Removed POV and Cleanup tags

I have removed POV and Cleanup tags from the article. Future editors are requested to cite reasons here, on the discussion page, and attempt to fix the issues before tagging again. Nshuks7 (talk) 14:16, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Please avoid reprisals

I beg those who have been quoted in the news as seeking to "expose the people or agencies responsible for spreading these rumors" [1][2][3] to think carefully about how Wikipedia is supposed to work, and how a punitive approach could harm this article and the ability of Wikipedia in general to communicate the issues in Kashmir to the world. I cannot emphasize how bizarre it seems from my perspective, far away here in the U.S., that Jammu and Kashmir officials would be up late into the night because of some minor edits to an article as incomplete and poorly written as this one! The way Wikipedia is supposed to work is that people fix any misinformation that comes up, and more importantly, provide good sources to prove the correct information. Because anyone can edit Wikipedia articles, they shouldn't be taken on faith - articles are supposed to help people find written sources they can trust.

When I think of how many people live in Kashmir, and how important computer science is to the economies of both India and Pakistan, and how many people in the region speak English, I know that this article should have been written by people (unlike me) who actually know what "Hurriyat (G)" is. Yet in one hour I expanded it from 8,386 bytes to 12,251 bytes. This makes me fear that the people in the best position to improve this article may have stayed away out of fear of reprisals like the one above. Any punishment of the Wikipedia editors will only make it that much harder to make improvements to articles like this - and therefore, ironically, makes these article more vulnerable to haphazard reports. What I would recommend instead is:

  • Officials should hire someone to work with the media on issues like this. Government officials shouldn't stay up all night -- he should stay up all night. He should have official accounts on Twitter and Facebook, be in a position to find out the latest news about whether something like whether Geelani is alive from those in the best position to know, and have the writing skill and the contacts with proper authorities to issue formal statements of fact that are considered reliable and official enough that people on Wikipedia feel comfortable citing and linking to them as references.
  • Try to assure that people in Kashmir can update Wikipedia safely and without fear. Much of this is political - by defending and expanding principles of freedom of expression. Some is tactical, in how people register with Wikipedia to preserve some personal privacy. If enough people feel free to edit an article like this, it will be a much better article from beginning to end, written by people who are sensitive to the issues and understand the relative quality of the sources, and when false reports come up, people will quickly find and cite sources like the media liason I suggest above.

It is useless to try to stop rumors by cutting or penalizing communication - that only makes people willing to believe things based on scanty evidence, because "it must be censored". You can stop a rumor by pointing people at an authoritative refutation. For all these reasons, please, use this moment to improve your release of information to the press rather than to punish Wikipedia editors. Wnt (talk) 10:35, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

nationality

hiya. I took down the claimed story written in this link https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Syed_Ali_Shah_Geelani&diff=612451609&oldid=607750895 that his nationality is Kashmiri : correct me if I am wrong, Kashmiri is not a nationality Mosfetfaser (talk) 04:45, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Request Semi Protection

@Kautilya3:, I once said you to watch for this page, this page is often attacked by various IPs. Do you know how to request for semi-protection of the page? Can you request it?. Thank you.--Human3015 talk • 19:13, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Well, pages are semi-protected only if there is persistent vandalism by IPs. I don't see that happening to this page. In any case, to request semi-protection, there is an option in the Twinkle menu. You should turn on Twinkle first in your preferences. You might need to hunt for it :-) - Kautilya3 (talk) 19:54, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
@Kautilya3:, you can see edit war on this page with IPs, they are writing irrelevant things on irrelevant places. Thats why protection is needed.--Human3015 talk • 06:51, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 22 May 2015

Please change: Government of India is not issuing International passport to Geelani, so he can not travel outside India[5] To: Geelani has not declared himself as Indian in the Passport application, hence the Passport process is stalled, and he is unable to visit outside India. Reference: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/geelanis-incomplete-passport-application-cannot-be-processed-mea/

