are you volunteering (please? :-D) to take up the work required to expand my/our knowledge?  :-) We'd all be a lot better informed if you'd take this upon yourself, and hmmm, I think I could be pretty easily persuaded to award you a barnstar if you can let me know WHAT GOES ON DOWN THERE IN MILWAUKEE ANYWAYS!? ;-P Tomer TALK 10:27, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

Henry Maier Festival Grounds page created, festival pages redirected to that page. BTW, it is confusing, as I have seen Summerfest Grounds, HMF Park, and HMF Grounds used interchangably, not restricted to Summerfest the festival. -slowpokeiv 16:39, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Me too. I actually have seen "Summerfest Grounds" used more lately rather than Henry Meier Festival Grounds that I wondered if they had renamed the park. As for Festa Italiana, their website even says (in the box at far right): "Place: Summerfest Grounds on Milwaukee's Lakefront." HollyAm 23:23, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in any case, I will get the final answer in 7 days. I'll be going to Milwaukee Irish Fest, and I'll take a few photos of the main mid-gate to add, which if memory serves me, has the famous smiley, and the full name. At the main gate you will find in the metalwork spanning the top "Henry Maier Festival Park", and below that an electronic matrix sign which cycles and displays the Summerfest logo year-round. I just happened to drive past yesterday. While it is the premier fest for the park, the signage is no different than that of a company leasing a building... err, park. --24.211.0.91 04:22, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. I was trying to be fun. Sometimes the joke ceases to be funny outside my own mind. I was basically saying (without wanting to sound insulting) "could that picture possibly have been taken from any further away?" It was ill-considered. I should instead have simply asked if someone couldn't possibly get a closer image. This one relies too heavily on knowledge of what's going on in the image, as well as on a detailed caption. We could massively expand the article, and then there'd be room for at least 5 pictures! :^) I guess I should put my money where my mouth is and work on the article myself. I think the pic gives a good view of the Milwaukee skyline along the Summerfest grounds. Although I am surprised that there aren't too many people in the pictures; whenever I went to Summerfest, it was packed to the hilt with drunken, screaming people covered in tattoos. This picture is pretty old. I am going probably going to go to Summerfest on Friday, July 7th, 2006. I will try and get a better picture. Probably the Mountain Dew stage, or maybe the Marcus Amplitheatre. I knew I should have brought a camera, putting in a picture of Three Days Grace would be sweet. Actually, the same stage from before would be cool due to the interstate and buildings in the background. We'll see what I come up with, if I remmeber a damn camera.

Bands listing[edit]

Rather than having a list of whichever bands someone felt like listing (I was sorely tempted to add hometown favorites Violent Femmes, but I guess I'll keep the shout-out on this page), I thought I'd try to keep it to big names, and also try to show the variety of acts that appear there.

Also, I removed Asian Moon Festival from the last paragraph, because it is cancelled for 2006.

The location of the festival can be referred to as "the Summerfest grounds," but this is informal, and "grounds" isn't capitalized. That's what it used to be called, before they named the park, but I think it was unofficial at that time. Freekee 05:14, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's really pertinent. You could say that if a band played a side stage then they weren't very big at the time, but that's neither always true, nor relevant. I would like to limit it to bands that are representative of a genre, and are big. I think the 40 to 50 range is when the list gets too long. As the list has become cumbersome, I would suggest migrating it to List of bands that have played at Summerfest, simiar to List of Milwaukeeans
Summerfest is going on close to 40 years. Many, many bands have played Summerfest. Perhaps an idea would be to just list bands that appear at Summerfest frequently. For example, the BoDeans immediately come to mind. Failing that, I agree with Freekee to limit the list. I would think the point of a short list would be to represent the diversity that Summerfest offers, not be a history of everyone who ever appeared on stage. Age[edit]

Summerfest will be fourty next year(2007). At Summerfest 2006, there were many signs saying "Guess who's turning 40? Don't miss the party! Summerfest 2007." I am repsonsible for the changing of the foundation date on the wiki page due to these signs at Summerfest 2006. Actually, I reverted your change because, according to Summerfest's own website here, the first Summerfest was held in 1968. I saw the signs (and shirts) too about turning 40 next year, and I can only presume that they mean that, when counting 1968 as Summerfest #1, 2007 will be Summerfest #40. Fireworks[edit]

User:CrustyJoe made an edit that the opening day's "Big Bang" display was not part of Summerfest, but that the July 3 fireworks were. I believe it is the opposite. It is my understanding that the July 3 fireworks are sponsored by US Bank and in Veterans Park. The Big Bang fireworks, in contrast, are mentioned on Summerfest's website here. Further evidence is that bands headlining the grounds stages do not start until later than normal to allow for the opening day fireworks. HollyAm 02:59, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pointless list of acts that supposedly played at Summerfest[edit]

If someone wants to keep the list, get some citations and make a List of Summerfest acts or something similar. The list is almost 4kb and I really see no point in having the list in the article. --Dual Freq 22:10, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Incorrect Internal Link[edit]

The internal link for Indian Summer is for India, but the "Indian Summer Festival" in early September each year on the same festival grounds is a kind of large urban powwow for Native Americans. See www.indiansummer.org. The disambiguation page shows there is currently no Wikipedia article for this annual Native American festival in Milwaukee. Dates[edit]

The article says "... always including the 4th of July holiday," which has been true up until now (2011). For some reason, it's not open on the Fourth this year. How should the page best be edited to reflect this? Just saying "... always included the 4th of July holiday until the year 2011" is possible, but it seems kind of klunky. I changed it to say "...usually including the 4th of July holiday". If someone wants to specifically mention not including the 4th in 2011, it should be after the lead paragraph, and hopefully list the reason with a source. CuriousEric 14:45, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Post-1984 Directorship[edit]

Just removed this line, as the source cited looked dead and the statement seemed a tad strong. No personal opinion or knowledge of the matter, but we might want to include events below in a different way or simply add more about who managed Summerfest through now?

Through her fundraising and organizing, she became a local gad fly who abused her power and made her face as much a recognizable part of Summerfest as the smiley face logo) until she was fired by the board in September 2003.[1]

Another Summerfest Music Festival[edit]

At the top of this article it should be said and linked (if existing article exists) that there is another Sharefest Music Festival called, "Summerfest" held in the summer of 1985 in Enumclaw WA. Orem, Utah Summerfest[edit]
