Weasel words

I've added the weasel words box to the top of this article because of the following sentences (emphasis added):

  • "In 2005 the controversial closures led to the suspension of philosophy lecturer Colwyn Williamson on charges of computer hacking, which many students saw as an attempt to silence him as a whistleblower." - Which students? When? Where?
  • "The survey was roundly criticised by some staff and students, as it was carried out by the Student Panel. Students claimed that the sample was self-selected and therefore unscientific." - Who criticised the survey? Who made these claims? Where is the proof?

Sources should be provided to prove the veracity of these statements (e.g. references to newspapers, reports, articles in the Waterfront, etc.). --Marknew 09:04, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello Mark,

Unfortunately, the Waterfront site appears to be broken at the moment, but it has carried many articles on the issue of Williamson and his suspension. If I can get at those articles I will post them as sources.

As far as the student panel is concerned, I admit that I'm not able to provide a written source regarding its disparagment. I'm a student at Swansea and I posted the dissatisfaction with the survey because I have heard it.

Yes, that's not a verifiable source. However, it is a fact that the sample is self-selected and I feel this should be pointed out in the article. Should I change it to "the survey may not be scientific as it is self-selected"? Or what?

from the panel's website: The Student Panel now numbers over 20,000 members. Our core aims are to keep our panellists motivated and ensure they represent the UK student body. We verify all members’ academic email addresses (issued by universities and ending ‘ac.uk’.) This helps exclude 'web trawlers' and ‘professional’ on-line respondents. Panellists are recruited solely to take part in our service so have no worries about marketing scams or spam. We use the latest panel-management systems to ensure the seamless integration of survey data with sample selection to make participation easy, secure and non repetitive...

The only criterion that the Panel uses is that you have a British uni email address. Students are given amazon vouchers in exchange for participating. This is self selection.

University ratings

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. University name

Since the institution hasn't formally changed its name from the University of Wales, Swansea to Swansea University, should the page not be named for the former, instead of the latter? This is especially pertinent when one considers the institution's ties to the University of Wales and how unlikely it is that it ever will officially be called Swansea University, regardless how the institution attempts to style itself. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Benbristol (talk • contribs) 12:24, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Virtually every other UK HEI article is at the "brand name" used by the institution itself rather than the legal name in statutes. "Official" is a very confusing term to use in this context - do you mean what it officially calls itself or is officially called? Timrollpickering 19:01, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to sign off on my last message! Whilst I agree that the articles generally conform to the style desired by the individual institution, I think this is a different circumstance. It is one thing to call it Durham University (styled version) as opposed to the University of Durham (official), but Swansea University and University of Wales, Swansea are completely different. It is actually quite misleading (which is, of course, the point) and suggests that Swansea, like Cardiff University, is merely lightly affiliated with the University of Wales. As of today the university is officially styled 'Swansea University' along with Bangor and Aberystwyth Universities respectfully. However, the university still awards UoW degrees, further the UoW has changed to a 'confederal, non-membership' [1] university where it now just awards degrees. AlexD 12:25, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Motto

The motto is right: Gweddw crefft heb ei dawn. But I'm suspicious about the translation. dawn isn't culture. Talent? Ability? Telsa (talk) 08:51, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

It's the translation they're using. [1] A lot of universities have mottos that are lifted from Latin poems and the like and given a liberal translation. Timrollpickering 17:59, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

"The university campus is the closest university in the UK to a beach"

I would suspect (but haven't measured other than inaccurately on Google Earth, hence I have not edited the article) that the Old College buildings at Aberystwyth University may be a little closer than Swansea University (buildings at least) to the beach. Perhaps a fair edit would be "The university's campus is the closest university main campus in the UK to a beach" Any thoughts ...sorry it is so pedantic --Afgyork1 14:52, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Or perhaps we should remove it totally, because I do believe the University at Bangor has a campus that is on the coast, complete with a ship dock! Found a source of this beach claim "Our parkland campus has a spectacular seafront location and can boast the fact that we are the closest University to the beach in the world" [2]. Don't agree with it hence Aberystwyth comment above and in light of the Bangor coastal claim (has it got a beach though?) - should it be deleted or are Swansea correct? --Afgyork1 16:52, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

The logo displayed is incorrect. I know because I'm a student at Swansea. The new logo was introduced with the split from UoW, and it's a blue-and-white stylised version of the current one. I don't have a copy of it, and it's not on the Uni webpage (it's copyrighted even if it was). But just so you know cannywizard (talk) 13:36, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Ordering of Topics

Shouldn't the topics be arranged in level of importance to not only readers but to the university itself. I've just finished writing up the start of an article for J. Gwyn Griffiths, a lecturer of Classics and Egyptology of some note at the college and then I find the Egyptian studies leveled underneath the Sports Centre and Xtreme Radio. I love the Sports Centre (apart from the pavillion gym), but I'm sure if the birds were in the air, we would save the Egypt collection first. Anyone? FruitMonkey (talk) 00:12, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Notables?

The list of notable alumni is growing and growing. I'm not even sure that they are all really notable. Should it be moved to a certain category page? cannywizard (talk) 11:43, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Swansea college of art

The new article contains useful information, but is excessive. The existing section at the University page should be expanded first. Doing so will reveal yourself to other editors interested in the unviersity SmokeyJoe (talk) 02:00, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Removal of multiple issues template

@Jason.nlw: At a quick glance the article looks in much better shape than it was when the most recent tag was added. I've not gone through line-by-line but the tone looks better. There also looks to be a broader range of sources used. A good chunk are still part of the university website, but to some extent I feel that may be unavoidable for an article on a university if it is to be kept up-to-date (I've not tackled a university article myself, so that's mostly guesswork). I'm not going to remove the banners myself as I haven't read the article closely enough, but the good news is it doesn't necessarily need to be an admin. If someone believes that the issues have been adequately addressed, they can go ahead and remove the tags. If no one has taken a closer look by the start of next week I'll try to put aside some time to do so myself. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 17:26, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
