Allegations of death threats[edit]

There should be a section on what punted Calman's profile into public consciousness and political controversy.

In May 2013 after a TV appearance on comedy panel show Have I Got News For You, print news and TV current affairs in Scotland was alight with controversy over Susan Calman having received death threats after her HIGNFY appearance, for jokes concerning Scotland and Scottish politics. This brought the comedian to the public eye beyond her fan base for the first time.

There was widespread condemnation of Calman's critics for online abuse, notably on the BBC's Newsnight TV current affairs flagship show, in the "serious" press, on radio news& phone-ins and online in her own Twitter conversations. The abuse was attributed to "cybernats" (a pejorative term. coined by unionist Lord Foulkes, for internet users who support Scottish independence from the UK).

Calman's blog referred to "death threats (real or otherwise)" and to reports of "horrific" criticism which, she said, she chose not to read.

Asked on Twitter to point to examples of this abuse, Calman replied angrily, refusing to clarify where it might be found. She turned down the opportunity to appear on Newsnight to clarify. Her interview in the Scotsman Newspaper, although headlined "Susan Calman: Death Threats for Independence Satire" made no direct claim of any death threat.

No evidence of death threats concerning Calman has been unearthed.

The blogger WingsOverScotland reported that the Scottish police had had no request to investigate a threat. 22:03, 8 May 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.144.179.56 (talk)

Do you have any cites about any of the above? I think it's possible to find the Scotsman interview, but what of your claims about what hasn't been unearthed? If this is all your personal investigations (or some blog's) then it is not suitable for inclusion.
And the fact she was a guest on a national radio programme suggests she was known beyond her fanbase already. Do you cites that say differently? --Escape Orbit (Talk) 23:58, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not every trivial Twitter dispute deserves mention on Wikipedia. The suggestion of death threats makes this one more significant though, and so with proper sources, the above material might be worth including; but in any case, it would have to be written neutrally. What's suggested above is not remotely neutral. Robofish (talk) 14:44, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality[edit]

I'm writing this as a reference to all editors who edit this article to change the nationality. A few points;

  • This article is not Calman's passport.
  • It is also not interested in definitions of what a nation is/isn't.
  • Its content follows the generally agreed precedences outlined in WP:UKNATIONALS.

WP:UKNATIONALS explains;

  • UK Nationalities are a complicated matter full of pitfalls and disagreements
  • Wikipedia therefore has no one-size-fits all rule that it attempts to enforce
  • All UK nationalities are therefore valid on Wikipedia.
  • So you don't change an article's nationality without good reason
  • "Passports", "citizenship" and "nation states" are not good reasons because they attempt to apply a one-size-fits-all rule
  • "I prefer it like this" is definitely not a good reason.
  • The article subject stating a preference is a good reason.

Hope this clarifies things. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 20:47, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In December 2017, Calman began presenting a new comedy series on BBC Radio Four called "Keep Calman Carry on". This could go in the article. Vorbee (talk) 18:35, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