Reason: The line written right now gives a wrong impression that the Government has stalled the process, whereas it is other way round. 180.151.40.194 (talk) 10:09, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Not done: The page's protection level and/or your user rights have changed since this request was placed. You should now be able to edit the page yourself. If you still seem to be unable to, please reopen the request with further details. Kharkiv07 (T) 19:47, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Passport issue

kautilya3, sorry for reverting you, I have wrote passport issue to lead, if you can do some improvement it will be better. Also is it necessary to write it in lead? because several times in his long life he has been denied passport. Sometimes its given, sometimes denied. It has been continuos on-off situation regarding passport since 1989. It is routine thing in his life. You can see, he has done his graduation in Pakistan so he must having his passport already. Maybe it was rejected since 1989 when insurgency started in Kashmir. We have to do reserarch over it.--Human3015 Say Hey!! • 22:04, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Good. I made some changes and moved it down to the body. Since a passport has been granted, it doesn't need to be in the lead any more. - Kautilya3 (talk) 22:39, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Health Issues

Health issues are given too much importance and too lengthy. Nearly every old person has some health issues. Does they are necessary to mention in vast detail? Should we reduce it to few lines, maybe within 4-5 lines??? --Human3015 21:34, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

You're right. It should be no more than that. Quite frankly, it reads like a press release with daily updates: "In xx month, he had this...in yy month He suffered from this etc etc".Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:19, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Cleanup

This article reads like a press release. Main issues here are the usual: WP:NOTNEWS and WP:UNDUE. Everything is presented like daily updates instead of summarising. This is how WP:RECENTISM happens. I intend to trim all irrelevant content which is not relevant to this bio page. ‑Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:27, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Quotes section

I do not see the relevance of this section. When is there a need for having a WP:QUOTEFARM? We need to trim and append what's useful back to the article. I haven't finished reading the entire thing so can't do it. ‑Ugog Nizdast (talk) 13:50, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Criticism and Controversy

Totally object the way the content is presented here, with all minor stubby subsections overtly focusing on each piece. Again, calls for a trim and what's useful can be merged back to the article main sections. ‑Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:22, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Most powerful separatist

The material in this edit [4] is problematic.

  • "is emerging as the most powerful" suggests that it was true at the time of writing. What happened since then?
  • "most powerful" is a big judgement call, for which we don't rely on news reports. WP:NEWSORG are only reliable for news. Either he has emerged as the most powerful, in which case there should be multiple sources demonstrating it, or it was just one reporter's opinion which is not encyclopedic.
  • There is no further discussion of the claim in the body. In general the lead should summarise the body. Please don't add material to the lead without expanding on it in the body.

Personal Life

@User:Kautilya3, The personal life should not contain matter regarding the cousins and the grand children or his own children, about what they do in their life. I know he is accused that his children are living in comfort like condition and all that stuff but it can be covered under criticism section or some other related section of the article. And regarding his personal life.... his marriage, his ideology, his religion, his moments should be discussed like all the other Personal life sections of other articles are formulated. Owais Khursheed (Talk to me) 14:46, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Not sure why you pinged me for this. I didn't write that content, or any other content for that matter. I recall somebody raising why this content should be there at all and me explaining that it involved a criticism that his own family wasn't involved in his movement even though he was encouraging other youngsters to get involved. That is about all I know. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 15:06, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Personal Views in the page

There are thousands of people in power in India who almost everyday say lot of things about Mr Geelani. Then why is it is that A quote of Farooq Abdullah and Omer Abdullah has been written specifically. This sentence in my opinion has no importance in a Wikipedia information of a person. Moreover There in the "Personal Life" section whatever his children are doing, why has it been exaggerated here in a manner Indian Media says it everyday on TV. I think this should be reviewed and there should be a simple neutral information like he has a son and a daughter. I think his granson also have no role here to play. This all has been written by someone with a political move or mindset. I request wikipedia to review these things about this great personality.!!!mohsin (talk)

The Abdullahs were Chief Ministers of the state, and their views definitely count.
As for the children, if they are on India media "everyday" then obviously they are significant and relevant. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 17:11, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
