Please Fix[edit]

This page is full of mis-information. That little tent looking arrangement in the picture is NOT a swag (regardless of how the retailer marketed it). Traditionally a swag was indeed just piece of tarp. The "swag" is how it is used - to wrap it around the user to make a waterproof bed, then roll it up and secure it with a strap to carry it. Folding the tarp correctly for waterproofing, insulation and ventilation is important. Suggesting that a swag requires by definition recent technology such as foam mattress is simply laughable. There are modern commercial swags that are manufactured with zippers and built in foam etc., which are great, but in no way archetypal.

Tarp[edit]

Whats the difference between this and a Tarp / Hootch ( Tarpaulin ) ?!? Question from a non-australian reader.

A tarp is just a waterproof sheet. A swag is a full bedroll - a mattress with a waterproof (usually canvas) casing that you get inside. Or not - if it's a nice night you can just sleep on top. Your basic swag you just undo the straps, give it a kick to make it unroll and voila - waterproof, comfy(ish) bed. More fancy ones are more like a min-tent with a mattress inside that you need to spend time putting up. If you do a google image search for "swag roll" you'll get a lot of examples (just searching for "swag" gives you lots of images related to the American slang use of the word). I believe that the colloquial usage of the term swag doesn't outweigh any of the other dozen disambiguations for the term (see Swag (disambiguation)). I propose Swag redirect to Swag (disambiguation) and this article be moved to Swag (shelter) or something more appropriate. etymology..?[edit]

There is no mention of the origin of this term. However, it sounds like it may be related to Swag_(motif), especially as the decorative swag is often secured with ribbons : the ironic resemblance to a traditional bush swag is striking ..? Feroshki (talk) 00:05, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
